It's challenge time!

Comment with Just One Thing you've accomplished in the last 24 hours or so. It doesn't have to be a hard thing, or even a thing that you think is particularly awesome. Just a thing that you did.

Feel free to share more than one thing if you're feeling particularly accomplished! Extra credit: find someone in the comments and give them props for what they achieved!

Nothing is too big, too small, too strange or too cryptic. And in case you'd rather do this in private, anonymous comments are screened. I will only unscreen if you ask me to.

Go!

I think I am in love with the ghost of Andrea Gibson, and need to buy some of their books.

Andrea Gibson — “For Jenn”:

At 12 years old I started bleeding with the moon
and beating up boys who dreamed of becoming astronauts.
I fought with my knuckles white as stars,
and left bruises the shape of Salem.

I have watched The Vampire Lestat ep 1 & it was SO FREAKING GOOD, omg! I haven't been on Tumblr in the last few weeks, so I have no idea how the fandom responded, but I loved it. Looking forward to the new ep Sunday. (I need to make a new icon.)

books
Dark Olympus #10: Shattered Gods by Katee Robert. 2026. Kind of a disappointing end to the series, tbh.

The Fix: Saving America from the Corruption of a Mob-Style Government by Barbara McQuade. 2026. Rather long, but a thorough manifesto of things that need to be fixed.

1873: The Rothschilds, the First Great Depression, and the Making of the Modern World by Liaquat Ahamed. 2026. Not as accessible as I'd hoped. Also, far more Euro-focused than I'd hoped.

yarning
I have a commission for seven US flag catnip-silvervine balls and I am so blocked. There's no excuse for this, except ADHD and chronic pain. (Drat.) And today I got a commission from my cousin for another bunny. Gotta do the balls first. Sigh.

healthcrap
2 nights in a row now without taking (1mg) melatonin and still sleeping at a semi-reasonable hour. I had slightly more energy today. I'm ready to start feeling better any minute now?

wednesday reads and things

A lot shorter this time 😁

What I've recently finished reading:

In eyeball, Echo of Worlds by M. R. Carey, the second book of the Pandominion duology. I liked it and thought it was a good conclusion to the set-up of the first book. Also, I just realized it's basically Mass Effect 3 with the Synthesis ending, which I guess makes Paz Female Shepard...okay, not really. But the theme of organic intelligence and machine intelligence coming to terms with each other is a relevant theme in these days of "AI" growth.

In audio, Heaven's River by Dennis E. Taylor, the fourth Bobiverse book. I really loved this one, even though there was a bit of idiot-balling at the climax - why would you go through the town to get to the transit station, instead of going around it and coming in from the other side, when you know your opponents are looking for you?!?! But otherwise it was a well-assembled story, another "first contact with an alien race" narrative with some interesting twists. The bits and pieces of the separate storylines come together in some surprising ways at the end. And heh, it's the same theme in a way, machine intelligence and human intelligence and human-mapped-into-machine intelligence. I'm looking forward to the fifth book!

What I'm playing (again):

No, not replaying, I never do that 😁 but I had not started up Ghost of Tsushima since before my first bit of spring travel back in late March, so even though I was just about to do the final quest of the second part of the game, I noodled around with some random sidequests (freeing fishing villages from their evil Mongol overlords) for a few sessions, until I felt ready to free Castle Shimura. Now I'm out the other side and ready to complete the last act of the game!

case manager procured me a walker! travel significantly better even with having to sit sideways on the bus. now ordering a pool noodle to cut up and put on the handlebars as the grips are the least ergonomic thing ever to erg, i was having to stop every half a block and shake the circulation back into my hands (because i have to put quite a lot of my body weight onto the walker to keep the back pain from happening).

also seeing if i can potentially cannibalize more wheels from a friend's deceased relative's disused walker as the plastic caps on the back legs are gonna wear out fast with dragging over sidewalks everywhere, and i feel like the customary tennis balls will just get muddy

still super fatigued but i might not be out for the next 3-4 business days like usual

Today I backed the second in the Sir Sherlock series of Sherlock Holmes audios starring Tom Baker and John Leeson as Holmes and Watson. I greatly enjoyed the first audio. Note the series is CD release only, so you'll need a CD player. Tom Baker is on fine form.

The first CD can be picked up as an add on to the second Kickstarter. I expect in due course it will also be available to buy direct from AUK's web store.

Yesterday: I didn't even bother timing, because my knee was hurting so much I could only do a slower jog than even my distance pace. Maybe an 11.5 minute minute mile?

I will say that once I settled into a pace where my knee only spasmed once or twice a block, it did get better after a mile and I was able to switch to my 9.5 or 10 minute mile pace. I've noticed this: if I can keep the knee from hurting every single step, which is too much, it will often get better with running/walking.

Today I was afraid to push it, so I did my 1.3 mile run in 12:25, which is about a 9.5-minute mile, my usual (for my first mile--later it slows down to about 10). But at least my knee didn't do more than twinge a couple of times.

I'll probably be afraid to push it for another day or two, so don't expect an 8-minute mile until then.

I'm starting to think maybe I should just join the gym that's 2-3 blocks away. A stepmill and stationary bike might allow me to get my cardio up without aggravating my knee.

One thing worth mentioning is that my hamstring and glutes are definitely less bad than they have been. Definitely still a thing, but I'm on the right track. If I just didn't have to coddle my knee, I bet I could stretch my way into a much looser glute, even if not perfect.
