The Charmer

A question for P-type idealists

(*tap* *tap* Is this thing on?)

The other day, I was discussing the J-P axis with someone I know who is apparently either an INFP or an ENFP. I mentioned that it was possible for J-types to learn to be more comfortable with improvised, open-ended situations; I mentioned that bunch of my fellow INTJs studied improv sketch comedy, and subsequently became much more flexible and unanxious in dealing with unstructured situations in general. She immediately responded, "Oooh! Is there anything analogous you'd recommend for P-types to to work on their weak side?" I thought that was an awesome question, and don't have an answer.

P-types? Do you have any suggestions for her?

Different kinds of sentimentality...

An intuitive-feeler's sentimentality can be very difficult to explain to a sensate-feeler, and vice-versa. Take today, for instance, while I was discussing moving out with my ESFP mom.

Mom: So, what will you do with the piano?
Me: I'll leave it here and take the portable. (That piano won't fit in a $600-mo apartment!)
Mom: OHHH HOW SWEET ;~; MY BABY!!!!!1 YOU'RE LEAVING A PART OF YOURSELF HERE!!!!!!!11 (Talk about lack of Fe in immediately available functions; that was NOT what I was thinking AT ALL.)

And that confused the bejeezus out of me at first. I have trouble thinking of objects as extensions of myself. My art and my ideas are extensions of me, and that's what I'm sentimental about, not the vehicles used to transport or create that art. Add to this the fact that many material things don't even make that much sense to me nowadays, let alone have emotional value...

I sort of wish I were more... I suppose obviously sentimental, if only so my mom didn't treat me like a child whenever I show that very present side of myself to her (I usually don't, due to the way she tends to react to it.)

Huh...

I just joined, but the last post made me think a bit, about a person's "actual type" surfacing more and more as they get older.

I used to test as an INTP, up until I was about 16 or 17. I'm 21 now. In the past few years, I've been testing as an XNFX, and it looks like I'm ultimately settling into INFJ. I've read the descriptions for Rationals and Idealists, particularly those for Architect Rationals and Counselor Idealists and I've come to realize that Idealist suits me much more. Sure, I've been thirsty for knowledge, but when I think about why I've been so eager to learn, it's ultimately been because of my desire for self-knowledge, identity, and meaning. (i.e. I want to read because I want to relate to the material or find something of personal significance) Then there's the whole "smart, well read person = NT" stereotype.

At first, I thought it was really weird, that I could go from testing INTP to testing INFJ, since the types are so different, then I realized that these types DO a lot of the same things, but for completely different reasons, and it turned out INFJ's reasons resonated with me a whole lot more.

Anyone else here feel like late bloomers into their "true selves"?

Hi!

My names Jamie, I live in KY. Im an artist and full time cosmetology student. I first took the Meijers Briggs in a college corse and scored a XNXP..hahaha I already knew I was an introvert tho..soo..to this day, im not really sure what I am! NT or NF..I didnt really seem to "fit in" with the explanation of (Rationals)but i recently took a couple sorter tests online and came up as an INTP and INTJ!!! AHH.. you can imagine how confused I am.

I wonder..at the time I took the test i was 20 and now im 26..do you think its possible that the person that you are, your (type) hasnt completely emerged until your older?

history or philosophy...

A question here, since overall, this list has been less than hyperactive as of late...

How do people here relate to the two disciplines of History and Philosophy.. do you prefer one over the other, like both, like neither, etc???

I ask because I've tended to notice in my conversations with NTP's (especially INTP)'s that they tend to take a more philosophical approach towards questions--i.e. they tend to apply abstract generalized laws--whereas I tend to address questions (usually political/economic/moral issues) using historical kinds of evidence--i.e. more concrete examples situated in time from which I draw out patterns...

These observations have made me wonder if this is due to our different primary functions Ti vs Ni --and if so, then maybe I finally understand the difference between the two (since I haven't found any good descriptions of Ti that don't make it sound like Ni), but since I am only one INTJ.. I didn't want to generalize from just one data point..

Anyone else have such experiences or have any input on your preference for history/philosophy or historical/philosophical modes of argumentation?

Can intuition be trained?

An acquaintence of mine, who specialises in risk assessment and safety systems, has recently submitted a paper about the role intuition has in the field of safety assurance and management.

He writes: "Intuition is a process that closely cooperates with the analytic mind, and derives its information from past experiences in the quasi-conscious or subconscious mind."

He also goes on to claim that people can be trained to use their intuition - i.e., that intuition can be educated.

What do group members think about the potential for training people to use their intuitive abilities for specific purposes?  Has anyone any experience of becoming more intuitive through practice or training?
