A meme copied over from tumblr, where I was tagged in it:

last song I listened to: Bring Your Love - Madonna and Sabrina Carpenter

currently watching: so many things, oh my gosh. Kaiju Girl Caramelise (about an unpopular teenage girl who unfortunately turns into a giant monster when she has too many feelings and the classmates who find her dreamy), season 2 of You and I Are Polar Opposites, season 2 of Hana Kim, The Betrayal Knows My Name, Adachi and Shinamura, still yet more Prince of Tennis anime, Gintama, Chihayafuru, a Kylie Minogue doco on Netflix that skips most of the interesting parts of her career, I just finished every episode Netflix has of Dungeon Meshi...

currently reading: Unfortunately I also have bookmarks in a dozen books at the moment. The one right next to me on my desk is The Beauty's Blade by Feng Ren Zuo Shu, but I think I'm going to put it on hold again to finally finish The Makioka Sisters. And if I include all the manga I'm reading in the Jump app right now, I'm rereading Bleach (perpetually), rereading D Gray Man, slowly making my way through Kagurabachi, trying to finally finish Naruto after all these years... and that's not counting my digital backlog on Kindle and Kobo...

current obsession: writing, as ever

currently working on: (top secret exchange fic)

last google search: something related to my day job

favourite flowers: grevillea and golden wattle

The car salesman texts me this morning about if I'm coming for that White CR-V? I text back today. I should have called. He didn't see it. It's a mad house. There is no financial dude (he had an emergency) But rather than say that, can you come back tomorrow, Dana? we go thru everything and then wait.

And wait.

And wait. He finally comes over hey the financial guy is coming at 2 (I've been here 2 hours now) go out and have lunch and he'll be here. They had a food truck. Ate that. Dad waits terribly btw, absolutely PITA. He is not there at 2. Around 330 I finally go back to sign the paperwork. my Mr. Spock check was saying writing out a check for 10K is not logical. Yeah Spock neither is my monthly payments for 5 years. I feel a little ill.

Icons β€” Iced Tea Challenge

First row is [community profile] ic_animated Iced Tea challenge submissions (the Strikeforce: Morituri one I edited a little after the deadline, so it’s not identical to the submission post); second is icons I made at the same time and decided not to submit; third is alternate takes on some of the images made the day after.

(No, this time the challenge had nothing to do with circles. I just like circles. And it's a way to make the shape of Six Ages portraits work in an icon; they're rectangular and making squares of them is awkward.)

Wu Lei and Zootopia 2 for icons10in20

The current round at [community profile] icons10in20 is very summery! I finished it way early (and it's probably going to bite me in the ass for the other two challenges I still have to do which have earlier deadlines, but... it was so much fun! :D ) I watched Zootopia 2 this week, and so many of the themes were perfect for it that I ended up filling half the set with that alone.

Teasers:

10 icons, half Wu Lei and half Zootopia 2 )

I love comments, and if you have concrit for me, I'm open for that, too. All my icons are free to take and use, credit is appreciated. The list of makers whose textures and brushes I like to use is here in my resource post.

After starting the season a while ago and getting distacted, I watched all of the rest of Delicious in Dungeon over the weekend. It is a show that achieves the impossible - actually makes me want to cook! Luckily, I have resisted that temptation πŸ˜‚ But what a good show. My favourite character is Chilchuck, but it is a great balance of characters overall, and I like how it shifted into plottiness without losing the weird opportunistic monster cooking charm of the beginning. Looking forward to season 2 showing up in just under a year and a half from now.

In sadder news, RIP Sam Neill. Such a legend of Aus/NZ cinema, with such a warm and inviting screen presence.

My mother just snatched my mint from my hand and gave me her mint because mine was full and her mint was a quarter of a mint. (Red Bird needs way better quality control)

So let me do this week's writing nonsense with a question. I just read 2 books with a similar beginning. We know how it ends in the very beginning and the book is about how we get there. It worked in one case and not the other. I think the difference is in how it was done. In the first, a suspense story, we know 6 women go on vacation together and we know someone dies. this worked because we don't know who is dead and the story opens like a blossom one petal at a time until we see it all.

In the second book, a horror, we know the protagonist is in a mental hospital trying to determine if she is sane and can be hung for murder and the story is about how she got there. But for me there was no mystery to it (not to mention I've seen this basic horror plot a million times)

The first added tension. The second deflated it. The question is, have you tried this scenario? Did it work? Have you read it? Did it work? I'm sure like most things there's no one answer but I have found what works for me and what doesn't.

1) I find it interesting that in the era of the reboot, even websites and magazines now fall into that trend. Read more... )

2) At the same time, entertainment of all kinds has now infiltrated areas of society, business and governance in a way that has made it less distinct than before. If that gets people to pay attention to issues usually outside of their habits, then I see that as a good thing. But the way that everything has now become a form of entertainment, and seriousness or expertise of any kind is downplayed, seems a lot less of a plus.

3) Pillowfort has announced it will pursue non-profit status and as such is looking for people to step forward and become officers as well as various kinds of volunteers.

"I started Pillowfort ten years ago because I, like many others, was growing frustrated with how shareholder interference and corporate greed was degrading social media platforms. The need for a site like Pillowfort, that puts its users first, doesn’t take venture capital funding, and doesn’t subject its users to corporate censorship for the sake of ad revenue, has only grown since the site was launched nearly 10 years ago."

4) Speaking of Pillowfort, [personal profile] osteophage posted How Pillowfort Built a Comment Culture Worth Emulating which I find interesting to compare to how DW functions.

Just annoying AF.

And then last night Randolph ManTooth died. I am sad about that too. How do I NOT have a Johnny Gage icon? I loved Johnny. Randolph was one of my first fandom crushes. Johnny introduced me to character whump way too early in my development! I'll miss him and Bonnie Tyler died this week as well. I'm at the age where many of my childhood/teen loves are dying off.

Went to my brother's today to get a run down of the house quirks for when I'm house sitting.

Finally got to the first death in the slasher story and I finished all the reworking of my upper level A&P notes. I'm at my wits end. I can't cut much more but they are incapable of getting through it. These are the people aiming for grad school so my hands are tied to a certain extent.

I got Mr. Smith Goes to Washington out of the library to rewatch and grab screenshots for potential future icons. Now I am rewatching it obsessively, I don't even know. I do love Claude Rains and find his character the most interesting in the movie (though Jimmy Stewart and Jean Arthur are great, too!)

I'm also watching the second season of Daredevil Born Again for the first time (so don't spoil me). So far it's good but I wouldn't say I love it.

I'm reading David Sheff's Yoko Ono biography. A lot of it I already know, but a lot of it is new and the perspective is new.

I am also reading a Nero Wolfe mystery novel by Rex Stout, The Golden Spiders. I'm sure I've written about Nero Wolfe mystery books before - my father read them to my mother and sister and me when I was younger. Unfortunately he doesn't know what he did with his collection so I've had to get them from the library or buy them myself. I've just started The Golden Spiders but so far it is quite funny and engaging.

1) I got a bit of a break in between the time the workmen finished in our apartment and my partner came back from visiting his family. There were things to be done but I needed him here to do them. Read more... )

2) I had an especially poor night of sleep, getting maybe 3 hours yesterday. I ended up reading from 4 AM onwards until 6 when the grocery opened. It was my first grocery shop for two weeks so it was mostly fresh foods I had to restock.

One real plus is that I suspect the store had over-ordered watermelon for the 4th of July. I had to double take when I walked past the boxes and saw that they were marked at 99 cents. Not per pound, per watermelon! I hadn't planned to buy any since I had cherries I wanted to stock up on. But they were mostly bright red, so I just got one bag of dark ones. And two watermelons -- the ripest looking ones of the dozen or so left.

3) I also wanted my partner back to watch stuff on Prime before we cancel it. We saw the finale of Good Omens. Read more... )

At least as far as making doctor's appointments. I did manage to get a gastroenterologist appointment in 2 weeks here at home but there is no way to get the endoscopy before December. That's fine I won't be back until then anyhow. I was struggling to do this back home because I need a ride for the scopes. I'm WAY too rural for rideshares and all my friends work. I can't ask someone to lose a day of work for me. At least here family can cart me back from the hospital post procedure.

I was too upset yesterday to mention the visit with my favorite cousin my parents' age. She's been in assisted living for a couple years now, doing quite well. Had a cardiac event earlier this year (not a heart attack but scary enough apparently) Her friend ratted her out. She's not been out of her room for 7 weeks which is very unlike her. There is no real reason she can't at least walk down for dinner so it's apparently depression. It's very sad to see it.

1) Signal boosting Squidgeworld's call for feedback about how to handle guest comments on the site. "Commission spammers (at least this most recent one) have been copy & pasting entire stories into ChatGPT, and then having ChatGPT formulate a question about that fic. So while a guest comment may have sounded heart-felt, if the comment ended with a, "Why do you think..." or "What inspired you to..." question, then they didn't read your story and come up with a question; AI did. And the person literally copy & pasted a ChatGPT generated question into a comment - that's how we knew.

The easiest way to deal with these type of people is to disable guest comments completely."

2) Platforms sought no age proof for any of 50 test accounts declaring age 16, researchers said. "Some dummy accounts received advertisements for youth banking products, an indication the platform registered the person's age range, Hammond said. One account which signed up to Elon Musk's X claiming to be 16 was served pornographic content, he added. None of the platforms let users sign up if they declared they were under 16. But just one, Australia-based live-streaming platform Kick, refused to let users create an account without proof of age."

3) The decline in reading cuts across age groups, gender, and education levels. "From 1984 to 2025, the percentage of 13-year-olds who said they rarely or never read for fun rose from 8 to 29 percent. Every year older a child gets, the less they like to read. Robert Townsend, a program director at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, recently ran focus groups asking high-school students how they felt about reading for pleasure. He told me that most thought of it as an alien practice."

What I found most fascinating was this study's results: Read more... )

4) And it's not just text that video is displacing: End of an Era: Longtime Podcast Hosts Go Quiet as Video Dominates "Over the past year, various indicators of this transition have been piling up. Marc Maron ended his program after 16 years. Al Franken, an audio evangelist going back to the days of Air America in 2004, released his final episode last week, too. And many of the remaining audio-centric stars are attempting video in some fashion. (Witness Ira Glass, who is now recording promotional clips for This American Life.)"

Sparkles & Shimmies

Jul. 10th, 2026 06:04 pm
galadhir: a lovely tribal dancer in dark green choli and a red moroccan style belt with orange and yellow pom poms (tribal belly dancer)
[personal profile] galadhir

The lady who has run Shimmyfest for years, using it as a vehicle with which to raise money for Dementia UK and other charities, has decided that this year will be her last year.

This is a blow because there is nothing else in the area that combines a really modest ticket price, a wide guest-list, and two good workshops with professional teachers.

In fact there is nothing like it left in the area at all, except the smaller haflas that are put on by individual teachers for their particular classes.

So guess who decided that it couldn't be that hard to do, and volunteered to organize an Ely belly dance festival for midsummer next year, (along with a lovely lady who is much more experienced in this sort of thing.)

Couldn't be me, surely?

Anyway, we're in the process of finding a venue atm. We have small halls which will signal a very modest ambition, but will cost Β£120 all in, or a nice large hall with pub and cafe nearby, which is likely to come in at Β£370 but may indicate that we are attempting to go bigger and better.

That might revivify what seemed to be a slightly fading franchise. Or it might just cost us everything we might have raised in tickets.

I didn't expect the most important decision to come so early!

A gouache painting I made - it's a recreation of a photo I took of my sister while we were out on a walk. I'm not super happy with it but it's a submission for [community profile] seasons_of_fandom and due date is today so I didn't have much time to fix mistakes or redo it.
