Hey! Another DBB taker!
Jul. 20th, 2007 09:45 pmAnother person just answered the Dead Brown Bunny drabble challenge! :D So if you're not in line... or sitting in a cozy corner reading away...
Several of my f-list are new enough that they won't know what the heck this is, so clicky-clicky to read more of them. Heh.

Dinner
Jason tugged at his father's hand insistently. “They're in here! I hear them!”
“Okay, okay!” Clark smiled with a light-hearted chuckle as he let the little boy lead him out to the barn, seeking the litter of kittens they had only learned about upon their arrival at the farm that morning. He could already hear their mewling cries, and guessed from the pitch and intensity they must have been about five or six weeks old.
The pair entered the barn expectantly, and when Clark located the tiny balls of fluff behind a bale of hay in one corner, he pointed out the location to Jason. “There. Go slowly, you don't want to scare them or make the mama cat nervous.”
With a nod that bounced his unruly hair, Jason tiptoed up to the hay bale, leaning over it with wide eyes. “Cool...” he whispered as he looked down upon the litter.
Clark was behind him immediately, leaning with a knee on the hay to peer down at the kittens. “Oh, uh... I think we interrupted meal time,” he said as soon as he saw the source of Jason's awe. It looked to be a feeding frenzy, tiny paws, whiskers and teeth, torn bits of flesh, bone, tufts of brown fur and the remains of a long pair of rabbit's ears, all mixed together in a flurry of ferocious activity, infant feline cries, and contented purrs. An orange tabby kitten raised its little head to the onlookers, announcing their kill with a triumphant, shrieking meow, its ears perked up and muzzle, chest, and paws soaked in bright red blood.
A hand came to rest on Clark's shoulder, and he turned to see Lois looking on with disgust. “That's it, I'm converting to vegetarianism. Yuck.”
Clark smiled, “That's their dinner, Lois. The mama must have brought it to them. Have a little respect.”
“That's disgusting, Clark.”
“No way, Mom!” Jason protested. “It's the coolest thing, ever! Can we take the orange one home with us?” He turned back to staring excitedly at the blood covered kitten pile and their dinner.
Lois only rolled her eyes as Clark smirked triumphantly.

A/N: This is a true story - it happened to my hubby when he was a kid. :p Oh, and a posting to my LJ will follow.

Saavikam "77", between us two we've started this fic challenge rather nastily. I guess this is a taste of what's to come!
At least we weren't the first people to mention eating one!

on 2007-07-22 01:10 pm (UTC)It gets about 40 miles to the gallon, honestly, maybe the newer ones are more efficient, or I just drive too fast (the best gas mileage is around 55-65 on the highway). But still, an awesome car. Oil changes have to be done at the dealer (about $45 - a tad pricey), no one else does them at the mini-stations yet, but I only have to do it every 5000-7000 miles.
They run about $24K for a new one right now. We got ours for $19.5K three years ago. So the fuel efficiency may not outweigh the higher price. But it certainly is more environmentally friendly, which can't really have a price tag.

on 2007-07-22 01:22 pm (UTC)Did you happen to look at any other hybrids? What made you choose the Honda?

on 2007-07-22 06:41 pm (UTC)So this dealership 45 minutes away had a Civic Hybrid and we jumped on it. In fact, the car we just bought is almost as hard to get, a Honda Fit. It's not a hybrid, but it's the highest efficiency / highest rated non-hybrid economy car. We ended up driving to the same place to buy it.
