Notes: Some of these links aren't recent, but might still be useful. One link deals with politics explicitly as a helpful preparedness list, I have put it at the bottom of the list under a cut.

1. Dreamwidth Activities

🍄 Holiday Love Meme 2024 has officially opened, as per usual I maintain an index of participants A-Z (myself included)

🍄 [community profile] holiday_wishes has received a lot of activity, you can still post your wishlists 🎁

🍄 [personal profile] wish_upon_a_meme is "a relaxed December gifting event modeled on prompt memes and the dearly departed LJ comm insmallpackages. Here you can request not just fanworks for your fandoms, but book and music recs, holiday greetings, personal anecdotes, pics of people's flowers/cats/holiday decor… whatever you can think of that could go in a comment". Unveiling & filling prompts starts Dec 1st, but prompts can still be posted all through December.

🍄 [community profile] fandomtrees is a multifandom gifting fest, sign-ups close Dec 5th!

🍄 And if you're like, oh boy how do I even keep track of all these: apart from [community profile] fandomcalendar, there's also [community profile] whenisitdue keeping a running list of deadlines for different writing communities, icon challenges, and fests.

2. DW Tips and Inquiries

🍄 [personal profile] captaincassidy: DW Lingo? Kinks Memes? RP Groups?: "Is there a tutorial for Dreamwidth/LJ lingo? A breakdown of what a kink meme is, some etiquette re: RP groups, explanations of acronyms commonly used in said groups, etc.?"

🍄 [personal profile] vriddy: Dreamwidth etiquette question around linking!: "If I write an entry related to something I read in a LOCKED post in a semi-public comm, is it okay to include a link to the locked post?"

🍄 From 2022, but might contain stuff new to someone: [personal profile] theladyscribe's How to Dreamwidth: a linkspam

🍄 [personal profile] goss: Rekindling Community

3. Asking/Giving Recommendations

🍄 [personal profile] liriaen recommends the Netflix series "This World Can't Tear Me Down" (orig. Questo mondo non mi renderà cattivo, i.e. This world won't make me evil!)

🍄 [personal profile] hexmix posted recs for some favourites from this year's ShortBox Comics Fair. Difficult to choose just a few keywords but here you go: period horror with haunted paintings and cannibalism, mature fantasy about healing from trauma and displacement, q***r fantasy romance with a non-magical protagonist.

🍄 [personal profile] captaincassidy is asking for animanga recs where "q***r or POC characters ... aren’t treated like garbage by their authors, but aren’t uwu perfect babs" either.

🍄 [personal profile] sabotabby recommends the If Books Could Kill podcast episode about the non-fiction book "The Anxious Generation" and adds additional commentary.

4. Other Stuff

🍄 Blast from the past (2016): In the comm [community profile] ladybusiness, [personal profile] litomnivore posted Ewan McGregor's Stupid Beautiful Face: A History of Han/Luke and Star Wars Slash

🍄 In [community profile] little_details, [personal profile] prickly_vines asks for input regarding their fantasy story that features a society built with blindness in mind, and received lots of helpful comments.

🍄 [personal profile] fred_mouse: Litsy anyone?: "I've been poking around LibraryThing, and it has a 'link your account to Litsy' option, which I've just done. But I don't know what to do with Litsy, or whether it is just another social media time suck. - Anyone I know here there? Any drive by random people want to tell me about their Litsy self and why I should follow / engage?"

🍄 [personal profile] sewn needed Linux help with mounting a hard drive and found out that apparently the culprit was a Windows setting called 'fast boot'.

I'm impatiently waiting for [personal profile] gdgdbaby's annual Holiday Love Meme (and yes I'm going to provide the directory - it's gonna be the sixth year in a row ♥ I just love making lists ok).

There's also [community profile] holiday_wishes opening soon; I don't even know what I'd ask for but I am excited about finding wishes on people's lists that I can fulfill.

And of course a new round of [community profile] snowflake_challenge coming soon - not sure I have the will or energy to participate, but it's often interesting to read other people's replies.

So I had fallen off the face of the Earth Dreamwidth for a few months. Usually I'm never gone that long, and it was kinda weird. I mean, Dreamwidth is one of the things I could trust to be entertaining and do-able even when the rest of my life is too stressful or a swamp of sadness. Only this time, just the thought of looking at the reading page made me feel tired, and I was questioning the use in having a journal in the first place. In hindsight that was obvious depressive-episode nonsense, but at the time... What's the use, man. What is it even fooor. Who caaares. The world is going to shit and here you are, creating music linkspams and thinking that maybe posting reviews of 1980s Fighting Fantasy game books could be a worthy endeavour.

The thing is — and I couldn't see that when I was in the middle of it, but in my opinion it is very true — there's nothing gained from not sharing my music discoveries or nerdy book reviews. I am not making the world worse by posting them, and if I stopped, the argument could be made that the world would be a tiny little bit more boring.

The only reason I stopped was because it felt overwhelming at the time.

The problem is that so, so many things feel overwhelming, and have felt like that for several years in a row, non-stop. Like, globally. It's not just my own mental (un)health and my change in jobs and my mom's cancer diagnosis. It's also fascism and capitalism and the climate crisis and warfare and pandemic and (and, and.) The world is overwhelming. The world feels unreal. And a lot of the time I disengage more or less completely... and then I feel guilty for disengaging.

Which, again, helps no-one. There's the kind of guilt that can help you become a better person, and then there's useless, self-punishing guilt. I've gone through periods where it's been really difficult to feel happy, much less enthusiastic, about anything. Being able to feel excited about something is a gift, and I don't want that to get diminished solely because my brain weasels decide it's time to set unreasonable standards for what counts as appropriately productive time for society. Concerning my emotional well-being, I'm having a hard enough time as it is. There are many people in the world who are struggling more than I do, it's just that comparing myself to them in these situations does not come from a healthy or honest place. It's just my brain trying to find ways to make myself feel selfish and undeserving and persistently unhappy.

By the way, this is one big reason why I feel so strongly about love memes and try to amplify them. I know they're not for everyone, and that's fine, but for me they're an important opportunity to talk back against my depression brain. Love memes are tangible (virtual, sure, but still visual and printable) proof that you are not the useless, obnoxious person you may think you are on your darker days. Love memes tell you that you have worth, that you can touch the lives of other people, that you'd be missed. I always save my thread to my DW memories. I always reread it several times.
I know that when things get rough, I probably won't be able to feel the emotional weight of it, but I'll know it's there.

(And while I'm at it... I am also super grateful for the three friends who kept talking to me on Discord, often daily, no matter how whiny or uncommunicative I might have felt at any given time. You're the best and our chats mean so, so much to me.)

~*~

All that being said... as much as I did miss Dreamwidth and my friendslist, taking a break (if involuntary) turned out to be a good thing. I'm sure I missed out on a lot of information, but I return with a feeling of having been refreshed, of having renewed energy for posting. I want to write (again), which is great. In fact, I have signed up/am in the process of signing up for several challenges in 2023:

🖋 I am trying a second time for [community profile] inkingitout, where the goal is to write at least 75,000 words in one year. I tried in 2022 and started my Writerly Creativity Car with optimism, only to immediately drive it into a ditch (see above: depression, months-long absence, etc). The great part about [community profile] inkingitout is that it doesn't matter because every year you get a fresh start. Plus, the content you write doesn't have to be exclusive, nor does it need to be fiction. Essays, book reviews, stuff you write for other challenges - it all counts. So I am once again revving the engine of my WCC, smiling optimistically.

🖋 I am going to try my hand at [personal profile] coll's Fannish Fifty challenge. I do have a few ideas of what to write about, ranging from Poppy Z. Brite's Lost Souls and horror movies that messed me up to German music television from the early 2000s and aforementioned Fighting Fantasy game books from the 80s/90s. Book and movie reviews, of course. Perhaps a ship manifesto, if I'm lucky? The hard part is going to be maintaining a semblance of a posting schedule. I suck at those.

🖋 I am also going to offer another round of the "ask me anything" meme that I did back in January (only next year I'm moving it to February - ETA: questions are here). I had a lot of fun with it and from what I could tell, so did my readers, and I enjoyed the inspiration and the nudges to contemplate things I usually don't think about.

🖋 And last but not least, of course I am participating in this year's [community profile] snowflake_challenge. [personal profile] vriddy described its advantages wonderfully: "This is how I met nearly everyone I know on Dreamwidth. It’s a super chill, super fun event with a new challenge/question every couple of days, no sign-ups, you can answer as many or as few as you want, you can do none and just go see what everyone else is doing and reply on their journals. A lot of the challenges center around the things that bring joy in fandom. People will suggest active communities, exchange Dreamwidth tips, share anecdotes or fanworks or recs, and it’s just a super fun time full of activity."

📃 The Sad Bastard Cookbook is out. I do believe there is a Sad Bastard in all of us, and "Food you can make so you don't die" is a tagline that sets the bar comfortingly low. This cookbook will not make you feel guilty. When you say you were too tired to buy anything but three packs of ramen noodles, this cookbook nods understandingly and literally opens with ramen noodle recipes right out of the gate. It knows that on some days we can at maximum Eat a Dill Pickle Out of the Jar While Standing in Front of the Fridge (p. 91). It's also very funny and actually helpful.

A while ago I mentioned the Dreamwidth Stats page, and [personal profile] snickfic and I were wondering how they defined accounts that are "active in some way". The number seemed to be very low compared to the overall amount of accounts, and it never matched up with the numbers given for accounts that "posted an entry in the last X days". I couldn't find any info in the FAQ, so I decided to open a support request today and got a swift reply by staff member [personal profile] jennifer, which I'm quoting in its entirety below:

Hi there!

The reason this isn't documented very well is because that part of the site code was inherited whole cloth from LiveJournal and hasn't been altered by us very much since then. A look at the code indicates that a user is marked "active in some way" whenever they log in, post an entry, or leave a comment.

That does seem like a small percentage, but one thing to keep in mind is that an OpenID account is created for every LiveJournal user who ever left a comment on a journal that was later imported to Dreamwidth. Many of those are never used, but they still count towards the total number of accounts on our site.

Best,
--Jen

I completely forgot about the OpenID accounts! Those would inflate the account numbers significantly, whenever there's a new influx of LJ people importing their journals over to Dreamwidth.

(Side note: I've been using DW for many years and still learn something new about it all the time. ♥)

Did you know that Dreamwidth has a Stats Page? You get a statistic, and you get a statistic, and you, and YOU!

The sign-ups for [community profile] hannigramtropefest start on May 7th - see here for more details.

Random community I had no idea existed: [community profile] podfic_calendar. So basically a [community profile] fandomcalendar but for podfic.

Older question (back in February) about recs organization, asked by [personal profile] doranwen in [community profile] fictional_fans: "If you're looking through a recs list for a fandom, one which is more than just a tiny handful of fics, how do you want to see the fics ordered?"

Two former LJ-only communities that I completely missed moving to Dreamwidth for good: [community profile] fail_fandomanon (official move announcement dating back to 2014, wow) and [community profile] therealljidol which moved this month. (I did feel tempted sometimes to sign up for an Idol contest, but let's be real: I can't finish things at my best of times, much less write on command. So I'll just wistfully stare at the participants being creative.)

We made it through another week! I'm proud of us. Now, let's get through this one.

[community profile] addme is under new management (the admins say hi and the profile page has been revised).

[community profile] friending_memes' current friendzy is about Hobbies and Interests. All entries are made by [personal profile] chromaskies, but if you have a friending meme of your own that you'd like to see promoted, you can leave a comment on the guidelines entry and they will post about it.

[personal profile] vriddy posted Creating a (fan) comm: spoiler policy, going into detail what it was/is like as an admin to create and maintain a spoiler policy. I also found this sentence interesting: "Dreamwidth might actually be one of the last places where it's possible to be anime-only and stay away from spoilers, thanks to the almighty cut." A lot of other social platforms do not have features that lend themselves well to hiding spoilers.

In one entry, [personal profile] yourlibrarian wrote about the Killing Eve finale (I'm linking to the calendar view to keep the LJ-cuts intact) and also meta in response to a statement about why fans are not building their own platforms, suggesting it is not just about (lack of) confidence in tech skills, but also about generational differences and what kind of platform (and therefore, what amount of necessary DIY/moderating/running things yourself) you are used to.

Older (2018) meta by [personal profile] rhodanum: [meta] » of fandoms and 'antis': "Kickstarted by my bitter disappointment in running into an old friend on here and seeing them turned into another 'how dare you engage in rape/incest/abuse apologism!' zealot, here are a series of comments I left on Reddit, a while ago, explaining the social roots behind the whole anti phenomenon when someone brought up the thing in r/HobbyDrama, explaining exactly how, in ten short years, fandom went from YKINMK to.... this complete shitshow we've got on our hands now."

[personal profile] cortue has March Recs for various books (among them the classic Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, which I still haven't read, and Vespertine by Margaret Rogerson which was described as "Gideon the Ninth meets Venom"), and also some podcasts and a resource for people who need practice with different English pronouns.

[personal profile] rachelmanija's book reviews are always interesting. (Example: Xiran Jay Zhao's Iron Widow.) Shame on me for not having commented (yet!) on the Night Shift (Stephen King) review, it's a nostalgia fest for me. Also, I've added Daryl Gregory's Revelator to my to-buy list, thanks to the review.

[community profile] 3weeks4dreamwidth is celebrating Dreamwidth's anniversary!
Come join in for fun, memes, activities, and more ♥

Man, is that the cutest banner illustration or what.

A bit of background for people who haven't been around during previous rounds: Three Weeks For Dreamwidth (sometimes shortened to 3w4dw) is an annual activity fest where you post some or all of your content exclusively to Dreamwidth for three weeks, as a way to promote and enrich the Dreamwidth community and stimulate discussion and connection taking place on Dreamwidth. There are no rules for what the content must be, you're invited to come up with some fun activities on your own if you like, and after the three weeks you are allowed to repost that content elsewhere. Just, like, from April 25th to May 15th it's Dreamwidth Party Time, by DW users for DW users. :)

The initial community, [community profile] three_weeks_for_dw, was created in 2010 but had activity drop off and the admin didn't respond to messages. As per Dreamwidth's TOS they only transfer community ownership (i.e. admin rights) to someone else if there's some dire circumstances requiring action, such as spamming, abuse, or other TOS violations. An admin simply vanishing into the ether does not qualify, so that's why we now have the new community [community profile] 3weeks4dreamwidth, under new management. That community will be the info hub to let people know what you posted, invite them for activities, or check out what other users have done.

3w4dw also has its own feed on the Latest Things page (where new public posts show up), so you can take a gander to see people's creativity pour out more or less in real time! All you need to do to make your own entries show up is adding one or more of the recognised tags:

Please welcome [personal profile] leila_data, who created a journal just yesterday. We know each other from AO3 where I commented at length on their wonderful Dragon Age fanfic, and among other things we talked about where we usually hang out and now we have a Leila_Data. Very nice! Pay them a visit, there's already an introductory post & listed interests and I know there are people on my flist who have some fandoms in common. :)
honigfrosch: a stark, stylized black and white photo of a man's face in semi profile (Default)
Not due to any friending meme (tho I'll get to the current one soon-ish, I guess,) but people I have seen pop up a lot in comments on friends' posts / interesting meta entries / Snowflake Challenges and whatnot, and also people I remember from the LJ days of old (it's so nice to see that many of us are still here!) ... so yeah, a kind of nostalgia does play a part in this. And the feeling that I want to do more, have more, contribute more because DW is... it's home, but there's the acute sense of missing things, of not having what I used to have in ways of community or discussion. Some of you have talked about similar feelings, I think you'll understand.

I hope you'll forgive me that I'm not introducing myself to people individually, that task feels too much right now. I do have a sticky entry with info and recently updated interests and a "best of" portfolio, I think you'll find enough to decide whether you want to reciprocate. Anything else you need to know, leave a comment and I'll answer gladly.

➠ Everybody should take this poll by [personal profile] rachelmanija (the reveal is in a separate post)

[community profile] fictional_fans is a community that functions both as a "general fandom community for new users and experienced ones," and a "place for people new to DW-style communities to learn how a community works and what it looks like." Very relaxed and a good place to ask questions and post the nifty stuff you found. Some recent discussions that caught my eye:
• someone looking for communities for supporting creative projects of all kinds (i.e. not just writing)
• someone about to create their first DW community asking what makes for good community guidelines/code of conduct for a fan comm

➠ This also reminded me that I have a memory category for "Dreamwidth" which includes these sorts of entries... guides for people coming over from Tumblr, how to use DW, how to find like-minded people, and the like. (One day I will coalesce that into a proper master post, but until then...)

➠ Finally, [personal profile] sixbeforelunch mused on one possible reason why DW may look much quieter to outsiders than it actually is.

(I'm going to crosspost most of these to [community profile] meta_warehouse soon, apologies in advance to the people who will see this twice)
honigfrosch: a stark, stylized black and white photo of a man's face in semi profile (Default)
I'm bringing back the flower-shaped bullet points, baby
(Because it's winter but Oscar the purple cape rain daisy decided not to give a shit and bloom all year round)

❀ By now I've whined a few times about missing the meta discussions that we had on Dreamwidth in ye olden tymes, so it's only fair when I also point out that a meta comm does exist that is still alive: [community profile] meta_warehouse. I might have mentioned it before but this is the official PSA. This is a meta comm. You can submit your posts there, or link to them. You can link to other people's posts (if they don't mind that sort of thing, and I, for one, absolutely don't: you may submit my meta anywhere you see fit.) Do it. Be bold. Be absolutely shameless in your self-linkage. Do it for [community profile] meta_warehouse. Do it for us. Do it for Dreamwidth. *trumpets are blaring in the distance, a flag with the Dreamwidth sheep symbol painted in glitter gets slowly hoisted into the air*

❀ Also, there's a multifandom meta newsletter on Tumblr, at an account called "fandomrandomfandom", and [personal profile] yourlibrarian created a DW feed for it that you can subscribe to: [syndicated profile] random_fandom_meta_feed. You can also send up to 3 links to the FRF mods through a convenient Google form (you need to give an email address though.)

❀ I made some valuable progress on the fannish front:
a) I finally commented on a gift fic that I received for last year's [community profile] holiday_wishes (and the gifter was really gracious about it, whew!)
b) I've become more proactive about commenting on AO3 fics in general
c) I polished the set-up entries on my reccing community and set them to public: what I like in fic (I call it "The Yays"), explanation of my tags system, and a quick intro. I also wrote an entry where I offer betareading services (mainly SPAG) and thanks to that I learned how to HTML-code mouseover text! That's several steps closer to opening the comm officially -- basically all I need is a template for the actual recs that I feel good with, and it's ready to go. The interesting part: apparently what held me back was the belief that I had to include a detailed list of my Do Not Wants/Pet Peeves/Squicks. Turns out I don't. I'm reccing my fanwork favourites, why would they include my squicks? And why would the person reading my recs need to know about Sir Not-Appearing-In-These-Recs? What bullshit.

❀ Might be of interest for people in Germany and some other European countries (Austria & Belgium, Netherlands, Luxemburg): there's a new streaming service called Sooner that got established in 2020 and is a German-French joint venture. It focuses on arthouse & independent cinema, as well as biographies, documentaries, and some European classics, and sees itself as a deliberate alternative to mainstream VOD services. They manage their portfolio through partnerships with film schools/universities and festivals. (And yes, they do have an LGBT section.) I signed up for the 14-day free trial, but I'm considering the switch to the standard subscription afterwards which, if you pay for a year in advance, would be 5 Euros per month. The reason I signed up was that I couldn't find Guillermo del Toro's The Devil's Backbone streaming anywhere else for a sensible price. The only disadvantage so far is that sometimes the german dub is hardcoded into the movie and subtitles aren't the default. But they definitely have stuff you won't get elsewhere, because they pick it up directly from film festivals like Cannes, Sundance, or Berlinale.

Music!

• I've been on a bit of a Meat Beat Manifesto kick recently, mainly tracks from the 1996 double album "Subliminal Sandwich". I only knew them from the 1999 Blair Witch soundtrack which featured She's Unreal, but their paranoia-infused blend of Trip Hop, Downtempo and whatever else electronica they feel like including, really struck a chord with me in the times we live in. The best songs, I feel, are smooth and uneasy at the same time. The urban darkness of Phone Calls From The Dead, or the sinister ASMR of Transmission (which is fascinating on another level because you can experience the rhythmic structure of the song differently depending on whether you put the warbling sample on 3/4 or 4/4, and I've noticed that sometimes my brain switches in the middle.) The biggest asset is, of course, their truly excellent cover of the 1988 noise-punk anthem "Asbestos Lead Asbestos" by World Domination Enterprises, and those two versions are literally the reason that I created [community profile] music_twins. Compare and enjoy!

• California-based solo artist AURAGRAPH put a new album out this month, and Metamerism is the best you could ask for when it comes to vaporwave-infused 80s pop/electronica instrumentals. Stylish as fuck. Did not have quite enough money for the LP but I did buy the tape.

• I've been absolutely intrigued by this special take of Boards of Canada's "Happy Cycling" from a 1998 Peel Session broadcast that was never included on the official session album. The unsettling choir is put more into the foreground, and it's just so beautifully eerie with an overlay of softness near the end. Love it.

• I know that Minutemen's acoustic track Cohesion (from their 1984 album "Double Nickels On The Dime") often gets made fun of as "the only punk song even your grandma would like," but it's simply really good.

• I've also listened to The Dead Texan a lot (by the band The Dead Texan), from 2004. It has string sections to die for. It's filled with the kind of sadness that you might feel on a very crisp winter morning. The first few minutes of "Glen's Goo" especially reach right for your solar plexus to squeeze the heart. The enigmatically named "When I See Scissors I Can't Help but Think of You" is a ghost story as abstract art installation. And "Beatrice Part 2" is a perfect aural sunrise. Sublime.

That's it from me today! I've successfully distracted my brain from screaming for a bit, and now I'm tired enough that I can hopefully fall asleep quickly. Loser fist bump! *weakly raises fist*

In case you're wondering "Why is Paypal not a viable option to pay for things on this site?", here's some quotes by [staff profile] denise, taken from a [site community profile] dw_news post dated April 14, 2017:

"About six months after opening, PayPal -- our payment processor at the time -- demanded that we censor some of our users' content (mostly involving people talking about sex, usually fictionally, in explicit terms) that was legal and protected speech but that they felt violated their terms for using PayPal. We didn't want to restrict 'adult' and/or explicit content, so PayPal shut down our account with them. [...]
We weren't ready to accept outsourcing the final say on our content restrictions to a huge company with a habit of confiscating your money first and only reconsidering with enough loud bad press, so our account with them remains frozen.

I know this isn't ideal for some people, especially people without a credit card and some people outside the US! I do research alternate payment methods every year or two, to see what other options are out there that might let us take other forms of payment like bank transfers or even just credit card types, over and above the VISA/Mastercard/AmEx that our payment processor supports, that are widely in use in other countries. Pretty much every service I've ever found has unacceptable content restrictions or charges fees that are high enough that we'd lose money on small payments, though. (Our existing payment processor is juuuust at the edge of "fees high enough that small payments lose money", which is why you can't buy Dreamwidth points in blocks fewer than 30 points ($3).)"

The whole post is worth a read if you want to know about Dreamwidth's history, how they make money, who runs the site and how, or what their content policies are.

yessss [community profile] holiday_wishes is opening soon (Nov 15th)

In less good news, [community profile] fandomgiftbox is dead in the water, in the same year I first decided to sign up for it. (Nice.) No update since June and mods don't reply to comments. However, a few participants have taken to posting their fills in comments to the June update, and as there's no official hub to collect them, I hope more people will see it and find their gift or link to what they have created.

[personal profile] snickfic is hosting The No-Frills Friending Meme, 2020 edition. Already 3 pages of comments to peruse and find cool people to follow, and hopefully there will be more! (h/t [personal profile] strewnstars)

❁ You can still post wishlists to [community profile] holiday_wishes, the deadline is December 31st!

❁ There's also [community profile] fandomtrees, a mulitfandom gifting fest (but non-fandoms, like recipes or music recommendations, are permitted)!
"Participants sign up with information about the fandoms, prompts, etc, they want, as well as any DNWs. Other people will then leave gifts under the trees, and the mod will reveal those on the reveal date."
It looks like the barrier for participating is very low, but you'll have to be quick: sign-ups are open for only a few more days, until December 4th.

❁ I plan on posting to an add-me community soon, so for any newcomers who are into horror short stories and/or music mixes, the content of my Halloween 2020 grab-bag is still available. Last chance tho, as I'm going to let the links expire until next year's Halloween.

[personal profile] sonofgodzilla did some vampire shitposting (her words, not mine) regarding Anne Rice's novels, and I love it. Part one is more general, part two is a critique of The Tale of the Body Thief (content warning for non-explicit mention of rape).
"At its worst, Anne Rice's work is recursive, continually re-treading the same ground, telling the same story, first published as a short story, then expanded into a novel, then again retold in every successive novel as she reworks the same material, adding in layer after layer, writing endless backstory, endless detail in a fashion that does not push forward the narrative into the future, but simply bloats the present. At its best, her work is rich with detail, full of imagination and colour, with such focus that every single aspect of its world is represented. The trouble is there is no in-between."
(Thematically related: Maven of the Eventide recently posted a Youtube video of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, Ranked from most to least favourite, clocking in at 1 hour 13 minutes. (It's 15 books, so...)

❁ A bit late to the party, but: Recently two short story anthologies dealing with magical pets have come out that are gay/lesbian romance. (h/t [personal profile] minoanmiss)

Amazon links: Her Magical Pet and His Magical Pet. Among the authors are Yoon Ha Lee, Pamela Dean, and Rachel Manija Brown. Some of the featured magical creatures are a selkie, vampires, a baby griffin, a werewolf, a ghost bird, a flying bichon frisé and a winged cat, and a formless entity from an eldritch dimension.

These are benefit collections, meaning that all proceeds will be donated to OutRight Action International, a non-profit organization that fights for the human rights for LGBTIQ people* everywhere. They are the only LGBTIQ organization that has a permanent presence to advocate at the United Nations Headquarters in New York and hold special consultative status there.

* The acronyms and descriptions that I've seen people on DW use for this organisation are all over the place, but LGBTIQ is what OutRight uses consistently on their own homepage and all official appearances. Please don't misquote them.

You guys, I just wanted to say that you make me happy. I like seeing you get excited about things, and sharing your woes, and figuring out difficult stuff, and posting pictures or poetry or linkspams or just dumping out some brain contents and calling it a day (it's a valid mood). And it's making me happy to see you update, period, because it means you're still there, and there enough to update, which is good even when the rest of the world is a dumpster fire. So yeah, thanks for being there. You're awesome.

How the hell does someone get the username icon with proper links etc into the subject line of an entry??????

???????????????????????????????????????????

ETA: forget I said anything. When I tried two days ago at [community profile] metaquotes it didn't work, but now it does. I have no idea why.

Have sligthly updated my Distractions sticky with a few more songs, over 30 free movie screenplays courtesy of IndieWire, and a link to the Generation Kill rewatch that is going to happen during April at [community profile] heavyartillery.

Legendary musician & producer Gudrun Gut created an all-female Spotify playlist featuring a wide variety of styles and ages. It should have something for everyone—give it a listen!

[personal profile] thrillingdetectivetales's Fuck Yeah Friday! entry is a recommendation of the 2005 Wes Craven horror movie Cursed, which will forever be remembered as That Movie Where A Werewolf Flips You Off Angrily. Even if you're not interested in werewolves, check out that screencap. It is glorious.
