one great city!
Its the slogan for Winnipeg and also the title of the Weakerthans song about winnipegers love/hate relationship with the city (its a giant inside joke, what a revelation!). Had a great time in the peg, saw a snake pit, a nudist,
a metal show, and a giant statue of Louis Riel, among other things. Manitoba is a funny place as it kind of is right in the middle of Canada and somehow represents the different aspects of Canada, even putting a large french population in there as well. Its got its extremes from metal to punk fans more or less. Its main rival seems to be Regina according to the dude at the metal show who noted that 'Winnipeg rules! Regina sucks!'. And its a town of refreshing modesty in comparison to the self-percieved greatness of Vancouver or Toronto. Wouldn't mind returning someday to check it out.
Left yesterday for Saskatchewan. It was a pretty seamless transition, we actually had to play close attention to the border. Both are provinces known for wheat and NDP provincial governments. Saskatchewan is a bit more rural than Manitoba since Winnipeg is one of the largest cities in Canada at 600,000, and more or less dominates the culture of the province. Saskatchewan is like a province sized Bruce County with two cities each the size of Oshawa. And its extremely friendly.
Quite the transition from hanging out with my friend Julie in Winnipeg to chilling with JP's Great Aunt and Uncle. Will explore Regina and Saskatchewan today, and then probably head west agian tomorrow to Alberta.
Time to get folksy!
