So, uh, I originally had it in mind to make this entry a matter of me vouching against common consensus in favor of a controversial creative decision concerning an anime series that pretty much changed the course of my creative spirit in turn—but upon further inspection, it turns out that the director responsible for said decision and more is kind of a massive dickhead and maybe a pretentious hack besides…
…So before I go back to my semi-regular epistemic self-examinations again, I figure I’ll just do some especially timely preaching to the choir instead!
As a shitpost peruser and resident brainrotten for some years now, I have to admit that it doesn’t take much to make me laugh, broadly speaking—or to muster a smirk and a snort, at least. With that little in mind, I suppose simply saying that I find The Amazing World of Gumball to have been consistently comedic throughout its run on Cartoon Network isn’t especially high praise…
…Though, I suppose there are things I could cite to make such a statement more tangible—like the sheer number of gags woven into even a single minute of the average episode, for one. Beyond even that is the breadth of forms its sense of humor is wont to manifest, from sharply undersold snarks and snipes to bombastic escalations of bits ad absurdum.
All of such is nothing to say of the craftsmanship in service of it all; the anarchic variety of its visual aesthetics is its foremost claim to fame, sure, but I feel the fidelity of its soundscape is worth almost as much praise—from its variety of heartful vocal performances over the years (to the effect of some punchlines in themselves, even) to particularly palpable silences between perfectly punctual stings…oh, and some outright slappers in their own right.
What’s more, occasionally shining through all the show’s appreciably abrasive nonsense is a surprising sense of pathos coursing its characters; the central Wattersons specifically, of course, have explored the most emotional depth throughout—but the (amazing™) world of Elmore (and more) as a whole has been filtered through many a (melo)dramatic lens, even if that very fact finds itself inevitably exploited for punchlines…
…So, uh, yeah—get on Gumball, I guess, if you somehow haven’t already! At the very least, I wager it’ll make for you some easily tunable background noise, as per the several clip compilations and live streams available on official YouTube channels (or, y’know, Cartoon Network’s TV channel). There’s even a comeback oncoming for more episodes later this July(/October)!
Now if you’ll excuse me, I myself have some aforementioned gloom to get back to instead…

Date: Jul. 18th, 2025 02:25 pm (UTC)I’m admittedly not sure of just how much I’ve watched myself, but it was definitely formative for me as an increasingly edgy tween (right up there alongside Chowder reruns and whatever else I tuned into on Boomerang)—and it’s still one of my go-tos for mealtime whenever I don’t feel like whittling down my ‘Watch later’ list XD
