This is today's freebie. It was inspired by a prompt from [personal profile] gs_silva. It also fills the "Ambiguous Situation" square in my 6-1-26 card for the Hazbin Hotel Fest. This poem belongs to the series Schrodinger's Heroes.

move the coyotes

I have several pictures of the "coyotes," but none at the top of my camera roll, so I searched my photos for "wolf" (since that's what these coyotes look like to me). My photos turned up an actual Irish Wolfhound, whom I don't remember meeting at all, along with several pictures of Mimi running, which I found hilarious and charming.

Then I searched for "coyote," and lo, this picture came up.

coyote and friends )

One of our neighbors has two cardboard "coyotes" that she puts by the river to keep geese from coming up on the banking. Apparently real coyotes move, so the geese are more convinced by this ruse if the coyotes are not in the same place every time they pass by.

The same neighbor also has a hammock, hence my explanation, "She says the rent to sit in the hammock is to move the coyotes, so I moved a coyote."

(I first encountered the coyotes years ago, at night, while I was out walking with Mimi by flashlight. I genuinely though we had come upon a live animal and I quickly scooped Mimi up and backed away. Mimi was completely unworried, which I admitted after the fact should have been a clue.)

Seventh of the Seventh.

Having just finished the rough draft of a Project Hail Mary fic, as is customary, I'm obligated to ask if anyone knows where I can find an icon. I've checked [community profile] fandom_icons and I'm sure there's another place or two someone else already knows about.

I've got to figure out a title, so thankfully, I'm not in a huge rush.

I meant to post last night but I could barely keep my eyes open so I went to bed early (and missed a super rare Mets comeback in Atlanta!) and slept for 10 glorious hours! I felt great at work today, and got some stuff done, and made some suggestions about the September board meeting agenda that I am sure the CEO and the Chair will not like, but they wanted to get radical and also not overrun the meeting time by 45 minutes again, and I offered a good way to do it to my boss. We'll see if anyone bites.

I am off tomorrow for the dentist - it should just be a cleaning (though I am braced to hear I need yet another crown) but I am always so tired when it's over. And my team meeting on Tuesday got cancelled so I am tempted to take next Tuesday off since I'm already off Wednesday (my birthday), Thursday, and Friday of next week. My boss was like, sure! but I'm still thinking about it.

I thought I had something else to post about but I can't remember... oh right, I finally watched Project Hail Mary the other night. I enjoyed it but it was too long. And there was not enough Eva Stratt, who was the best thing in the movie.

Poetry Fishbowl Open!

Starting now, the Poetry Fishbowl is open! Today's theme is "Don't add to the casualty list in an emergency." I will be checking this page periodically throughout the day. When people make suggestions, I'll pick some and weave them together into a poem ... and then another ... and so on. I'm hoping to get a lot of ideas and a lot of poems.

I picked this theme for today from the selected list of themes, because of the violent storms that swept through central Illinois in late June. Here's my post about Tornado Alley moving from the Great Plains through the Midwest to the Southeast.

Among my previous poems that mention tornadoes or other violent storms are "A Tornado of Thought," "Windswept," "Know What You Stand For," "Better to Meet Danger," "In Growth, Reform, and Change," and "Nature's Great Masterpiece," and "The Pequot War."

Established settings in Tornado Alley: Omaha Reservation and Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraska (Polychrome Heroics), Stillwater, Oklahoma (Polychrome Heroics), Waxahachie, Texas (Schrodinger's Heroes), River City and Ava and Bluehill, Missouri (Polychrome Heroics), Onion City and Urbanburg, Illinois (Polychrome Heroics), Easy City, Louisiana (Polychrome Heroics), Ninovan, Tennessee (Daughters of the Apocalypse), Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Center
for Elephant Conservation in Florida (Daughters of the Apocalypse).

I'll be soliciting ideas for first responders, troubleshooters, activists, rebels, Women Who Run with the Saberteeth, explorers, refugees, runaway youth, housemates, siblings, parents, teachers, clergy, police, soldiers, leaders, superheroes, supervillains, teammates, failure analysts, ethicists, other people who get into dire situations, running into a fire while others are running out of it, rescuing people, protesting, rebelling, planning, panicking, throwing in the towel, escaping, running like you stole something, adventuring, divorcing, teaching, leaving your comfort zone, discovering things, conducting experiments, observation changing experiments, troubleshooting, improvising, adapting, cleaning up messes, cooperating, taking over in an emergency, saving the day, discovering yourself, studying others, testing boundaries, coming of age, learning what you can (and can't) do, sharing, preparing for the worst, expecting the unexpected, fixing what's broke, upsetting the status quo, changing the world, accomplishing the impossible, recovering from setbacks, returning home, war zones, disaster areas, wastelands, trails, sailing ships, distant lands, the forest primeval, prehistory, liminal zones, schools, homeless shelters, prisons, hotels, churches, sharehouses, campfires, laboratories, supervillain lairs, makerspaces, nonhuman accommodations and adaptations, stores, farmer's markets, starships, alien planets, magical lands, foreign dimensions, other places where disasters happen, cataclysms, natural disasters, climate change, the end of the world, S-risks and X-risks, unhappy relationships, PACE your planning, protest rallies, travel mishaps, sudden surprises, the buck stops here, trial and error, supplements that turn out to be mutagenic, intercultural entanglements, asking for help and getting it, enemies to friends/lovers, interdimensional travel, lab conditions are not field conditions, superpower manifestation, the end of where your framework actually applies, ethics, innovation, problems that can't be solved by hitting, teamwork, found family, complementary strengths and weaknesses, personal growth, and poetic forms in particular.

A Conflagration of Dragons features the Six Races struggling to survive as the dragons take over more and more territory.

Crystal Wood is about how the mass death of trees can wreck civilization.

The Daughters of the Apocalypse has people trying to find enough resources to survive, when former cities are unsafe.

Not Quite Kansas deals with demons, magic, and other mayhem.

One God's Story of Mid-Life Crisis follows Shaeth as he works on becoming the God of Drunks after quitting as the God of Evil. Addiction always has the potential for disaster.

Path of the Paladins includes some really awful situations due to divine politics and mortal foolishness.

Peculiar Obligations deals with Quakers, pirates, and organized crime.

Polychrome Heroics has ordinary humans, supernaries, blue-plate specials, superheroes, supervillains, primal and animal soups all trying to get along and figure out how to make a functional society. Among the more relevant threads are Berettaflies, the Big One, Dr. Infanta, Iron Horses, Officer Pink, Shiv, and Trichromatic Attachments.

Schrodinger's Heroes has a lot of situations that can destroy things, up to and including whole dimensions.

The Wandering is a series about fantasy time travel where people loop back within their own lifespan.

Or you can ask for something new.

Boxes and Rude Parcel Machines

I think I have an idea for the new [community profile] fan_flashworks challenge now. If I get my things packed quickly enough, I might still have the time to write it now. I'm not sure how much time I'll have in the following days. Tomorrow I'll be on the train for 2.5h and I'll have to do some emergency shopping to make sure I can survive the next two days of work. Since I have 12 hour shifts, I doubt I'll have the energy to write, but then, who knows? I might. :)

I went to buy some packing tape from our local office supplies store and the lady gave me a free box to ship my things with. I put it on the way earlier, but it was a hassle. The parcel machine decided I should use the large door on the top. I'm not supposed to do much physical labour yet, so this was probably just the universe telling me to go fuck myself again. But it was just somewhat uncomfortable and my healing wounds are still intact. I'm also 164 cm tall, so it was all tippy toes too. Thank goodness I could reach it at all. Life is not kind to us hobbits.

Birdfeeding

Today is cloudy and warm. We got a little rain yesterday.

I fed the birds. I haven't seen much activity yet.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 7/7/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

I've seen a gray catbird splashing in the big red birdbath.

EDIT 7/7/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

EDIT 7/7/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

Sparrows and house finches are eating from the hopper feeder.

EDIT 7/7/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

I also walked around the yard a bit. Cosmos are blooming in the east-west strip of the prairie garden. Sunflowers are up in several places but not blooming yet. There are some zinnias too. :D

EDIT 7/7/26 -- I cracked 6 apricot pits and got 4 usable seeds, which I bagged in damp sand to cold-stratify in the refrigerator.

Fireflies are out. Cicadas are singing. I saw 2 bats swooping over the house yard.

I am done for the night.

So yesterday’s intent was to go to town, see A Perfect Life, then Bleach and Backrooms. So let’s see how that went.

Before I went through The Mandalorian And Grogu soundtrack finally came, yipee! Strnage lc though the physical disc has one less track than Spotify does which I didn’t notice until I ripped it this morning.

The trip to town went ok. I went a lil early to check if the co-op by the station had the mandalorian drinks cause I saw they were on offer but alas they just had the fruit shoots and the Robinsons cordials (which I may stoke up on the mango one is really nice)

In town I didn’t do much, just popped in Poundland then went straight to the cinema.

Trailers for A Private Life
Wild Horse Nine: Looks like it could be funny but I’m not sure it’s something I’d watch
Camp Miasma: I was sold on this the moment Gillian’s character said ‘there’s a whole at the bottom of the lake where the films come from’ so glad it has a date
There was a music thing I missed the title of
Tony: something about the life of Anthony Bourdain, looks like it could be pretty good, again, not sure I’d see it myself

About two thirds of the way through my right eye started aching so I spent the back half of it with my eye closed or covered up. That was fine to finish off something but not upideal to watch a whole other thing, thankfully I just got the ticket for A Private Life, cause there was an hour ago between it and Bkeach I intended to use for lunch then come back.

So instead I left, popping in Aldi to kill time before getting on the train home. Of course the train had issues too. It stopped at the station before home and stayed there for over 10 minutes without explanation.

I don’t mind that much that I didn’t see Bleach, cause I’m sure I’d be lost, but I might be able to see Backrooms cause it has been extended a few days next week. (Though I am hoping to do Minions And Monsters/Evil Dead Burn and The Odyssey next week.) I do wanna get the Moana cup the cinema is getting for mum, cause one topper is Heihei so 8 wanna get it before we see it (if we do) cause she loves him for some reason.

Once home I pretty much flopped, watched Castle, did some two point hospital (badly) and then waited for The Pale Horse to come on sky mix. It was an ok adaption and one of those things were you were spotting people. There was Louise Jameson and Jean Marsh among others. Plus there was one guy I couldn’t place, I recognised his voice but couldn’t place him cause of his glasses. Then he took them off and I saw it was Andy Serkis. I guess Clark Kent just wearing glasses isn’t a bad disguise as people think.

I didn’t do much after it. I yapper to a friend, did a little gaming but the call cut out then my eyes went achy so I just went up to bed.

This morning after putting the soundtrack on my laptop, then pod thing, I watched a Heated Rivalry ep (I meant to last night). The rest of the day is gonna be waiting on the food shop, then Seapeekay’s subathon and then… Who knows.

3 rainy day thoughts

*Hooray for rain! We need it for sure.

*Back to the office: I guess? Now that they're not giving us food anymore, I'm trying some overnight oats. Will report back!

*Two hours into the 11-hour 'werewolves and crochet' book. So far there has been very little werewolf or crochet content. I am enjoying the sibling content, despite most them being off-page. Almost all the audiobooks I've tried have met the bar of 'make driving more interesting,' and I expect this one will too. If not, I have several others downloaded and ready to go!
