So, several songs from Nightwish's new album Dark Passion Play have wound up floating around, and I've had a listen. Here's my thoughts on the tracks I've heard so far -

I am pissed off about CD distribution here in Canada. I ordered Kamelot's new CD 'Ghost Opera' a few weeks ago and was told it would be out yesterday, and that I could pick it up then. Went in to HMV to get it yesterday, and was informed that 'EMI usually is slow with this kinda thing, check back in a couple weeks, it should be here then'. SHOULD? If they'd just told me this to BEGIN with I'd have just ordered it online...

So, I also decided that since I had to wait, I might as well get a couple other things. I asked about Within Temptation's new CD 'The Heart of Everything' and After Forever's 'After Forever'. These two albums, I was told, would take 8 weeks or so to get in, and I'd have to PRE-pay for them. Oh, and each would be about $40. What the hell? None of this makes any sense, not in this modern day and age where I could buy these CDs off eBay from RUSSIA and get them in LESS THAN A WEEK.

So basically, WTF is with Canadian record stores?

So, I bought the thing. I've listened to it quite a few times now. I've decided to spew forth my thoughts on it. Without further ado...

Nightwish's new single Eva is, without a doubt, different. I'm still kind of up in the air as to whether or not I think Anette can meet the expectations set by Tarja vocally. On it's own, the song is decent. It has a melancholy feel and a decent pace that isn't too fast or too slow - your typical 'slow' song that most metal bands produce one or two of each album. I somewhat question Nightwish's choice in this as the first encounter most of us will have with their new vocalist. Anette certainly can cut it as a pop singer, but Eva doesn't let us know if she can handle more 'metal' songs. All that said, I do like the song. I just want to see some harder stuff, and I want to see how the old stuff sounds with it's new singer.

So, I found out that Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation, and The Gathering are in town for a concert on Tuesday. I found this out just recently. I am right pissed off at the moment, since I'm a pretty sure there is no way in hell I am going to be able to get tickets at this point. Not to mention the lack of minions to take with me on such short notice (I hate going to concerts alone, it just feels bloody weird). Ah well, what can ya do, I suppose? *sigh*

Its May 20th today. Ten days until May 30th, and the release of Nightwish's new single 'Eva', and the unveiling of their new female vocalist. Anyone else besides be interested in seeing how this all works out? I am hoping that whoever the new singer is, she is able to do justice to the band's musical style.
