I drew Rhaena with this hair a few years ago!
i wanted to follow up on this post by taking a closer look at the evolution of Viridia's costumes through the season, in particular the colors. in the early episodes, we meet her wearing diaphanous white nightgowns. she doesn't leave the house; her defining characteristic is that she was a wife but is now a widow
when she finally hits the town in episode four, it is in a very pale yellow, only lightly adorned
and then at the party in episode five she is again wearing a pale yellow (in contrast to the deep burgundies/maroons of Cossutia & Cornelia), but this time with much more jewelryโit's a party, after all!
but then something interesting happens: she sees Achillia for the first time, and immediately begins questioning a woman's place in Roman society. at the end of the episode she finally makes an appearance at the arena, in a pale blue that i think will become something of her signature
in the next episode she is again in a light blue, this time in a slightly bolder color (and with even more embellishment, as she has been gussied up for a social call with the fabulously wealthy Cornelia). it is here that she expresses to Ashur her desire to be more than a wife in a house full of pretty, empty things
when we see her at the beginning of episode seven, she is in an even bolder shadeโshe has begun truly coming into her own
and then at the market she is in a more greenish, almost minty blue, perhaps pointedly complementing her mother's dress
at the beginning of episode eight, she is in yet another bold blue, this time closer to her signature shade, almost cornflower. it is here that she seductively flirts with Ashur over a game of latrunculiโthe most confident and self-possessed we have seen her yet
alas, it is not to last. by the end of the episode she will have had a choice put to her: whether or not to marry Pompey; the good of the Republic, or Ashur & her own desires. it is here that we finally see her in a new color as she has made her devastating choiceโthe lavender/lilac of duty & heartbreak
and then it's wedding white, calling back to the beginning of the seasonโshe has chosen, after all, to be a wife, a woman who sits around a house full of pretty, empty things. this white, however, has a slight tinge of lilac grey to it
and finally we are in mourning mode, the customary black
and in the arena at season's end, still attired for mourning, she is in an earthy, even drab brown, a sharp contrast from all the airy whites and blues
some of those pale yellows and blues earlier in the season almost call to mind Lucretia's Gods of the Arena powdery pastel wardrobe (a time when she was relatively innocent), albeit on a grander scaleโLucretia, of course, came from much humbler beginnings. i've noted before some surprising moments of similarity between Viridia and Lucretia, and i wonder if next season, after Uncle Servius has been properly dealt with (one hopes), we will begin to see Viridia in more dramatic reds and oranges as her bloodlust grows, or whether her Feminist Blue (for lack of a better description lol) will reassert itself.
I’m so happy you posted this because I was taking pics of her outfits on tv like it was a concert (and the quality was so terrible lol). I also love fashion analyses because I didn’t notice the colors they placed her in. I also like how she has similar accessories to Cornelia, body jewelry with big statement pendants, ornate belts, and similar dress shapes (wide necklines, deep v necks) sort of signaling that they’re younger and more fashionable (Cossutia and the other Real Housewives usually wear a simpler necklace and a headdress with the more traditional wrapped, toga style Roman dresses that Lucrezia wore). But in the pictures you’ve posted, her hair is similar is similar to her mother’s hair with braided crowns, looser curls, and subtle headdress/crowns which is different from Cornelia’s voluminous updos and smaller, tighter curls.
If I’m following your analysis correctly, and if her uncle continues his oppressive ways, I can also see Viridia’s palette becoming more muted and less flowy in the beginning (because there’s no way he’s letting her wear fashionable colors even if he didn’t care about his brother’s death but he would be the type to commission tighter clothes for her to wear). That is until she’s celebrating her uncle’s death. After that, or in the planning stage, I can see her wearing gemstone colors including widening her palette to shades of orange (think darker shades of yellow like amber and topaz) similar to what her father used to wear and patterned dresses like her mother but vibrant like Lucrezia in season 3. I also see her wearing more purples like Cornelia wears while also growing her collection of Feminist Blues to include darker shades.
So I might be reading too much into it, but these, which Ashur wears often around his house (mostly at night or when he is comfortable) contrasts with his more Roman-style clothes he wears to try and fit in with the rest of the romans in society.
Ashur is often, if not always refered as The Syrian by the Romans because of his origin, as well to set him apart because while he has gained his freedom and a house of his own, he is still seen as nothing but a gladiator and if anything, a man who betrayed his fellow brotherhood and friends for power and status, and else, freedom.
But these clothes show Ashur wearing what I feel are defenitely Middle Eastern inspired clothes. It defenitely feels like it's Roman-Eastern style hybrid with strong Near Eastern and Mesopotamian. The style are of those of loose, flowing garments similar to kaftans or chiton-like robes. The geometrical shapes and patterns are not something we see in the show in the Roman clothes. Bold angular motifs, zigzags, and repeating shapes.
The colors he wears too are bolder and stronger than those in Roman clothes. So this defenitely feels like a way to differentiate him from those on screen who perceive themselves as "purely Roman". He might be now part of the bunch but he is not part of the circle. Both for the romans themselves, the audience and internally, Ashur himself, we all know he is not belonging to them.
I’m so glad someone else noticed this!
I also noticed he wore those clothes less and less as the season went on (maybe because Cornelia was always around?) and only wore Roman clothes everywhere, most of which were much plainer than the wealthier Roman nobles (Proculus’s green outfit with flowers during the last match of the season comes to mind).

Historians have called the way the wind plays with O'Hara's veil when she leaves the church after her wedding a stroke of luck forย John Ford. Far from it, he had instructed the crew to set up wind machines to fan the veil into a perfect circle behind her head then blow it straight up into the air.x
