The Bayeux Tapestry, created in the late 11th century, probably in England for a Norman patron, is one of the most important surviving visual sources for the Norman Conquest of England (1066. Despite its name, it is not a woven tapestry but an embroidery of wool thread on linen extending nearly 70 metres (230 ft). Its narrative follows the succession crisis after the death of Edward the Confessor (reign 1042–1066), the accession of Harold Godwinson (reign January–October 1066), and the campaign of William, Duke of Normandy (later William I, reign 1066–1087) that culminated in the Battle of Hastings (14 October 1066). Beyond political events, its imagery preserves exceptional evidence for contemporary ships, weapons, armour, clothing, architecture, ceremony, and warfare.
