Woke up at 10:00 to my alarm, but didn't get out of bed til 11:00. Then had breakfast and coffee.

Puttered around online for awhile, then showered and dressed.

Then I started packing for my trip. Since I'm leaving Tuesday, and I'm going to be busy tomorrow and Sunday, this was my best time to get the nuts and bolts done.

First I packed my clothes, which meant I went through all of my tee shirts and picked out first the ones I didn't want to bring, then picking specifically the ones I did. I found my pajamas that I'm going to wear, and two pairs of jeans plus what I'm wearing up, seven pairs of shorts, and one long sleaved shirt just in case it gets chilly one day, and my bathing suit.

Then after I packed all that I came out to the living room, and fit the three boxes of ashes into the other suitcase. They fit no problem, I also put in the three photos I'm bringing, two of Oldest Brother, and one of my parents together. I'm pretty sure I will be able to fit my computer in that suitcase too. But that doesn't get packed til Monday. I did put my pair of fake Crocs in too. I need them as beach shoes.

I packed some other stuff too, my Nook in my computer bag, also my Fitbit charger, and so on.

Anyway, I did that for most of the day. I made out a list of stuff not to forget, too.

Finally at 5:00 I left for my Al-anon meeting in the Bronx. Got a 25 bus pretty fast, also a 50, so I got in with plenty of time. Had my pizza and then went to wait for the meeting.

Very good meeting and we actually had 7 people for the second one. Very good!

Didn't get a ride to the bus stop but made it with plenty of time. Then only had to wait a few minutes in Queens for the 25.

Got home and Teamed the FWiB. While we were talking, one of the two light bulbs in my ceiling light died. I'll have to change it tomorrow or Sunday. I hope it's easier than the last time.

Anyway, Teamed the FWiB almost an hour and a half, then fed the pets and started here.

Oh BTW the turtle food I ordered Wednesday night from Amazon arrived yesterday, no problem.

May be going to the Mets game tomorrow, if [personal profile] mashfanficchick decides ze's not going. Ze will let me know tomorrow.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. Mostly all packed.

3. The ashes fit in the suitcase.

4. Pizza.

5. My meetings and the people there.

6. Bed soon.

First of all, relax! I'm far from being picky, and I can pretty much guarantee that I'll love whatever you decide to create for me. These are nothing but guidelines, for you to take to heart or ignore to your heart's content. Also, hey! You're writing me fic or drawing me art! That's automatically a good reason for me to love you, no matter what. So, please, keep that in mind. Trust me, you can pretty much do no wrong.

I’ve never read any Stephen King

But people always say he’s such a good writer, so lately I’ve been thinking maybe I should…

…but I don’t feel like it any more.

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/stephen-king-defends-graham-platner/

After Politico reported an allegation in July 2026 that Maine's former Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner had raped a woman, author Stephen King said, "Tell you what — if you knew the whole truth about everyone in the Senate and House of Reps, those chambers would be dead empty. Jesus said, 'Let him without sin cast the first stone.'"

The fact that there are already sexual abusers in Congress doesn’t mean it’s good to elect another one.

Calling for someone to drop out of a political race isn’t the same as participating in executing them.

There are translations of John 8:7 that don’t use a gendered pronoun.

I don’t judge people who still support Platner, but if they defend their support publicly, I hope they explain it better than this.

Backrooms (2026) Movie Review

Today I watched the Backrooms movie. The movie not only recreates an eerie uncanny liminal space, but also tells a suspenful psychological horror story.

Clark (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor) is a divorced alchoholic failed architect who feels that he's stuck running an unsucessful cheap furniture store. He attends therapy session with Mary (played by Renate Reinsve), who has her childhood trauma. One day Clark discovered that his store basement was connected to a space, which looked like an abandoned office space made without actually knowing what an office was like in reality. He kept going back there abd became obsessed. After him missing his session and leaving an omnious call, Mary went to his store to look for him and gets trapped there.

The visual design and music were very good. The yellow fluroscent walls, the subtly wrong furnitures, the endless doors, chutes and rooms were uncanny. The music and sound effects was unsettling and enhanced the scenes. I kept my eyes shut during the gory scenes, but luckily there weren't many. I also find the use of found footage very effective.

Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve are really steller. They make the characters feel grounded and sympathetic.  Chiwetel Ejiofor sold me the change of Clark throughout the movie, while Renate Reinsve's restrained performance fits her role well. The supporting cast is good too.

Although I haven't watched the original Youtube series nor the trailer, I find the movie easy to follow, though I'm sure I may have missed the nuance. I really like how it doesn't try to explain away the mystery of the Backrooms, but throwing out more and more questions.

I have just found out the director is only 20. It's really impressive! I look forward to his next work.

The Hallowed Hunt by Lois McMaster Bujold, narrated by Marguerite Gavin
Concluding my reread of the original Five Gods books with the first book I read in that series. Yes, I know that's not the correct order, and in retrospect, I wouldn't recommend it. ("You're reading the third one!?" demanded an exasperated friend who'd spent years trying to talk me into reading The Curse of Chalion.)

Compared to the duology set in Chalion, which I've reread multiple times, I remembered relatively little about this one. Honestly, memory was the scene at the inn with the pregnant sorceress, the polar bear at the funeral, the ending in the sacred forest being confusing, and that I'd been reading it because someone had recommended it as an example of a fic trope when I was trying to get a handle on writing that trope myself. I didn't remember which fic trope, but it turns out it was soul bonding.

I think it benefits from reading them in order because this one somewhat expects you to know how the Five Gods worldbuilding works, and is doing its most interesting stuff by tinkering with it, so I think I was a bit overwhelmed going in cold. It might be a bit of a let down if you just want more of Caz, Ista and the gang, as they're in another country and also not born yet.

Anyway! I really liked it! The hero is a solid Bujold entry in stoic man who believes he's damaged beyond repair but feels the pull to act with honour despite not much of his experience with the world suggesting that's going to work out for him. The heroine would like things to be less stupid, and also not to get raped or murdered, and plans to persist until conditions improve. I felt like her character could've gotten fleshed out and given a bit more to do, but I did like her. There are a lot of vivid side characters who feel like they have their entire own stories while they're not on page, without taking over the narrative. The baddie was somewhat foreseeable (if it walks like a fascist, and talks like a fascist, it's prooooooobably...) but well constructed and convincing.

I did make sense of the big dramatic scene at the end this time, though it didn't quite have the kick of the ending of the first two books. Overall, this one was good, and if you liked the Caz and Ista books, you'll probably like this, but I would read them in order.

Rainbow heart sticker Cards of Grief by Jane Yolen
Grabbed this second hand as I've been meaning to read more of Yolen. I now feel a bit bad writing this not that long after the woman passed away, because it really shouldn't be held up to represent her writing. I think if you publish 500 books, they can't all be bangers?

I started out really enjoying it, and being pleased at how much SF/F in the 1970s and '80s could just be really fricking weird. It's presented as a series of anthropologists reports of first contact with a new planet, recordings of conversations, and trial transcripts, leading to overlapping, out of sequence, and sometimes contradictory versions of events. Which is usually my favourite thing! All the male characters also seemed to be casually bisexual (though not a lot of concern about consent to be found). I don't remember much sex happening between women, but it was still cool to see in a book that came out in 1984.

This got long, so I'm putting the rest and the negativity behind a cut )

So yeah. That sure was a book I read. I'm glad it wasn't the first Yolen I encountered, and I will try again, but wow.

The Once and Future Riot by Joe Sacco
Grabbed this off the library shelf for non-fiction graphic novels while I was looking for something else.

Graphic novel about the author investigating the causes, events and aftermath of a religious riot in rural India. If that's the kind of thing that interests you, this will probably be interesting. I think the author did a good job of trying to pick apart the different strands of events and conflicting narratives to lay out not exactly what happened, then the tensions that lead to it happening, and how the cover up rolled out. Sacco has an eye for how people justify bad actions, and while it's not without judgement, it's certainly with an attempt at empathy. It does feel like that kind of openness and honesty is maybe what will lead to solutions in similar situations, but I also didn't leave with an impression that was happening at all.

Got my laundry

Got up at 10:00 and had breakfast, then put in a small Shipt order of things I need before I leave for the cottage on Tuesday. Had coffee, puttered around while it got here, put it away.

Then I got all my recycling bagged and ready to go, plus got the garbage out of the garbage can. Tied it up. But something was in the garbage that I couldn't stop thinking about. Back a few weeks ago, I mentioned here that I cleaned out a box of stuff I'd had since Oldest Brother had his stroke. And in that box were two spiral notebooks of his. I threw them away, but couldn't stop thinking about them. One is just job and apartment searching stuff I think. The other... I don't know. I'll probably never look, but when it came down to it, I couldn't throw them out.

So I cut the bag open and pulled them out (understand I have very little, if any, wet icky garbage. Most of it is stuff like Keurig pods, popsicle sticks, the paper plates I use to give the cat his Fancy Feast, and other dry detritus, so the notebooks weren't damaged in any way.) I put them in an out of the way spot in the living room. I feel better about it now.

Anyway, then I showered and dressed, and took the recycling out and walked around the block. And then I took the garbage out and walked around the block again.

Then I lay down and played solitaire until 4:00. Then I went and picked up my laundry. I grabbed a small snack of truffle cheese and crackers, and then left to take the bag of the Kid's clothes and the hatbox to [personal profile] mashfanficchick's.

It started to rain when I was waiting for the 44 bus so that was unpleasant. It continued, though not too heavily, until I was at zer place.

We hung out, and put the stuff away in zer closet, and had dinner of General Tsao's chicken from Wegmans. I Teamed the FWiB. Then I called Middle Brother. He is fine, and they are going to get him his new CD player at the end of the month. [personal profile] mashfanficchick researched the CD that he wants replaced.

And I Teamed the FWiB again, and said good night, and then I left and came home by bus. The rain had stopped so that was OK.

I got here just in time to feed the pets, and start here.

And that was the day.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. My recycling is out.

3. I took the notebooks out of the garbage.

4. Clean laundry.

5. The rain wasn't too bad.

6. Middle Brother is well.

Despite sleeping til about 12:30. Got up then, had breakfast and coffee, and called [personal profile] mashfanficchick to ascertain that we weren't doing anything today.

Having ascertained that, I went and got a load of laundry together. I filled the laundry bag, and moved it to the hall, then took a break.

I cleaned the cat pan, and I got the black suitcase out from behind my couch that I intend to use to transport the boxes of ashes of Mom, Dad, and Oldest Brother upstate to finally inter them. The suitcase that was supposed to be empty was very heavy.

Surprise! It was filled with the Kid's clothing that she must have left in it the last time, many years ago, she used that suitcase. I took everything out and put it in a Target bag.

Then I texted the Kid and asked her what she wanted me to do about it. Then I went to take a shower and wash my hair.

She texted me back and we arranged that. Then I took my shower, washed my hair, and got dressed.

I decided that while I was getting this clothing to the Kid, I should her antique hatbox that I've had here for years and years to her too, so I decided to get that out from under the small table beside the couch.

Easier said than done, I had to clear everything off the table, and move the table so I could get it. But I did. Then I replaced the table and all the knick knacks I had on it.

Then I took the laundry down to the laundromat and dropped it off. I came back, and texted RK about him taking care of Oreo and Christie while I was gone. He's our go-to person for that cause he's a vet tech, and really cares.

Then [personal profile] mashfanficchick called and we talked about stuff, the upshot of everything is I'm brnging the bag of clothes and the hatbox over to zer place and we will take it to the storage unit to leave for the Kid when we're both back from upstate.

I took out the bag of dirty kitty litter, and walked around the block. I had originally planned on stopping at J's Confection for a milkshake but I didn't because it was too close to time to Team the FWiB.

Then I Teamed the FWiB. My D&D is cancelled for tonight because the DM is busy so we were able to talk for an hour and a half.

I had dinner after that, and went to the bedroom where I played solitaire til it was pet feeding time.

I fed the pets and started here. Busy day!

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. RK.

3. Clean laundry.

4. Almost time to go upstate.

The Hockey Player

I just watched the Luke Prokop documentary. A high point in which is getting signed by his hometown franchise, Edmonton Oilers, and playing for their AHL team. They signed him knowing he's gay. He's finally getting proper development and feels like he's being taken seriously as a prospect. He's played with the Oilers in preseason games, which means playing with some of the biggest names in hockey.

The coda to all this, which happened after the doc wrapped I assume, is that the Oilers also didn't re-sign him. He's UFA, and currently unsigned. So, the Oilers acquired him and treated him seriously as a prospect for their NHL team, then switched to their new coach Mike Babcock, and then he was not re-signed. Now, we don't know how this played out. Luke might have seen the hiring of Babcock and decided to GTFO, or maybe he feels he has a better chance to move up in a different franchise. But his story is very much an unfinished one and it's a bit strange for this doc to drop while he's on the market and has been for a bit.

Again, we don't know what is up. He might have multiple offers and is deciding. I obviously think he'd be a great fit for Coachella Valley, and hey we just hired staff specifically to develop defencemen! But the doc tries to end on a happy note, when in reality things are deeply unresolved.

I check Luke's Elite Prospects page daily, but if he finally gets a contract somewhere I'll probably hear about it elsewhere first.

Visit to the surgeon

Got up this morning at 10:00 after a rather restless night. Had coffee and then a bowl of cereal, showered and dressed, and then puttered on my phone til 2:00.

At 2:00 [personal profile] mashfanficchick and I took an Uber over to my surgeon (the Uber from zer place was half what the Uber from my place would have been, that's why I stayed over) for my checkup.

It was abut a half hour wait in the waiting room, but once I got in the exam room, not too long. The doctor did what she always does, go over my records, ask a few questions, and examine my breasts. I am happy to say all is well, and once again I don't go back for six months.

Then [personal profile] mashfanficchick and I took the bus to Queens Center mall, and ze went shopping for something to wear to zer father's 80th birthday celebration which is on the 12th.

First though we had a late lunch/early dinner at Applebee's, splitting the "two for $25" deal. We had salad rather than appetizer, and I had the O-M-Cheeseburger. It was delicious.

Then we went to Penny's and looked for clothes. I spotted the $5 clearance rack and got a pair of purple patterned satin shorts. I wanted to use my Penny's card because I was afraid it would be canceled if I didn't use it soon. So I paid using that.

[personal profile] mashfanficchick hadn't found anything ze liked by the time I had to leave to get to my Al-anon meeting in time, so ze walked me to the bus and then went on to Macy's.

I took the bus home, with a bit of excitement at 38th and Main, where the driver said that the loud banging coming from the back had reached the point where he had to call it in the the depot. So I got off there, and switched to another bus that was right behind, and made it home on time.

That was the good part. But the computer, or Zoom, acted up and I had a very hard time getting the meeting to start, I finally did, late. Then it was pretty good.

I Teamed the FWiB after the meeting rather than before obviously. We talked for almost an hour.

Then I fed the pets and started here.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. My checkup was good.

3. The Kid texted me back when I texted her.

4. The rain that started never got bad when I was out in it.

5. Purple patterned shorts for $5.

6. Made it home in time for my meeting.

These are probably going to be brief, as my memory isn't that strong six months later.

Searching for Serafim: The Life and Legacy of Serafim "Joe" Fortes by Ruby Smith Díaz
(Local author, read before she gave a talk for Black History Month.)

Short biography and a poem about a Caribbean Black man working as a lifeguard in Vancouver, BC, in the early 20th century. The records of Serafim Fortes are pretty slight, and almost all from the perspective of white people—who treated him as a sort of mascot, and talked about how great he was despite his race—so Smith Díaz is mostly reading against the grain of the historical record, and speculating lot. I normally do not like history books that include this much speculation, however, Smith Díaz is very clear about when and why she's filling in ideas, and I think it works in this context. It introduced me to Marie-Claire Graham's concept of "speculative archiving" as a way of dealing with gaps in the record created by historical violence, which this book is more or less an example of. I appreciated that Smith Díaz did not shy away from or excuse records of Fortes behaving poorly. Very much worth a read as a local history, and as an example of navigating a fragmented and racist archive.

Rainbow heart sticker Everything Is Fine Here by Iryn Tushabe, narrated by Nneka Okoye
(Canada Reads Longlist, which I wish had been on the shortlist.)

A coming of age novel about a young woman in western Uganda, who discovers that her beloved older sister is a lesbian. One's reaction to that premise might be, "Oh no!" but this novel was not a tragedy about queer bashing, though the setting and my knowledge of Ugandan politics made it a tense read.

(I also felt that my ((at this point rather hazy)) knowledge of Ugandan geography, culture and food helped me a lot, including having been in the same places described in the book. There's a lot of cultural detail and non-English terms dropped in without explanation, so remembering what most things were saved me a lot of looking stuff up.)

But most of the novel is about a teenager trying to figure out both the world and herself, in a family with a lot of internal conflict and pressures. There's a few cases of sixteen-year-olds making poor choices, but for the most part the novel offers its characters a lot of grace. It's about discovering the world can be a lot bigger than you're told it is, and offering and receiving second chances. Really loved this one.

Rainbow heart sticker Witch King by Martha Wells, narrated by Eric Mok
(Reread before getting into the new one.)

I'm really glad I reread this, as I initially rushed through it to find out what happened, and as a result didn't remember several key plot points, which turned out to be essential to the second novel. There are a lot of moving parts!

Basically still love everyone in this band, and appreciate getting a novel about decentralising power, rather than building empires.

Rainbow heart sticker Queen Demon by Martha Wells, narrated by Eric Mok
Really enjoyed this one, also, though it ends in a more obvious cliffhanger than the first one, which stands more or less on its own.

Mostly just like the characters and enjoy spending time with them. It's again nice to see people struggling with the work of consensus building, interspersed with battle scenes, lol. I like Kai slowly coming out of his shell in the first timeline, and how much the characters have changed over the centuries between the flashbacks and present day. It really nicely both shows the long-range consequences, and builds up tension as the plots weave towards each other. Bit bummed out by some of the casualties along the way.

I hope we get the next one soon!

Well, ugh.

At one time, the cellar of the current palace was made up of dank, dim chambers where the palace's slave-servants slept and sometimes worked. When the previous Chara made up his mind to free all the palace slaves, there was much discussion over what to do with the former slave-quarters. The somewhat belated consensus by the palace officials was that these rooms were unfit to live in. There was talk of turning the rooms into storage rooms.

To everyone's amazement, the palace's community of eunuchs came forward and asked that the dank, dim chambers be given over to them. They had never before had a place in the palace that belonged solely to them. Many of them, being recently freed slaves, had lived in the slave-quarters; they considered this their home, one that might finally belong to them, rather than to their slave-masters.

The Chara graciously granted them their new quarters and forbade anyone who was not a half-man from entering the quarters, except by invitation of the eunuchs.

I can testify that the eunuch community has done a marvellous job of redecorating the cellar, so that it is bright and cheerful. One room alone has not been touched: the slaves' punishment room, which remains as a stark reminder of this place's bloody past.

If you are invited to visit the eunuchs' quarters, I strongly advise you to visit the punishment room. My advice grows even stronger if you keep slaves yourselves.

I got up and had breakfast at 6:30, then went back to bed until 11:00. Then I got up again, had coffee, and put in a Shipt order. I got a phone call from my surgeon's office that they needed a referral from my pcp.

So I called my pcp's office and was told the referral they last sent was good until the 11th, so I had to call the surgeon back and tell them that.

While I was waiting for the Shipt order, I showered and dressed. When it arrived, I put it away and then packed for overnight at [personal profile] mashfanficchick's.

Then I fed the pets and took off. It was raining when I left, but not badly.

I took the 44 bus, and when I got off to transfer the rain was stopped. I got on the 46 bus, and when I got off the rain was still stopped. I went to Yaaas Tea for bubble tea, and walked to [personal profile] mashfanficchick's.

I hung out, mostly puttering on my phone, til 7:00 when I Teamed the FWiB. We talked til a bit after 8:30. Then [personal profile] mashfanficchick and I had dinner. We turned on the Mets game, which was very nail biting, the Mets went from losing to winning to tied and finally to narrowly winning. It was fun.

Then we had dessert, I had another root beer float. Since then I've been puttering on my phone again until I started here.

Gratitude List:

3. Got the referral thing straightened out.

4. The rain stopped while I was out (It started again later)

In case you missed my First Doctor era post, here it is.

I finished the Second Doctor's era a few days ago and I've been meaning to gather my thoughts here, but hadn't found the right time.

As of now I can say Two has become my favourite Doctor, which feels a bit crazy to say. Back in the day, when I was into New Who, I kept switching from Nine (my first) to Ten (the reason I started watching the show, since I'd seen clips and gifs out there) when talking about my favourites. It's funny that I love Two so much, then, considering it was Eleven who was the most based on him when it comes to the New Who Doctors. But I digress! Let me tell you why I loved Troughton's Doctor so much. Or at least try, because there are probably more reasons I can't think of right now.
