ok, i am hoping this is considered on topic!
basically i am wondering how to do people here feel about religion and its treatement of women. we are all aware of how society potrays women, encourages us to be lascivious, and yet, still looks down on us when we are. it encourages us to be vain, to spend lots of time on makeup and clothes and so on. toys aimed at little girls follow those lines to more of an extreme as the dolls are so unnatural looking! (fake big lips on those bratz dolls and of course, barby with her silly figure!)
but, i am wondering how do people feel about the religious ideals of how women should dress and behave? to me, its just as bad, because a lot of religious people want women to dress down, to be submissive, to stay home. its the complete opposite end of the balance. society wants us to be prettied up and slutty, the bible wants us to cover up and be seen and not heard. in biblical terms, women are blamed for just about everything (adam and eve) and still we hear that women are tempresses, that it is our fault that men are tempted! (this whole post was inspired by my spying route on the community with the dictator mod and finding this article :
http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?new… its not about religion but it is about morals, and that is usually connected to religious values.)
but i have been told that i should cover up, get to church, become a good christian woman. i have been told being a goth, dressing how i want to, is satantic! i have seen the muslim women all wrapped up, for fear of tempting men, i was told. in religion, women come across as the 'bad guys' the temptresses, and that is considered wrong. in society, women are put forward as being temptresses and that is thought of as being good!
so i am wondering, how do you feel about religion? are any of your religious, how do you feel about the potrayal of women in religion and the demands of some religious people for us to cover up?
(some, not all, i am dealing with those that are hostile towards feminism, want women to 'submit', those that blame women for men being tempted!) because for me, i feel as though religion is responsible for the position of women in society today. thousands of years of women being told they are less than men, not as clever, to blame for the fall of the world (in ancient greece it was pandora and her box, in the old testamtent eve and her apple, and i think it is simplar in other religions as well but i am not an expert) so i am curious but how do religious people balance this with their own invidiuality and desire for women to be treated equal? or is no one here religious?
and does anyone else sometimes feel as though they have no place in this world whatsoever? that we are only allowed to exist in the way that a MAN has told us is ok! be it a religious man, a media type guy, and so on. sometimes i don't feel like i am one of half the population because i don't see anyone telling a man what he can and can't wear and how he should and should not behave. sometimes i feel as though women are still being punished, and blamed for something that other people believe happened thousands of years ago.
