Evidently I'm on hiatus right now, who knew? ;p Yeah, I'll try to un-hiatus at some point *waves hands vaguely into the future* (I'm fine, just busy. Really really busy.)

To tide you over until actual content resumes, would you like to read a story written for me for [livejournal.com profile] help_pakistan? Correct answer: Yes! It's for a song, one that's fairly old-- it's thought to be a variant of one of the Child ballads. (And at some point I'll put actual links in here.) I love the song and I love where [personal profile] snow has taken this story. ETA: The fic would probably make much more sense if you've heard the song or at least read the lyrics. (A lyrics link can be found in the author notes.) /ETA

Fic: Jane Barbour or To Hell With All Your Land
by: favicon Snow // [personal profile] snow // [livejournal.com profile] snowishness
Fandom: John Barbour (Song)
Etc.: General Audiences, No Archive Warnings Apply (no Fish-specific warnings apply either), Jane Barbour/John Barbour, 766 words
Summary: "I would if I could," I say, knowing as I do it that it's not good enough. "But she chose to marry a sailor, and that's what I am." // "Decide what's more important to you, your wife's health or your sailing."
My notes: HELL FUCKING YEAH! Anything else would be spoilery. (I'll try to come up with an actual note when I repost this to my recs comm, but in the meantime, I'm too busy going :D about the final line to say anything else.)

Because I am horribly indecisive sometimes, I ended up giving Snow ten billion songs to choose amongst for her prompt (which I then subdivided into two separate playlists, because I may have been indecisive, but at least I was indecisive in categories!). Would people be interested in seeing those playlists?

So once upon a time (round about a year ago), I decided that I ought to make a comm to revel in the awesomeness that is [A thousand ways to please a husband with Bettina's best recipes]. I created [livejournal.com profile] bettinas_fandom, there was a bit of interest in it, and then it sort of fizzled out as people got caught up by various other things. And I do know that that is in part my fault as the mod, for not having done more to keep up interest (I swear, I have three posts in draft on: (a) historical perspectives and additional resources and references, (b) icons, (c) linkspam of preexisting posts (fannish and not) to the book. I just, um, still haven't finished them?).

So, anyway, I've decided that since evidently it's time for this year's [livejournal.com profile] yuletide that I should move the comm over to DW and see if I can get a fledgling comm together in time for it to be useful for this year's fest. Which is all well and good until I end up chasing myself in circles on if I should keep the comm name as [community profile] bettinas_fandom or if I should change it to [community profile] bettinas_kitchen (this is why I like having co-mods -- so there's someone to smack you upside the head when you're being ridiculous). But since I don't have a co-mod, I figure, why not ask the internet! :)

I was wondering why no-one had commented on this entry and then I realised that not only had I not posted it yet, I hadn't even finished writing it up. Ooopsies. Anyway, here, have an entry.

A few days ago some of my friends were watching a tape of a stand-up comedian (I was curled up against the arm of the couch mostly falling asleep because it had been a long day). I think I got the better end of the deal because I like napping and what little I heard was mostly offensive and not actually funny. But I did catch one small line of his which had potential-- 'wrappers are like clothes for candy'. And so my brain went to the 'how 'bouts writing filthyhotguuuuh candyporn' place. (Evidently all I need to contemplate writing explicit sex is candy?)

And thus I bring you a poll (first person means the poll-taker, second-person means [personal profile] fish_echo):
poll behind the cut-text )

I might have fic fest commitments, I'm just saying. And I might occasionally want to cheat with some other bit of writing. Should I:

A) Meta! (Because goodness knows, the meta-bunnies have been nibbling my brain parsley something fierce lately)

...or...

B) Prompt ficlets! (Which would mean solicitation of new prompts. And the ficlets would likely be, well, drabble-sized without the strict word count.)

...or...

C) Take a nap!

Notice that "(d) one of your other WIPs" isn't on the list because I don't want to suddenly remind my muse of those fics because I'd like to actually abide by this whole 'deadline' thing I've got going on and getting my muse distracted wouldn't be too helpful.

ETA: Poll closed, answer is (C) napping! :)
fish_echo: typewriter, with words 'galley slave to pen and ink' (Writing-Galley slave to pen and ink)
I've got my FFFA fic sitting open (Dear Parker, Yes, I'm finally writing that rappelling scene! Love, Fish) but I've got this idea in my head that I think I might be plotting out, but knowing the POV character would be really helpful...

So! Poll!

Who should be the POV character?

A) Lilo
B) Ianto
C) Captain Jack Harkness
D) Rotating POVs
E) The Death of Rats (would be mostly an impartial 3rd person POV but with occasional SQUEEKs and CHEESE)

ETA: I'm not sure if you are teasing me or if you really want more information, but I did [put up a post where I talked about this bunny]. You should feel free to take the poll without clicking on that link, though :)

I know I had things I wanted to post here but I really can't remember what. So you'll get a random poll instead!

This month [livejournal.com profile] spngenlove is focusing on H/C, which isn't quite my cuppa. So I've decided that [livejournal.com profile] fish_recs'll give some love to other fandoms this month.

Currently in-progress list: Rare/unusual-for-me fandoms.

Possible lists up after that:
  • Star Trek Reboot. Which everyone and their uncle has already recced.

  • Psych. Possibly breaking it down into two lists: Shawn/Gus and other (mostly gen).

  • Sentient!Atlantis. Because I've missed SGA fic!

  • Wincest-I-can-read. Okay, it's SPN but it's not gen. With attendant meta.

  • Harry Potter. Because, Hi, first fandom! It's been a while!

  • Vids. Why not? I've got some lying about that I like....

  • The ever-popular 'other thing that catches my fancy'

Anyone have any preferences?

Running tally (incl both my journals and comments made elsewhere):cut! So you're not influenced when voting. Or because otherwise the entry's too long. Dunno! *hands* )
fish_echo: betta fish (Fandom-Who-Rose&10 looking up)
Since I've got the paid account at DW for a bit I thought I'd do a poll.

One of the things I decided after I [polled fandom] about recs was that I would make a comm to rec things on, since my journal seems to get filled up with posts on various sorts of things. So I set up [livejournal.com profile] fish_recs and proceeded to ignore its existence. I have since imported all of my rec posts to that comm and have occasionally updated or otherwise cleaned up the entries. I'm not finished with that process (so some of the entries are still locked), half because I really hate doing that sort of fiddling detail-work and half because I forget about it. But as in theory I have it up and putting along slowly, so I should post my next rec set there. Which has got me thinking...

Lately I've been wondering if I've put the comm in the right place. I prefer DW but most of my flist seems happy on LJ. Hence, poll!

(note: first person means the poll-taker. Second person means Fish)

Poll goes here! )

Right, that's a long poll and I'm stopping now, really. :P And the comments are open for any further thoughts you have.

And if you like, feel free to send others this way, if you think they might be interested in my recs. Larger sample size => better statistics, bo-yah! Especially for the final question on the poll, I'm especially worried about the quality of my statistics for that section.

I'm not sure if DW allows non-DW users to take polls. It may well allow Open-ID. If you can't take the poll but have thoughts, just leave a comment with your thoughts. (Or something. It's not like I'm running a totalitarian regime here.)
fish_echo: betta fish (pompoms fish)
DW has this 'sponsor a free user' program, where free users get randomly selected for paid account times. And this little fishie is now the surprised recipient of 2 months of paid DW account time. Which means lots of poking around the features that I've been ignoring shall come later.

BUT! And here's where I need *your* help!

ICONS! I CAN HAS 75 ICONS!

So, um, icons I should have? Places I should look for icons? Etc.

Because I'm only going to have them for a short amount of time! And so I should use them and love them and pet them and name them my squishy and sob when they leave me.

Thank you, [personal profile] yvi!
