Author notes: The title is from THE SALT DRESS INSIDE ME by Kim Hyesoon, translated by Don Mee Choi. While this drabble is vaguely inspired by their (public) interactions and pre-/official pairing dynamic (i.e. the flower bouquet), the inferred thoughts are entirely fictional and I didn’t do any “research” past watching some random YouTube videos.
Summary: The (over)compensation of appearances.


Ryujin brings him flowers. The bouquet is massive, beautiful but also heavy, like a manifestation of this space they find themselves in now.

What’s obligation? What’s friendship? What’s for show and what’s real? Sometimes things are both and neither at the same time.

Patji mentioned liking gerberas once. Did Ryujin remember, or did someone remind him? And does it matter?

Sometimes Patji wonders if Ryujin’s determination is because he decided to cut his losses in advance. They’re still circling, trying to make things fit.

But, in the end, isn’t each subsequent choice what matters?

The flowers are beautiful, and real.
