Super Sledges are powered variants of the regular sledgehammer.
Background[edit]
The pre-War sledgehammer was originally used by construction crews for demolition and as a weapon after the war.[Pub 1][Pub 2] Factions such as the Brotherhood of Steel manufactured the supersledge, including a kinetic energy storage device to increase the chance of knockback.[1] Some variants use a rocket propulsion system, others utilized ultralight, strong, and dense materials.[2][Pub 3]
Publications[edit]
“Super Sledgehammers are powered variants of the regular sledgehammer. Older, pre-War designs were outfitted with kinetic storage devices to increase the impact force, while post-War ones mount a small rocket motor within the hammer’s head to accelerate the swing and deliver a heavier blow”— Fallout: The Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook

It's not all about the guns, of course. The melee selection was expanded as well, with a eye toward entertaining builds designed to deliver massive (and painful) physical damage. Some of these weapons were initially intended for purposes other than inflicting harm. The power first and super sledge are prewar hardware originally used by construction crews for demolition. But it certainly didn't take much imagination to find alternative uses for them." - ↑ Fallout: The Roleplaying Game Rulebook p. 117: "Super Sledgehammers are powered variants of the regular sledgehammer.
