Cut the chatter. Focus on the job, or you're gonna end up dead.

Corporal Betsy is a member of the New California Republic Army stationed at Camp McCarran in Fallout: New Vegas.

Background[edit]

Betsy is a sniper who is currently assigned to Alpha Team of the NCR Army's First Recon.[1] She is very focused on her work, telling the Courier that otherwise, they will end up dead.[2][3] She states that her job requires her to head shot individuals on drugs who "doesn't even know that [they are] the bad guy," which effects her conscience.[4][5] The First Recon is led by Lieutenant Gorobets, who has kept the group inside Camp McCarran for six months, manning the towers and sniping nearby Fiends.[6][7][8]

Snipers in the NCR work in pairs, spotting for one another and watching each other's backs, and Betsy's partner is 10 of Spades.[9] She says she likes him because he listens and doesn't hit on her.[10] She lets him wear eyeglasses, calling them his "training shades" when in actuality it is due to his poor eyesight.[11] Betsy volunteered to partner with 10 of Spades when no one else would, due to his lack of experience.[12]

Corporal Betsy struggles with anger and behavioral issues due to trauma she experienced when she was sexually assaulted by one of the Fiend leaders, Cook-Cook.[13][14] Her partner 10 of Spades blames himself, as he was knocked unconscious during the attack.[15][16] Betsy respects her commanding officer, who states that her behavior is inappropriate, but he would prefer she sought treatment instead of punishing her.[17][18]

Betsy is initially reluctant to seek help, refusing to acknowledged that the experience has impacted her or that seeing a doctor would be of any benefit.[19][20] Gorobets mentions that Betsy may not want to look bad in the eyes of the rest of First Recon.[21]

The Courier can convince Betsy that mental trauma is no different than other injuries such as bullet wounds.[22] The Courier can reiterate that several individuals have sought medical help for trauma with positive results, including 10 of Spades, Sergeant Bitter-Root, and Corporal Sterling.[23][24][25] Doctor Usanagi is well-qualified to treat mental trauma and agrees to clear her schedule to assist Betsy.[26][27] Following treatment, Betsy admits that she is feeling better, and she isn't so angry all the time.[28]

Corporal Betsy is a lesbian and will flirt with a female Courier if her Charisma is 7 or greater.[29][30][31][32][33] Possessing the Cherchez La Femme perk will allow the Courier to acknowledge her advances.[34][35][36]

Bugs[edit]

  • PCPC Playstation 3Playstation 3 Xbox 360Xbox 360 Upon moving to Camp Forlorn Hope, the Courier may not be able to talk to Betsy for the quest I Don't Hurt Anymore. This may also affect their interaction with Corporal Sterling and prevent the player from completing Raul's personal quest.
  • Playstation 3Playstation 3 The above may happen if confirmed that Cook-Cook is dead. A possible workaround is to talk to Lieutenant Gorobets.

References[edit]

  1. Courier: "You're a sniper?"
Betsy: "What gave me away? The big gun, the shades, or the attitude?"
    Courier: "The big gun."
Betsy: "Yup. Lot of people make that connection. Big gun. Sniper. Some people don't even need to ask."
    (Corporal Betsy's dialogue)
  2. Betsy: "Cut the chatter. Focus on the job, or you're gonna end up dead."
    (Corporal Betsy's dialogue)
  3. Betsy: "Quit talking! We've got a job to do."
    (Corporal Betsy's dialogue)
  4. Courier: "What do you mean?"
Betsy: "Legion fights to win. And they're smart... hell of a lot smarter than these crazy Fiends. But I don't feel bad about shooting Legion boys. Fiends, on the other hand... sometimes I get some pangs of conscience. Not often. But sometimes."
    (Corporal Betsy's dialogue)
  5. Courier: "First I've heard about conscience in a while."
Betsy: "Some cute little junkie bitch, so fucked-up she doesn't even know that she's the bad guy. And I've got to headshot her. Makes me think. Might just be sex, though. I see some cute little number, and I'd rather get in her pants. So maybe I'm a stone-cold bitch, after all. Yeah, doesn't sound like me at all, right? But it happens."
    (Corporal Betsy's dialogue)
  6. Courier: "Have you seen any serious combat here?"
Betsy: "Not unless you count the Fiends as serious. Gorobets keeps us inside the fence, most of the time. Doesn't matter to me, I just shoot bad guys. Sooner or later, they'll move us out to the Dam, though. That's when the shit gets nasty."
    (Corporal Betsy's dialogue)
  7. Courier: "How long have you been stationed here?"
Corporal Sterling: "Going on six months, now. But I reckon we'll be moving out, soon enough. Can't talk about the details. Til then, we'll man the towers and keep an eye on the Fiends. We've had more than our share of trouble from their direction. Whole things smells of Caesar to me. 'Course, that's just guesswork, but I'd still bet a few caps that he's stirring up the locals against us."
    (Corporal Sterling/Dialogue)
  8. Courier: "What can you tell me about Driver Nephi?"
Gorobets: "Not enough. We've been trying to put a bullet in him for a few weeks. He's strong as a brahmin bull, and he's fast. Seems like he usually runs with a gang of Fiends. Uses them for cover. We haven't been able to get a clean shot at him. Betsy swears she's hit him. Twice. But if she's right, it didn't seem to slow him down."
    (Lieutenant Gorobets/Dialogue)
  9. Courier: "So snipers work in pairs?"
Betsy: "Yeah. We spot for each other, watch each other's backs. Usually works pretty well, unless you get paired up with an asshole. Thing is, there's a lot of assholes in the army. I keep hoping they'll pair me up with some hot blonde, like you see on those old pinups. Shit, I don't even care if she can shoot straight. Can't have everything."
    (Corporal Betsy's dialogue)
  10. Courier: "Who's your partner?"
Betsy: "The little guy. 10 of Spades. I like him because he listens. Doesn't shut up the rest of the time, but when I talk, he listens. Also, he doesn't pull any stupid come-ons, like practically every other horn-dog alpha male on this base. Might be he's just scared of me, though."
    (Corporal Betsy's dialogue)
  11. Courier: "I didn't know that all snipers wear shades."
Betsy: "They don't. Only the good ones do. My partner's got some potential, so I let him wear those goofy glasses. I tell him they're his training shades. He totally buys it. Truth is, his eyes just suck."
    (Corporal Betsy's dialogue)
  12. Courier: "Why do you think you let Betsy down?"
10 of Spades: "She's my g-g-goddamn partner. See, we work in pairs. We spot for each other. W-watch each other's backs. Nobody wanted to w-work with me. They said I was too green. But Betsy volunteered. Shit, you don't even know how big a d-d-deal that is."
    (10 of Spades/Dialogue)
  13. Courier: "Actually, I didn't notice the attitude until just now."
Betsy: "Hah! You're not as dumb as I thought you'd be. We got the same sense of humor. Probably better to walk away while I still like you, though. All kinds of things piss me off. Like just about anything that anybody says."
    (Corporal Betsy's dialogue)
  14. Courier: "What's wrong with Betsy?"
Gorobets: "Cook-Cook, one of the fiends, ambushed her and Ten of Spades. They both managed to escape, but not before Cook-Cook raped her. Betsy's shrugged it off like it was nothing, but her behavior keeps getting worse - always making passes at every woman who wanders by. It's inappropriate for anyone in First Recon to behave that way. I could discipline her, but I'd rather she get medical help."
Courier: "I can talk to Betsy about getting medical help for her trauma, if you want."
Gorobets: "I'd appreciate it. As her CO, I could order her to get help, but I'd have her agree with the idea."
    (Lieutenant Gorobets/Dialogue)
  15. Courier: "I heard about what happened to Corporal Betsy."
10 of Spades: "The LT t-t-told you about that? Shit. Man, that's sh-sh-shit."
    Courier: "Tell me what happened."
10 of Spades: "It was m-my fault. See... I was kn-knocked out when it happened. That b-big guy sneaked up on us. I let B-Betsy down.""
    (10 of Spades/Dialogue)
  16. Courier: "10 of Spades blames himself."
Betsy: "Yeah. Typical. Thing is, that fat pile of shit sneaked up on us from behind and kicked little 10 in the back of the head. Knocked him out cold. Probably meant to kill him. The kid had no idea what happened until he woke up in the infirmary. 10 wants to blame himself, I can't stop him. He'll work it through on his own."
    (Corporal Betsy's dialogue)
  17. Courier: "You should get medical help for your trauma."
Betsy: "The Lieutenant's been talking to you, hasn't he? Look, I don't need a head doctor - I'm First Recon, damn it. You don't see the others crying about every little bruise and scrape, do you?"
    (Corporal Betsy's dialogue)
  18. Betsy: "Gorobets was all right - for a man. Not gonna be the same without him."
    (Corporal Betsy's dialogue)
  19. Courier: "Don't you want some payback?"
Betsy: "What kind of dumbass question is that? Of course I want payback. If I get hold of that fat pile of shit, I'll shove my rifle up his ass a couple hundred times, see how he likes it. Then I'll fire some shells up in there, make sure he doesn't ever forget me. He left me a bunch of souvenirs - I figure I can do the same. So yeah. Payback would be good. Doesn't mean I need to have myself a big long cry."
    (Corporal Betsy's dialogue)
Courier: "You were raped. That's not something you can just shrug off."
Betsy: "Never said it was. But I don't need to talk to any doctors. Especially not the pricks around here. If I was smart, I'd fake a big old breakdown. That'd make everybody happy, and I'd get some leave time. But then I'd be doing what everybody wants, and being the asshole that I am, it just wouldn't feel right. Got to have some integrity."
    (Corporal Betsy's dialogue )
  20. Courier: "I heard you were raped by Cook-cook."
Betsy: "Can't stop talking about that, can they? The Lieutenant actually sat me down and asked if I wanted to talk to a doctor. Wouldn't believe me when I told him to forget it. I mean, if that slab of meat had gotten me pregnant, then maybe I'd want to talk to a doctor."
    (Corporal Betsy's dialogue)
  21. Courier: "I convinced Corporal Betsy to get help from Doctor Usanagi."
Gorobets: "Yes, the others in the squad said you'd come to them about her. It's a start, but let's hope she sticks with her treatment as long as it's necessary. I'm afraid she'll ditch Usanagi early if she feels its taking too long - she won't want to look bad in the eyes of the rest of First Recon. Do me a favor and let Usanagi know Corporal Betsy is coming. I'd like to make sure the medical clinic has time for her."
    (Lieutenant Gorobets/Dialogue)
  22. Courier: "Mental trauma can slow you down or distract you, but it's treatable - just like any bullet wound."
Betsy: "[SUCCEEDED] Just another injury to take care of, huh? Well, when you put it that way... all right. You can tell the Lieutenant I finally caved. There's a Doctor Usanagi who's supposed to be good at this sort of thing."
    (Corporal Betsy's dialogue)
  23. Courier: "10 of Spades says his stuttering got better because of Usanagi."
Betsy: "He got better? If he says so. Anyway, 10 of Spades is a good kid - maybe I ought to listen to him for once. I'm guessing the other two had similar things to say. All right, consider me convinced. I'll go see Usanagi. You can tell the Lieutenant that I caved. And... thanks."
    (Corporal Betsy's dialogue)
  24. Courier: "Bitter-Root admitted that Usanagi was able to help him with his problems."
Betsy: "Bitter-Root actually said that? I can't see him talking about his problems to anybody, much less admitting that someone else actually helped him. I'm guessing the other two had similar things to say. All right, consider me convinced. I'll go see Usanagi. You can tell the Lieutenant that I caved. And... thanks."
    (Corporal Betsy's dialogue)
  25. Courier: "Sterling said that if he'd let his pride get in the way, he wouldn't be in First Recon."
Betsy: "I always wondered about that. First Recon is elite, but the rangers... I can't imagine what it'd be like to lose that kind of status. I'm guessing the other two had similar things to say. All right, consider me convinced. I'll go see Usanagi. You can tell the Lieutenant that I caved. And... thanks."
    (Corporal Betsy's dialogue)
  26. Courier: "Corporal Betsy from First Recon will be coming to you for mental treatment."
Usanagi: "Mental trauma can be just as debilitating as physical injuries. Fortunately, I'm well-qualified in such treatment. I'm assuming you're referring to mental trauma. I'll make time in my schedule."
    (Doctor Usanagi/Dialogue)
  27. Betsy: "You can tell the Lieutenant that I finally caved. I'll... get help. There's a Doctor Usanagi who's supposed to be good at this sort of thing."
    (Corporal Betsy's dialogue)
  28. Betsy: "I've been seeing Usanagi, and things are better. I'm not so angry all the time, you know? And, uh, I'm not trying to jump every woman in camp. Well, not all the time, anyway,"
    (Corporal Betsy's dialogue)
  29. Courier: "Actually, I didn't notice the attitude until just now."
Betsy: "Hah! See, we've even got the same sense of humor. I like a girl who doesn't piss me off after sex."
    (Corporal Betsy's dialogue)
  30. Courier: "Goodbye."
Betsy: "Yeah... I always scare off the hot ones..."
    (Corporal Betsy's dialogue)
  31. Courier: "Goodbye."
Betsy: "You don't have to leave, girl. Better yet, come and find me when I'm off duty."
    (Corporal Betsy's dialogue)
  32. Betsy: "Girl... you are some grade-A poon, anybody ever tell you that?"
    Courier: "Only all the time."
Betsy: "You and me at Gomorrah, rolled up in those silk sheets. I got leave coming up in a bit, so let me know if you'll be around."
    (Corporal Betsy's dialogue)
  33. Betsy: "You keep talking to me, sweetness, and people are gonna think we're an item. Not that I mind."
    (Corporal Betsy's dialogue)
  34. Courier: "How about a date? I like tough women."
Betsy: "Yeah, right. You're sniffing up the wrong skirt. Try me again when you're tall, blonde, and female."
    (Corporal Betsy's dialogue)
  35. Courier: "How about a date? I like tough women."
Betsy: "Thanks for your help with Usanagi and all, but I still like them tall, blonde, and female."
    (Corporal Betsy's dialogue)
  36. Courier: "That's a little forward, don't you think?"
Betsy: "Yeah. So what? I could take a bullet in the skull tomorrow. I haven't got time to take it slow and subtle. I see somebody I like, I go ahead and tell her. That's about the only thing that the horn-dog males get right."
    (Corporal Betsy's dialogue)
  37. Courier: "I thought you should know. Cook-cook is dead."
Betsy: "You killed him? Well, shit. Here I'd dreamed up this whole elaborate revenge fantasy. Didn't really think I'd do it, but as long as the tubby bastard was actually alive, I could pretend like I would. Here. I owe you. Take it and get out of here, before I indulge my inner bitch and spoil the moment."
    (Corporal Betsy's dialogue)
  38. 10 of Spades: "Can't b-b-believe Betsy's gone. S-s-she was a bitch, b-but she was my p-p-partner, you know?"
    (10 of Spades/Dialogue)
  39. Betsy: "Damn that 10 of Spades. Just had to go and get himself killed."
    (Corporal Betsy's dialogue)
