Book Review: The Dead City & The Dark Earth Below

My Amazon review of marthawells' The Dead City & The Dark Earth Below:

The Dead City & the Dark Earth Below is an embarrassment of riches: five full stories of the Three Worlds, chock full of fascinating world and culture-building where we are gracefully clued into the societies, rules, and norms of behavior of these different worlds without any clunky exposition. You don't have to be a shape-shifter like Moon or Jade to live fantastic adventures here, either, which I found delightful. Another thing I found very interesting about Martha Wells' universe is the sentient beings that populate her worlds are not always the highest on the food chain. Life is a daily struggle for survival, yet her characters balance this with family and home and interacting with outsiders with agree-upon rules of polite behavior that cross strata.

It wouldn't be fair for me to pick out my favorite story; I loved them all for different reasons. So I'll just say they are all meaty with great suspense and reveal new aspects of our favorite characters as well as introducing fascinating new ones. And there are some really excellent twists that are terrifically imaginative. Five stars from me, and seriously, how can I get a ticket to the planet of Three Worlds? Or, at least, pre-order the next book?

Oh, and I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the gorgeous cover art, which is just breathtaking in detail.

You guys really made me feel loved. ♥ Fandom has the friendships that make my heart glow.

Especial thanks to fanarts_series and rabidfan for the fannish PREZZIES!

I got multifandom banners and an awesome SGA Sentinel storee, respectively. And em_kellesvig has been laboring at my crocheted birthday present for over a month now and just finished it; I can't wait til it gets here.

I really had the most superb birthday everest of evers. SPY, by the way, is a fantastic film. I highly recommend it. Not only did I not stop laughing during the entire thing, but my brother and his girlfriend and their two young sons found it hilarious too. (Oh, Aldo!) So that's a pretty broad spectrum of people to find it so funny. Go see it right away if you can!

And if you can get flying lessons, I recommend that as well. John Sheppard would approve. :) :) :)

Mr. Robot

Just watched a piece of brilliance called Mr. Robot (the 1 hr, 4 minute pilot episode is available for free right now on iTunes). This was what, I guess, Scorpion or those other hacker-type shows were trying to evoke so ineffectually, but here we have a character who is very obviously neuro-atypical and yet is trying desperately to function within society's constraints (by day) and overcome his depression and limitations. He speaks almost affectionately/wistfully of normal people how nice it must be to be them, and that's why he tries to protect them (the good ones, at least) in his own very illegal and yet satisfying ways.

I don't know where they got the lead actor for this role, but he's just terrific.

And that doesn't even touch on the overarching theme of the Evil Corp he both works for and despises.

A++ recommend and I can't wait for the next episode.

Movie Rec: My Chauffeur

I was talking to my brother, and we agreed films of the 80s and 90s at least seemed to confront sexism head-on whereas nowadays it seems like they want to ignore the fact it exists any longer.

So in that sense, it feels like we've slipped.

I'd like to recommend as an improbable icon in a forgotten comedy classic, Deborah Foreman in My Chauffeur, one of those indy LA 80s films.Collapse )

MINE

Firefly: A Celebration
No, I won't be able to read it 'cause of my eyeballs, but I couldn't resist. I'll be able to look at all the pretty making-of and BTS pictures, at least, and there's fanfic by Jane Espenson in here! ("So she sat and stared and played a game she liked to call 'Kaylee is an electron.'") I can scan it in and read it.

insert from Firefly: A Celebration

It's just all so gorgeous. And not available electronically.
