Vernon

I'm sure most of you have heard by now that Vernon Ingram has passed away. He was 82, and it was unexpected.

I can't think of any specific stories to share about him. All I remember was that he was a vibrant, good-natured man who brought a lot of positive energy to ESG.

I'd like to invite you all to share any stories you have of him in the comments to this post.

blog hopping Spring Break

I'm trying to figure out if travelling by visiting people you've met via blogs, chat rooms, etc. during Spring Break is a common or on-the-rise thing for college students to do.

Anyone know anyone who does this, seen any articles or blogs dedicated to this sort of thing, etc.? Maybe a community here on LJ? Do you even know someone who has or plans to do this?

ESG mp3.com account

Jimmy has created an mp3.com for the ESG community
To quote Jimmy in his e-mail:
"Essentially, it's a "Public Fridge" of music. Anyone can put anything
in, anyone can take anything out, anyone can use it. Be considerate,
and it will be cool and useful. Currently it's got several artists
that I personally mostly like (I don't indorse of their songs, just
the majority)."

If you want to use the account, just go to mp3.com and sign in. If you need the password, e-mail esg-confused@mit.edu, which is also the address used for login. (I don't want to post the password online. This is ESG's music public fridge.)

"Here's how to use it:

To login to mp3.com:

Go to http://my.mp3.com/
Under "Email" put: esg-confused@mit.edu
(E-mail esg-confused for the password)
Click "Sign In"

To play music (my way-- you can come up with your own):
This only works on the Sun machines, as far as I know.

At an Athena prompt, type:
add outland; xmms &
At the mp3.com welcome screen (the one you get after logging in),
Hold down shift and click on the lower "> Play" button
Save the "music" file somewhere. A favorite is "/tmp/music".
Go to xmms; Click on the eject button (bottom row, furthest blue
button to the right)
Find and load the music file (type "/tmp/music" in the bottom box)

To add music:

Go to http://www.mp3.com/
Search for an artist or song you want to add.
Either click the "(+) Add All Tracks to My.MP3" at the top of the
list of songs or the "(+) Add to My.MP3" next to each song. Not
all songs are available for this.
Confirm the addition.

To remove music:

Log in to http://my.mp3.com/
Go to "My Music" (in the yellow bar near the top)
Select the artist of the song
Click on the check box to the left of the song you want to remove
Click "Delete" (in the blue bar above the song list)

Use this power for good and not ill.

- Jimmy"

I will now add about playlists here.
To add a song to a playlist (and creating a playlist):
Once a song has been added to my.mp3, you can go to my.mp3.com and (if you're logged in), click on Singles. To add a song or songs to a playlist, click the check button next to it and then click on "Add to Playlist" above the songs.
You can add the song(s) to an existing playlist, just choose one from the drop down menu.
To create a playlist, simply specify a name instead of choosing one from the menu.

There is currently one playlist, mine.
You can make playlists for whatever you want. I am going to request the convention that if someone makes a playlist under their username (or real name), do not begin adding and removing songs from their playlist. Otherwise, feel free to add or delete as you see fit. (For example, do not expect people to leave alone a playlist called "Rock".)

lizard

Today I ate cookies at my seminar, and then ice cream at cicdo and then pie at grindstone. My tummy says yum.
I also tried to get in contact with an old ESG alum who is at Stanford now! No reply yet, though. Yay networking with people you actually know and like!

What do y'all think ESG money should be spent on? Right now there is money for:
UMG stuff (student mentors taking students out to food and random fun events)
staff/student advising food
CICDO stuff
friday lunch
grindstones
wednesday night dinner
end of term party/picnic
seminar food

On a different note, lizard.
