Calling Tolkien completists!

Kobo and Barnes and Noble are offering electronic editions of many works from the good Professor's hand for $2 USD; The Atlas of Middle Earth is also on sale.

Still here, things are — a lot, at the moment. Love to everyone.

Tasty honey with extras

Friend PM, her spouse and offspring met us at Hierophant Meadery on a happily rainy Friday evening; when we walked in, the adults were well into a tasting flight and B. had a mug of nettle tea. Many hugs were exchanged, as we'd not seen each other since Christmas. There was only one other table occupied, and we had a lively time making joyful "Wait, wait, you have to try this!" noises at one another, then getting up to pull bottles from the shelf. PM bought eight. "They only bring a limited selection to the farmers' markets on the mainland! You can just drive up and get what you want!" "Witches' Spice for Punks" and "Queen of the May" came home with me, with the "Rose Cardamom" and "Ginger Pear" on the holiday prep list.

"Now we need food! Who's still open?" This is an excellent question, as most places at this end of the island shut at 7. Our local pub is open until 9, so back into Langley we went, actually finding parking (in town on a Friday!) and hurrying in to discover that aside from a happy noisy group at the pool table in back, the place was deserted. The owner came out and offered to take our orders — "It's quiet, I've cleaned enough for the moment, introduce me to these folks with you" — rather than the usual walk up to the counter; while it poured outside, we were warm by the fireplace sharing food (and some of PM's whiskey sour, how did she walk out?).

The last place you look

Please to picture me yesterday stomping up the stairs after deciding to have a cleanout in the cutlery drawer -

Remember when I couldn't find my little handforged sugar spoon after the move?

IT WAS WITH THE STEAK KNIVES. *facepalm*

It had slid all the way to the back of the holder.

Why was it with the steak knives? I'm sure I had a logical reason at the time, but it completely eludes me now.

In other news, I just had a lovely chat with my postal carrier - got to see photos of her girls from their camping trip.

A temporary solution

P. bought me a tablet in 2016, which I barely used. I pulled it out and had a "hmmmmm" moment. After checking it over, I installed the B&N Nook app and MoonReader Pro, opened Calibre, and proceeded to transfer my libraries. 310 books later (!), everything was saved to an onboard SD card and backed up two or three times. The card allegedly will hold up to 24,000 books; I yelled "Challenge accepted!" and threw a few more onto my wishlist.

(That assumes that the books are around 1.7MB; I have cookbooks that take up 37MB.)

P. picked up the Pratchett Humble Bundle a couple of months ago; I already had copies of Raising Steam and the complete Tiffany Aching collection, so now all the Discworld is on River's new instantiation, with the exception of The Last Hero. Which is not bad for $25!

An eInk tablet is still very much desired - the field has been narrowed to a Kobo Elipsa 2E and a PocketBook InkPad EO, both of which have multiple notebook styles and use a rechargable capacitive stylus, filling my little Trekkie heart with glee - but for now, an eight-year-old device is taking over for an eleven-year-old one, and I am content.

This is very silly

The owners of our place agreed that the existing washer and dryer had reached the end of their useful lives and bought replacements from Costco during the Presidents' Day sales. They arrived yesterday.

They have wifi.

Please to picture me, literally cackling with laughter and clinging to the kitchen island, as P. attempted to put appliances on the home network. DS promptly started sending .gifs of the HAL9000 and Skynet.

On a rather less amusing note, the laundry room now smells considerably better after removing the old equipment (mildewed gaskets, shudder) and a thorough bleaching of the floors; I am resisting the urge to carry every bit of textiles down there and run it through a cycle. These things are large enough to launder the duvets and dry them after. There is a steam cleaning option. And, again, there is frelling wifi - I got a beep on my phone when the towels were done! Not that I'm not delighted to have new things, but this may be overkill.
