Spiced Wine ~ Fanfiction Is Real Writing.

(Although this is one area of fandom I am not ashamed about. If I love a story, I do want to leave a review, so what I am going to do is see if I can read more, and then leave a review).

Quoting.

This week (January 27-February 2), I am going to make a concerted effort to leave a comment on every fic I read and enjoy. Too often, I read, I smile, and I move on. But these writers deserve better than that. So this week, I will make sure to leave a comment that is two things:

• Positive, no caveats. No “I loved it, but I wish it had ended differently.” No nitpicking grammar or spelling. Only positive.


• Specific. Put into words what I liked about it. A squee is always good, but stating explicitly what I loved is even better.

Whether a little drabble or an epic novel, whether it’s new to me or something I’ve re-read 100 times. I will leave a comment on every single one.

A comment on A03 or LJ, a reblog with my own positive comment added, an ask or a PM. By whatever method, I want my specific, positive thoughts to get straight to the author. Not just mumbling in the tags, not just clicking “like” or “kudos.” (Though those are nice, too.)

C’mon, do it with me! Taking a moment to write the words will make someone’s day. And in doing so, you might find you make your own day, too.

On behalf of authors everywhere, I signal boost this idea and am going to do my best to follow suit.  I always leave kudos on fics that I like, but direct, personal feedback is so so so much more meaningful to receive.  I should leave it more often; I’ve fallen out of the habit.  (Not that I don’t love getting kudos.  I do.  But I love to hear why someone is leaving them.)

I looked forward every day to what the next one would be. There was much appreciation and love. I did accept keiliss challenge to post more on LJ. I generally don't post much, but surely I can find something to say. Or to ask? What's every-one doing fandom-wise?

Last day! I am sad to see this end as it was such fun, and there has been a great atmosphere of love and appreciation.

This is not really a challenge. An encouragement?
I have seen posts on the topic of 'Must review more', and so I say, let's all review more.
I, for instance, don't review much on AO3, or read there, which may be why! but I am going to make a concerted effort. I review on Faerie, and on SWG, but AO3 has not become a reading archive for me, yet.

Most of us are authors so, knowing how much reviews mean to us, we should find no difficulty in leaving reviews -- if we like something of course.  Over the years I have seen many people post on the subject of wanting more reviews, but then admitting they rarely review (even, in a couple of memorable and gobsmacking cases, saying they didn't read any fanfic but their own). I can't really get my head round that mentality, sorry.

Simply put: When we read something we like, let's make sure the author knows it, give them something more than blank silence for the time they spent writing a story, ficlet, drabble etc that gave us pleasure (or maybe in my case, made me want to cry or break something; it is still pleasure in a twisted way!)
Don't we all glow inside when we receive a nice review?  So let's try and give others that 'glow.'  Encouragement is so very important.

In your own space, write a love letter. Write it Fandom in general, to a particular fandom, to a trope, a relationship, a character, or to your flist. Share you love and squee as loud as you want to. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

To the fanfic authors who have opened my eyes, given me courage, taken me on journeys I had not imagined, made me love (and hate) sympathise, rage, and cry.  I did not imagine, when I first found fanfiction, that there would be so much to love. I had wanted the stories you gave me for years. It was as if I had uncovered a treasure chest.  When I first found fanfic in 07, there was still a stigma hanging over it, I found, although not to me, whom had never heard of fanfic. I simply expected truly wonderful stories, and by luck or sheer chance I found them. Many of them are still my favourites, and I go on the journey with new stories all the time.

Do not let any-one ever dim your luster.  Accept that you have talent. You write superbly; you know how to build characters, tell stories, keep me enthralled, and although I am a bookworm, I am not that easy to please. Only a few books ever make it to my 'top shelf' where they fall apart through so much reading. That you have chosen to write fanfic, rather than publishable works is a boon for me, since you are giving me exactly what I want. I cannot now imagine how I went through so many years without your stories. I am continually humbled and delighted by your talent, and love you for using it to write fanfiction. There cannot be enough accolades for you, as far as I am concerned.  I love you, I love your stories. You are wonderful!
