Storm Data Damage Estimates for Tornadoes Prior to 1994

edit

Looking through tornado related pages and tables I've noticed that many of them cite damage totals from the storm events database. For tornadoes prior to 1994, damage listed on the storm events database is the median value of the damage class ($250, $2500, $25000 etc) listed on the original storm data reports. For reasons which I will outline here I do not believe that these midpoint values should be used, and that listed damages in articles should be either the lower end of the range of the damage class or, if available, the specific damage listed in the original storm data reports or other sources.

Many tornadoes, though far from all, have specific damages listed either in their original Storm Data report or in other reports. For example, the storm data report for May 1970 lists the Lubbock Tornado as having caused an estimated $135 million in damage, much lower than the currently listed midpoint of the $50-$500 million damage class. In a more extreme example, sources indicate that the 1953 Worcester tornado caused ~$53 million in damage, but the storm events database again lists the midpoint of $250 million, nearly 5 times the actual estimate. Conversely, the 1979 Wichita Falls tornado was estimated to have caused over $400 million dollars, but using the midpoint reduces this to $250 million. Even when a more specific damage number is not available, using the midpoint estimate suggests an improper amount of confidence in the estimates, which are usually quite broad.

I would suggest that for the cases where only the midpoint value is available, the damage listed should instead be the lower-end of the range from the original storm data damage class ranges, with the words "at least" in front. There should also be a footnote in each page explaining the discrepancy. I know this isn't a problem on all articles and maybe not even most articles, but I have noticed this quite a few times so I'm making this post about it to raise awareness and maybe see what other people think. I agree, NCDC is clear that it is a range of damage estimates, meaning we have to go with the lower end of the range. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 17:34, 11 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Looking for advice on climate section

edit

I've been editing the Ottawa page as part of a good article nomination, and am left with the issue that much of the material in the climate section is largely my own from the past, where in order to avoid sweeping statements, I've summarized/analyzed a primary data source (Environment Canada's normals data). I'm now worried that this is potentially meeting the definition of original research, and doesn't use secondary sourcing. That said, it's hard to find secondary sources that get into the statements currently in that climate section. I figure folks in this Wikiproject probably have advice or best practices for how to structure city climate sections, and I was wondering if anyone would be able to take a glance at what's there and give me your thoughts, either here or on my own talk page. New article, looking for editors

edit

Hello all, I've created the 2026 North American heat wave article recently. I've never made a climate article before so I just wanted to put it out there if any editors here wanted to check my work and help fix the areas where it needs it. Also, as its a current event I expect things to change rapidly so that is needed too. Thanks, 📎 JackFromWisconsin (talk | contribs) 15:40, 1 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

2026 Akçamezra Tornado

edit

Hi everyone,

I have submitted a draft focusing specifically on the single most significant tornado of the May 3rd event in Turkey: the Akçamezra tornado.

Unlike broader outbreak lists, this article focuses on important details like its meteorological parameters such as its path length of 25.9-26.7 km and a diameter of almost 800 m(790 m) backed by ESWD data and field surveys.

I would appreciate it if a reviewer could take a quick look:Draft:2026 Akçamezra Tornado

Thanks! StormL00ver (talk) 19:37, 7 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

I would follow User:EF5/Guide to writing about tornadoes. It looks rather thin for a meteorological event article. ✶Quxyz✶ (talk) 00:02, 8 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Dont worry I will expand it.I just didn't want it to be too long StormL00ver (talk) 02:56, 8 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Also This Tornado article is short too. https://tr.wikipedia.org/wiki/9_Nisan_2012_Maden_hortumu StormL00ver (talk) 03:50, 8 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
WP:OSE argument compounded by the fact that is not even on Enwiki. Trwiki abides by different rules that us. ✶Quxyz✶ (talk) 16:09, 8 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Fair point on WP:OSE, I completely understand. I actually just expanded the draft significantly by adding a detailed aftermath and impact section based on official reports from AFAD and Anadolu Agency, along with updated ESWD data. I'm trying to follow the standards closely, so I'd appreciate it if you could take another look at its current state. StormL00ver (talk) 16:44, 8 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
To be honest, I am not very familiar with the exact rules of tornado article splits. Those were just some easy things I noticed. ✶Quxyz✶ (talk) 17:36, 8 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Update: The ESWD has just updated the preliminary report, noting that the case is currently under active analysis for a potential upgrade to an IF4 rating based on recent ground, drone, and satellite surveys. StormL00ver (talk) 19:21, 8 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Dover tornado article editors

edit

I have created a draft on the Dover-Hennessey F4 from may 3rd 1999, and I was wondering if I could get some editors check my article to see if there's any grammatic errors or anything like that as it's too hard for me to do so myself. If not, it's fine. I could do it myself eventually

Here it is: Draft:1999 Dover-Hennessey tornado, Thanks. Pizza smartguy (talk) 21:05, 11 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

This looks substationally better than the last time I checked in on it, since it was pretty lacking in the tornado summary and the aftermath. With those taken care of it seems here, I think it’s good to go. MarioProtIV (talk/contribs) 23:29, 11 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for letting me know! I worked hard on it. :) Pizza smartguy (talk) 00:06, 12 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Draft for Texas Floods

I have created a draft for the recent floods in central Texas, as it is being covered by multiple major sources and impacting a region hit by flooding a year prior. It is located at Draft:July 2026 Central Texas floods. Chris ☁️(talk - contribs) 22:35, 16 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
