Latin America has several meanings due to modern definitions having different views of the region. Traditionally, Latin America covers Spanish-speaking areas of the Americas while Portuguese is usually recognized as well to include Brazil. Some definitions of Latin America also include Francophone countries and territories for a more literal definition of Latin America, languages derived from Romance-speaking languages. Thus, this would include also French-speaking Haiti and the French overseas territories such as Guadeloupe and Martinique. Even less often, Latin America is used to describe all countries and territories in the Caribbean and Central and South America regardless of the nation's language roots to describe a similar socioeconomic history of the region.
For the purpose of this WikiProject, Latin America is defined as a region of Romance-speaking countries and territories south of the United States. This is done to avoid complicating the term and to stay true to the origins of the region's name. Although Quebec is a French-speaking region of Canada and technically part of the Americas, it is not covered by the WikiProject for geographical reasons. Countries from the Commonwealth Caribbean are also not included due to linguistic reasons, but may be included under WikiProject Caribbean instead.
