This template can be switched to use {{Uploader information}} if a change in the order of the bulleted list is acceptable; I've drafted a new version of the template at Template:Non-free album cover/sandbox. Yes, I know I can edit this template myself, but I'd like at least one other person agreeing. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 11:09, 29 January 2020 (UTC)
- @Jo-Jo Eumerus: looks good to me, but what are the advantages? I'm not too keen of the box within a box format, but this has nothing to do with your proposal — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:28, 29 January 2020 (UTC)
- Can I suggest that this is discussed somewhere centrally, rather than on a dozen separate edit requests? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:30, 29 January 2020 (UTC)
- @MSGJ:The most important one I see is that using a single standard template makes it easier to apply mass changes should they be needed, and to construct new ones if they are needed. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 12:32, 29 January 2020 (UTC)
- I dunno, where are such under-the-hood changes that change template code but not really their appearance normally discussed? Template talk:Uploader information has far too few watchers for a centralized discussion. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 13:30, 29 January 2020 (UTC)
- Personally I am happy for you to proceed Jo-Jo. If the box within a box can be eliminated at the same time, then so much the better — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 14:20, 29 January 2020 (UTC)
- MSGJ, that just requires moving everything from
|below=outside of the {{Imbox}}. --Gonnym (talk) 15:38, 29 January 2020 (UTC)- There is now a discussion here. Regarding changing the box, that's a separate question IMO. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 14:02, 30 January 2020 (UTC)

@Jo-Jo Eumerus: I see no opposition to your plan. Do you plan to make these changes yourself? I have disabled the request. If for some reason you want someone else to copy the sandbox over, please reactivate — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 14:19, 2 February 2020 (UTC)
- I've goen ahead and implemented the changes on the other templates as well. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 14:32, 2 February 2020 (UTC)

Requesting to change the following from:
| [[Category:Album covers|{{PAGENAME}}]] to | [[Category:{{Resolve category redirect|{{{1|Album covers}}}}}]]
This would allow the template to diffuse the parent category Category:Album covers with relevant subcats where applicable, as sought by the cat's description. Trailblazer101 (talk) 19:59, 3 March 2025 (UTC)

Willing to be corrected, but shouldn't Category:Album covers be removed, as that is a reader-navigation/info category and this is a copyright template about the legality of a given image. I don't think that other copyright templates are done like this. {{Non-free book cover}} is not in Category:Book covers and so on. Herostratus (talk) 22:56, 20 May 2026 (UTC)
I would agree that files which are tagged with this notice should not be sorted to the Album covers category. It should be removed from the documentation, although I'm not sure about its usage in this template as the default for the unnamed parameter,P.I. Ellsworth , ed. – welcome! – 06:40, 21 May 2026 (UTC) Edited 08:48, 27 May 2026 (UTC)|1=.- The more I think about this, the documentation just adds this template to Category:Album covers. It must be being the default of the
|1=parameter that sorts the image files to Album covers. So apparently that is what needs to be changed, as well as removing the category from the /doc page.P.I. Ellsworth , ed. – welcome! – 11:43, 21 May 2026 (UTC) Edited 08:48, 27 May 2026 (UTC)- Ah. Well, can this be done?
- FWIW and BTW, I intend to nominate all of all of the subcats (some thousand) with copywrit images, and ditto for all of the images of Category:Album covers, to being changed from user-visible to invisible (except to mods for maintenance), based on the following points:
- We, and particularly the Foundation, are very vigilant about copyright, with a few narrow fair-use exceptions.
- One fair use exception is for album covers, and only one use of the image is allowed -- in the article about that album, and only at the top for purposes "visual identification".
- But by having user-visible categories, we are being like "You know those album covers we let you see only in one narrow context, as an exception to our usual rules? Well here is say Category:Arctic Monkeys album covers and with the album names and urls laid out for you so you can easily browse thru these copyrighted images, out of context, to your heart's content."
- And I did nominate one subcat (I forget which) for this operation on these grounds, and it was accepted, because of course it was.
- Not sure if this impacts this conversation, but just saying. (I might not get to this for a long while, and if nuke Tehran (seems likely) maybe never. Herostratus (talk) 18:44, 26 May 2026 (UTC)
- I just don't know enough about copyright to be helpful in this context. From my ignorant POV, even non-free album covers are, after all, album covers, so I can understand why an editor has at some point sorted these files to Category:Album covers or to some subcategory thereof, such as the Film soundtrack album covers category, depending on whether or not the
|1=parameter is used. (example is at File:Jailhouse.JPG) Bottom line is, I'm just not sure if these files should be removed from their present categories. P.I. Ellsworth , ed. – welcome! – 08:48, 27 May 2026 (UTC)
