A GA from 2009. My main problem for this isn't sourcing (though there is the occasional uncited sentence) but rather it's lack of updates. Most sections, aside from history, end off at 2010 max, making some of the article outdated in way. The history section also has some weird sentences like
- "The Second Intifada was a major gamechanger in Gaza, too.[citation needed]" (Game changer?)
- "A tower block was bombed in the 2021 Israel–Palestine crisis.[72]" (importance?)
This could probably be easily fixed however. Onegreatjoke (talk) 17:50, 7 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Onegreatjoke: Removed some unsourced statements, which were about the Strip in general, not the City specifically. Will go through the entire article soon and also attempt to update it for developments in the last 12 years. Al Ameer (talk) 03:04, 9 January 2023 (UTC)
- Al Ameer son, do you intend to edit this article more? ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 01:31, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
- @AirshipJungleman29: Yes, other than some cleaning and c/e, I intend to update it. Requesting 2 weeks for this. —Al Ameer (talk) 01:44, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
- Two weeks should not be a problem. Thanks for working on it :). —Femke 🐦 (talk) 16:15, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Al Ameer son: can you give us an update? Very happy to give you another few days to start the work: articles that are actively being worked on can stay open, even if the work is slow. Otherwise, we'll likely move to delist (and hopefully get is back as a GAN later). —Femke 🐦 (talk) 08:46, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
- @Femke: Being that the main issues raised here have been updating the article, this can be done within a week or so. The problem had been finding sources, but I believe the Pal census stats will cover a good portion of this information. My apologies for the slow start. Al Ameer (talk) 14:34, 11 February 2023 (UTC)

First photo
editAs notable as Gaza's recent troubles are, surely there is a more representative image of the city than a very recent bombed out one. I can understand someone's reason for doing so, I'm just not sure I've ever seen that before, or that it is altogether appropriate. Mercster (talk) 08:19, 8 April 2026 (UTC)
- I don't see why an older image would be "more representative" given it would not in the slightest portray how the city looks today. ~2026-26050-68 (talk) 05:19, 30 April 2026 (UTC)
- Wikipedia usually uses the best pictures of cities, not the most representative ones. Gaza is not the only place in the world where there is war and I don't see such pictures on any other pages. I don't see bombed pictures in infobox of Kyiv or Khartoum articles. Rutdam (talk) 07:13, 30 June 2026 (UTC)
- There is a mixture of images now. They represent the state of the city. The state of the city includes the effects of Israeli military action. Other articles are not relevant to consensus-based decisions here at this article. Sean.hoyland (talk) 08:02, 30 June 2026 (UTC)
- The standarts operating in overall on Wikipedia are quite relevant. What infobox is usually used for on all other Wikipedia pages is also very relevant. Wikipedia usually uses the best pictures of the cities, not the most recent or representative ones. "The state of the city includes the effects of Israeli military action." Yeah sure, no one is denying that, but the state of Kyiv currently also includes the effects of Russian military actions, and the state of Khartoum also includes the effects of Sudanese Civil War and Darfur genocide, yet I don't see pictures there showing war-torn cities. I don't see why Gaza page should deviate from these, and if it should, it needs to be established specifically why Gaza should serve as an exception. I don't see a reason to deviate from long-established site-wide Wikipedia consensus. Rutdam (talk) 15:09, 30 June 2026 (UTC)

Update "Universities" section?
editI think it would be good for the universities section to be updated, given all four listed have been bombed severely and are no longer functional. ~2026-26050-68 (talk) 05:16, 30 April 2026 (UTC)

Misrepresented etymology
editThe quote Based on the city's Hebrew name, עַזָּה ʿAzzā, a common folk etymology insists the name stems from the Semitic root ע-ז-ז ʿayin-zayin-zayin, from which words related to strength and fierceness are derived,[15] but this is unlikely
is a misinterpretation and poor understanding of Hebrew's history. The letter ע used to represent two phonemes, much like the Arabic ع and غ, the latter was lost and merged with the former. That explains why many loanwards using γ were with ע. --Esperfulmo (talk) 22:45, 15 June 2026 (UTC)
RE: City Tense, Damage to city infrastructure
editI understand the contentious nature of this article, but I after searching through this talk sections and its archives, I have yet to receive a satisfactory clarification.
This city has been severely bombed and damaged. Given how a very large majority of the residents have been evacuated and how a large portion of this city has been destroyed, should the general tense of the article be changed to reflect this? I would also like to note how a user mentioned how some sections of this article ought to be updates more thoroughly to reflect the damage done to this city. As this is a contentious topic, I was wondering in what manner we should treat the damage in the context of this article. Thought 1915 (talk) 22:10, 1 July 2026 (UTC)
