editFrom Proto-Somaloid *bice, from Proto-Lowland East Cushitic *bikee- ("water"),[1] perhaps an old borrowing from Southern Nilotic, compare Nandi beek (“water”).[2]
Cognate with Maay biyé, Ashraaf bish, Aweer bii, Rendille biche, Jiiddu behé, Baiso beke, Arbore biče, Daasanach bie, El Molo pice, Oromo bishaan, Konso pishaa, Bussa pishe.
