Usage notes

• The neuter gender predominates in northwest and middle-west Germany, whereas the masculine gender predominates in Bavaria, Austria, Switzerland, and South Tyrol. Eastern and south-western Germany vary, as do individual speakers elsewhere. In case of variation there is often a tendency to prefer the neuter for the material, and the masculine for the countable senses.
