Internationalism, based on Rwanda-Rundi Burundi (Burundi), a class 14 proper noun in the Kirundi variety of Rwanda-Rundi. The name is conventionally analysed as the class-14 prefix bu- and the stem -rundi, approximately “land of the Rundi people”; the deeper origin of the stem is uncertain.

Parallel international adaptations include Norwegian Nynorsk Burundi, Danish Burundi, Swedish Burundi, German Burundi, Dutch Burundi and English Burundi.
