optimus prime is not amused

swamped with work a few days before a very important flight. incredibly stressed.

watching Primer led me to believe that TV (not american tv per se, as i doofusly said to the talented sister-thing - who for the record understood the events much more and faster than i did. then again, she appreciated donnie darko more than i did, so she has a history of this) has dulled my brain.

i could BARELY follow the story and am not at all comforted by the knowledge that the film isn't supposed to be fully understood by the viewer. yes i googled it up after watching, and some of the things made sense... but as the sister-thing has explained most of it to me already, there really wasn't much else to find out.

anyway, Primer is a damn good movie. i wasn't disappointed at all that i got it, and i'm very easily disappointed these days. everyone into intelligent indie movies should see.

also, The Hunt for Gollum was rather impressive. i'm glad for all the hype, this was really well-made for an independent production. i suppose it's proof that sheer love for a story can make you do great fanart fanfics things with it, even with limited resources.

hmm... i think i'd like to be on an indie scifi oldies kick. being deprived of star trek is what probably does this to me :/ i want to watch rene laloux's films the next time i have time.

adam lambert fans should see this video of adam's youngest fan. she's 15 months old and just about the most adorable fangirl ever~

speaking of adam, the talented sister-thing led me to a forum containing my quote of the week:

Thank you, PTB. If your hard work pays off with an Adam win, I will continue to spend my money on your stupid show that makes me care beyond all rational thinking.

kurama also ponders...

lj-cuts make it harder for me to search through my own damn journal, so

just some news bits, mostly local, before i actually wake up.

  • there's this volunteer writing project calling for short stories in filipino, and philippines-based illustrators. the deadline of the first wave of stories is apparently set on february 7 (so close, bb), but if still interested, click here for the details. you have to email the contact person directly.

  • my sister forwarded to me the official list of 2009 oscar nominees. guess what? ploning isn't in it. neither is repo :(

  • pacquiao-hatton match called off. tell me it's just bad negotiations? because the fangirl in me refuses to accept that pacquiao really doesn't want to fight hatton "for reasons known only to himself."

  • three more opportunities for local writers:

  • i just spent the last 15 minutes looking for a previous lj entry about the time i applied for a job at intel in a techno park in cavite. i hate my own words sometimes, have i ever told anyone that? i also hate my minimalist tagging system. simply looking through my lame tag "life" got me passing by a hell of a lot of entries i didn't really want to encounter again until i'm old and unrepentant. these things are going to be around to haunt me FOREVER because i can't let go.

anyway, i was all set to work as a technical writer there. if i had taken the job, i would have been one of the 1,500 laid off as intel shuts down its philippine operations. then again, i could have been transferred to an offshore unit and i could probably be living it up in singapore or the US now XD (sorry for making this national tragedy all about me.)

  • a few mornings back, eclair texted me something curious: while in the cab, she was listening to a funny song where the lyrics of the classic stoner song laklak were set to the tune of the classic ballad lumayo ka man. we obsessed over it for a while, then clair finally found a clip of the song itself. it's over here:

    [ Moy Moy Palaboy - Laklak ]

visit the artists' official website too. they're coming out with an album soon!

  • in keeping with the government's efforts to revive old mines, the mining operations at biak-na-bato have resumed, completely bypassing the activist groups that got it halted in the first place.

the PCIJ has a series of writeups about the philippine mining industry, well worth reading: A Mess of Mines.

  • not just for pinoys, and always good to know: some fitness myths busted

  • i didn't know someecards already made inauguration greetings XD this one's my favorite:

yoshitaka amano lady

no reason to lock this

so today's meetup was cancelled due to storm*, and i vanished on everybody, online and on text. my apologies. the day did not turn out to be as restful as i thought it would be. although things appear to have settled down some...

still sad that i wasn't able to meet up with friends, and bummed about losing so many GB of star trek and devil lady episodes >< i can only hope my fail does not last much longer.

i have yet to decide if it's harder getting one's thoughts together for online conversation now that i'm old and ineloquent, or if trying to piece together a decent verbal reply to anything is simply difficult if a thousand different things demand your attention. I WILL NEVER BE A WRITER-MOTHER. i'm not built for it. i do not have the required multitasking abilities.

and that is probably the last word on everything.

* - parents tell me that another storm's on the way. still need to read up on that. it might be that they just like to screw with my zen :E

edit: sep 26's kikomachine strip made me laugh XD can't seem to take a decent photo of it, and can't find archives online, so i'll just transcribe it here.

just uh. imagine two nondescript robots facing each other and conducting the following conversation verbatim. Collapse )

for anyone who needs the lulz

a few minor deadlines down. i celebrate by posting happystuff!

most of this is in filipino, but i like to imagine there's enough english in here to amuse everyone er, somehow.

TEN QUOTABLE QUOTES:

1. Better late than pregnant.
2. Pag may tiyaga, good luck.
3. Aanhin pa ang damo, kabayo ba ako??
4. Pag binato ka ng bato, kawawa ka naman.
5. Kung me isinuksok, me mabubuntis.
6. It is better to give, much better to receive.
7. Cleanliness is next to Godliness, oiliness is next to blemishes.
8. Ang taong naglalakad nang matulin, pawisin.
9. Pagkahaba-haba man daw ng prusisyon, mauubos din ang kandila.
10. Honesty is such a lonely word.

...

(gets shot)

okay i swear this one is funnier. this is an email that eclair forwarded to me. it's the return of The Sexiest Girl of DM. or well... someone almost exactly like her.

even if you're not filipino, tell me if this makes sense? i'd love to know if the humor gets across to non-filipino speakers. i remember a friend once remarked she was surprised at the amount of english that's used in our day-to-day conversations.
