How to sync Context across AI Assistants (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity...) in your browser

Most people today use more than one AI assistant such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity. But none of them share context.

You end up repeating the same stuff, pasting long prompts or losing track of what you even discussed earlier.

Today, we will understand why existing AI tools fall short and how the OpenMemory Chrome extension solves this problem. We will cover the architecture, core flow, code overview, useful features, privacy model and some practical use cases.

This will help you sync the chaos of working with multiple AI assistants.

1. The problem of existing AI assistants.

If you have ever switched between ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Perplexity, Grok or any other AI assistant, you know the real pain: every assistant lives in its own silo. No shared context. No memory.

Using multiple AI tools feels like having a team of brilliant coworkers, who just refuse to talk to each other.

It's inefficient. It's messy. It's fragmented.

1. Context is Fragmented

Every AI session starts from zero. Your preferences, previous chats or even the files you uploaded, none of them carries over.

You might tell ChatGPT something in the morning, switch to Claude in the afternoon and have to re-explain everything from scratch.

Copy-pasting can work in most situations but it’s not easier when your context is spread across five tabs and multiple conversations.

 

2. Limited context windows

Yes, some assistants “remember” the last few messages. But token limits mean long threads or documents get cut off.

Important details are just gone. Follow-ups fall apart.

 

3. Fragile prompt chains

Trying to get AI assistants to handle multi-step tasks by let’s say calling external APIs, you build a weak chain of prompts. One wrong field in a JSON blob or even a small tweak in the API spec and the whole thing collapses.

Instead of executing the task, your assistant starts hallucinating and debugging becomes guesswork.

 

4. Vendor lock‑in

Designing your prompts for GPT‑4? Cool. But you will need to rewrite function descriptions, system prompts and expected outputs from scratch, if you ever switch to other assistants like Claude or Perplexity.

It’s not such a big issue but there is no such universal solution. And that means constant rework.


2. How OpenMemory Chrome extension solve it?

Mem0 recently launched an OpenMemory chrome extension that adds a universal “memory layer” to your favorite AI assistants, so you never have to repeat yourself.

It transparently captures, retrieves and injects “contextual memories” in real time, no matter which LLM assistant you are using.

Whether you are chatting with ChatGPT, Grok, DeepSeek, Claude, Replit, Gemini or Perplexity, it works behind the scenes to solve the problems we discussed in the first section.

You can install the chrome extension for completely free on the chrome web store. It’s open source with 450+ stars on GitHub.

🔁 How it works (the basic flow)

Here’s the core flow in action:

1) Install the extension → click the toolbar icon → sign in via Google (stores your API key/access token in Chrome storage).

2) Once signed in, you can click the icon (or use the shortcut Ctrl + M) which injects a collapsible sidebar into the current page (on all URLs), so you can access your memories wherever you are.

3) The sidebar UI fetches your memories using (GET /v1/memories), lets you add (POST /v1/memories) and displays relevant ones on the client side.

4) This is how Injecting context into chats works. On supported AI sites (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Grok, Deepseek, Replit, Gemini), a content script listens for your Mem0 trigger, then calls the Mem0 search API (POST /v1/memories/search) to pull back relevant snippets.

5) Retrieved memories are prepended into your chat input as a helper note so the AI knows your context, then (optionally) auto‑sends the prompt for you. You will get the option to delete a memory from this popup (after clicking three dots).

6) After sending, your full chat message history is asynchronously posted back to Mem0 using (POST /v1/memories) with infer=true, so your latest exchanges become future memories.

7) Every toggle/add/edit/delete/logout action fires a lightweight event (POST /v1/extension/) for usage analytics, helping improve the extension over time.

8) From the sidebar’s dot menu you can instantly open your full Mem0 web dashboard in a new tab for deeper memory management. It will be available at app.mem0.ai/dashboard/user/chrome-extension-user.


3. All the useful features.

Here are the features with screenshots to help you understand.

  • The sidebar UI helps you manage your memories. Each memory shows its text and category tags. Also provides one‑click copy or view controls right in the list.

  • You can also find relevant memories from the sidebar in real time and get the total number of memories till now.

  • You can click the Open Dashboard button to open your full Mem0 web dashboard in a new tab for deeper memory management. You can also edit and delete the memories from this dashboard.

  • The most useful feature is One-Click Sync which helps you sync your ChatGPT memories in bulk into Mem0. So all your existing memories can be re-used to improve your experience.

4. Architecture and code overview.

At a high level, the extension follows the Chrome Manifest V3 model. All the wiring between the UI, background logic and content scripts is declared in manifest.json.

⚡ The background.js runs as an MV3 service worker. It listens for the toolbar click, initializes defaults on install and opens the dashboard when requested.

⚡ For each supported AI chat site, there is a site‑specific content.js under its folder. They all follow a similar pattern:

  • Inject an Add related memories button into the site's chat UI.
  • Observe DOM changes to re‑inject the button when the chat interface updates
  • Capture the current user message, call the Mem0 API to search for relevant memories and inject those memories into the chat prompt before sending
  • Asynchronously send the new message plus context back to Mem0 as a distilled memory

For example, the ChatGPT integrator (chatgpt/content.js) begins like this:

The same flow is repeated/adapted in: claude/content.js, perplexity/content.js, mem0/content.js, grok/content.js, deepseek/content.js.

⚡ Popup (popup.js) handles the “Sign in with Google” flow for authentication. It prompts the user to sign in, stores their userId, then redirects to the Mem0 web app.

⚡ Sidebar Dashboard (sidebar.js) provides a universal sidebar that is injected into all pages (). It provides a full memory dashboard where anyone can:

  • View and search memories
  • Toggle relevant memories on/off
  • Open the full Mem0 web dashboard
  • Logout

5. Privacy and data security.

When it comes to LLM apps, privacy is always a concern. But Mem0 is designed so you stay in 100% control of your personal data.

✅ Chrome Manifest V3 brings a stricter security model (no remote code, service‐worker background, default CSP).

✅ All sensitive user credentials (apiKey, access_token, userId, user preferences) are stored using chrome.storage.sync, which is encrypted at rest (and can sync across devices if the user opts in). No credentials are ever logged to the console, nor sent to any third party.

✅ The sign‑in flow (popup.js) sets these values and never sends them to any domain except via HTTPS when calling Mem0’s API (https://api.mem0.ai/* & https://app.mem0.ai/).

✅ Mem0 injects logic only on known AI assistant domains (and on all pages for the sidebar UI). This ensures it can’t sniff arbitrary pages unless the user explicitly toggles its UI.

✅ No page content is exfiltrated. The sidebar’s sole purpose is a dashboard showing your own memories (fetched from api.mem0.ai).

✅ Each assistant’s content script (such as chatgpt/content.js) only:

  • Reads your last few user/assistant messages.
  • Sends those messages (plus your current prompt) to Mem0’s search API.
  • Injects the returned “memories” back into the chat input as context.
  • Optionally posts the conversation data to Mem0’s memories API (to store new memories).

The extension does not embed any third‑party analytics or trackers. Your data is completely safe thanks to best practices.


6. Practical use cases with examples.

Once you are familiar with the Chrome extension, you can realize it can be used anywhere you want an AI to remember something across interactions. Here are a couple of practical use cases:

✅ Developer notes and capturing snippets for future reuse

We as developers copy-paste code to understand, learn and find a solution all the time. The thing we don’t realize, we sometimes repeat the same thing over and over.

Let’s say you copy long code snippets into ChatGPT for explanation. In subsequent follow‑up prompts, you want those snippets to reappear automatically (without keeping them in your clipboard).

Technical flow can be:

  • On ChatGPT, just hit Ctrl + M (or click the toolbar icon). Type your prompt text → paste your code snippet → chatgpt/content.js intercepts the submit → asynchronously post back to Mem0 using → POST /v1/memories.

  • Type your question → press Enter as usual → extension prepends the relevant past snippet(s) as a helper note (so ChatGPT immediately knows your project context).

  • After ChatGPT replies → it automatically calls POST /v1/memories with infer=true, so this conversation becomes a future memory.

 

✅ Cross Assistant research & brainstorming

We can all agree that every AI assistant has specific strengths such as:

  • ChatGPT for general-purpose reasoning

  • Perplexity for research (pulling verified sources)

  • Claude for long-context understanding (ideal for drafting)

  • Grok for real-time trend insights, especially around X (Twitter) content.

Let’s say you are writing about any technical stuff.

  • You start by researching on Perplexity, critical stats and snippets are saved via Mem0 for later use.

  • Now you switch to Claude for drafting. As you begin typing, Mem0 automatically injects the research notes from Perplexity into your prompt so it has full context.

  • You can try to refine the tone/snippets using ChatGPT. Again, no repetition → your original outline + Claude draft is prepended by Mem0 to help GPT build on prior work.

  • Finally, if you are going to create a thread (🧵) on X. You can ask Grok for any trending headlines or Twitter angles to tie it all together.

Of course, most people won’t use more than three assistants at once, still this example shows how the OpenMemory Chrome extension can make your workflow so much better.


No more copy-pasting chats or reminding your AI what you just said.

pretty cool seeing someone actually fixing my context headaches, tbh makes me wonder though - you think folks will stick with something like this for the long haul or just bounce around to new tools all the time?

I think people will stick with this especially because the extension is free & open source. It’s built for the community and already supports major AI assistants (with more coming soon).. so I’m sure this will be useful.
