Last month, I rambled on about the 1944 Dr. Christian tie-in novel and speculated recklessly that the largely anthology-style contents were salvaged from the cutting room floor of previous seasons of the show. Having since dug into it further, I now need to give the author both more and less credit: it looks like they were lifted wholesale from 1943 episodes.
This hadn't pinged for me previously because the recordings of the entire 1943 season are apparently lost to the sands of time. But having now looked through a full catalogue, the episode titles make it clear the major stories all appeared on the show. There's even one named after the troubled orphan whose subplot was the iddy highlight of the novel for me. And while I'm sure he was written off by the end of the episode like all of Dr. Christian's wards, it's still going to drive me a little crazy not to listen to it - especially because I think I may be working on some fic remixing the events of the novel. I can't even find out who voiced the kid!
All of which makes me realize how happily spoiled I've become in the age of digital streaming and downloads. In the grand scheme of fandom, I'm a Johnny-come-lately. I didn't start sharing fanfic until the internet really took off. But I nonetheless cut my teeth in the days when it was common not to be able to access the entirety of something you were fannish about. I still remember swapping VHS bootlegs by mail, trading episodes of Due South or Once a Thief for episodes of The Sentinel or The Magnificent Seven, or movies like The Pillow Book and Priest. Even then, there were definite gaps in my knowledge of a canon that I had to fill from synopses and secondhand fandom discussion.
Did anyone else ever write for canons they couldn't fully access, or go to some lengths to get their hands on something obscure?
(None of the more obvious university special collections are coming through for me, so I think in this case I might actually end up writing to CBS on the off-chance there's any information in their archives they can share with me.)

Dreaming vs. Tumbling
Dec. 4th, 2018 02:59 pmAs folks may know, Tumblr is banning a variety of adult content on their platform and, to put it mildly, are not implementing the change very well. Think Strikethrough with even worse algorithms, more arbitrary guidelines, and a lot more people who just want to get fans of their rival ships kicked off the site. I've been uncomfortable with significant parts of the fannish culture over there for a while, but I stayed largely because of the availability of fanart of all ratings. With that going, I'll be closing my account sometime this week.
( Long Story Short )
I really wish this wasn't happening and that no one was losing a fannish home, a source of revenue for their original art, or a place where they could curate and discuss adult material side by side with other interests. Just speaking for myself, though, I think opting out of fast fandom and the more public nature of Tumblr might be good for me. I'll also be looking into folding most of my various AO3 pseuds into my main account (for ease of upkeep and because all of the really concerning attention I've gotten has pretty much started and ended through Tumblr asks and call-out posts), as well as cleaning up my tags over here and maybe backdating some cross-posts.

HP Fanfic Fan Poll Awards
Apr. 7th, 2012 09:20 amFather to the Man won "Most Unique Story Plot/Twist" at
hpfanficfanpoll, which is just tremendous. Thank you to everyone who voted for it!
I'm even happier, however, to see that very nearly everything I nominated ended up placing. :-D

HP Friendship + Young Fandoms
Apr. 1st, 2012 05:56 pmJust a reminder that
hp_friendship is now open for claims. There are still a lot of great prompts left (including some of my own), so go have a look if you're interested in writing some friend-fic.
Also, there's a post currently going around the Avatar fandom in which everyone's discussing how old—or rather, young—they were when the first series came aired. So far the answers range from seven to thirteen. *laughs* I'm in your fandom, being old (and referencing a meme you might too young to remember).

Fanfic.me (or, Fanlib redux)
Oct. 2nd, 2011 08:21 amIt's that time of year again, when we have an enterprising non-fannish individual who doesn't seem to have done much research about fandom cack-handedly trying to turn fanfiction into a cash cow.
watersword provides some excellent sleuthing here.
unjapanologist also has some great analysis as to exactly why this venture is worrisome.
Many thanks to
bethbethbeth for bringing this to my attention.
Every once in a while in fandom, someone decides that rather than - oh, say - buy a jump drive or burn a CD or even open a proper archive, the best way to collect other people's work is to post it on their own website without the authors' knowledge or permission, without contact information for them or even the artist's name on fanart.
http://www.amortentia.net/ is such a endeavour, hosted by
tehopheliac. Please have a look at the site to see if any of your fic or art is on it, or anything by someone you know, and if you see something of yours you can email her at lilliththeoddity@gmail.com to request she take it down. I recognise stories from several people here on my f-list, and will be writing to a few who have retired or taken a sabbatical from fandom to let them know what's going on.
eta: If anyone has an email address for
diagonalist, could you let her know about this?

In the Meme Time
Jul. 3rd, 2008 02:59 pmTaken from

Pick a fandom you know I know about, and I'll tell you:
01. The first character I fell in love with
02. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now
03. The character everyone else loves that I don't
04. The character I love that everyone else hates
05. The character I used to love but don't any longer
06. The character I would shag anytime
07. The character I'd want to be like
08. The character I'd slap
09. A pairing that I love
10. A pairing that I hate
11. Favourite character
12. My five favourite characters
13. My five least favourite characters
14. Which character I am most like
15. My deep, dark fandom secret
Fandoms I could answer about include Harry Potter, The Magnificent Seven, various strains of X-Men and Star Trek, Homicide: Life on the Street, Firefly, Tin Man, Fables, Dead Like Me, Battlestar Galactica (2003), The Dark Tower series, Discworld, Torchwood, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Sandman, Lord of the Rings, Dexter, Rome, Deadwood, and Carnivale. There are probably others, so if you know I know something, feel free to pick it.

Journal Deletions
Aug. 3rd, 2007 11:26 amI am so pissed off right now.
I don't know how this newest wave of fuckwittery is going to resolve itself, but in case of emergency you can find me under my current username at both Greatest Journal and Insane Journal.

Odds and Ends
Aug. 8th, 2005 02:37 amOddness: A troll (the internet kind, not the rocky mythological kind) has friended me, obviously because of HP stuff. That's nothing new, but the weird bit is that I scanned his/her userinfo and found that we don't have a single friend in common. Am now dreadfully curious how s/he came across my journal. Huh.
Also, I should be in bed, and instead I'm cleaning and watching late-night TV - and am being punished by the thought that there really, really needs to be some Robert Ironside/Mark Sanger slash.
