So, this is a place where I'm hoping that various people from my fannish life will come say hi to mark the turning of the year! (If you know me face-to-face or from an amateur press association, you might want to visit my legal-name LJ, where there will be a similar post.)
If you don't recognize my fannish identity, then I invited you because I liked something you created and would be glad to know more about you. You can ask me things, too, if you're curious!
Please feel free to mingle and chat among yourselves. I won't be online continuously, but I hope and intend to reply to anyone who stops by, and would love it if conversations started. No time limit.
If you comment anonymously, please say enough that I can tell who you are!
If you'd rather communicate privately, that's fine, too. If you don't have an email address for me, try an LJ message or comment on something of mine over at AO3.
I've made several more pieces of fan art, recently, and posted them to tumblr and ao3. Here are links that will take you to all the art I've posted at each platform. Note that the tumblr link includes pieces made by modifying or pasting photos taken by others; the ao3 link does not.
So, I've made several pieces of fan art in the last few months, most of them made by juxtaposing and altering other people's photos, but I just finished one completely original piece, so this seems like a good time to post at least some links in this neglected journal.
In chronological order:
Steve Rogers in an orange sweater: OK, I think I fixed this one to show the altered photo, again--the original anonimg hosting site seems to be defunct, so I uploaded it to Tumblr in a new post and edited the old post to show the new location: http://danceswchopstck.tumblr.com/…
Watching role-playing at milliways-bar.dreamwidth.org, the mun currently playing Simon Illyan of Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan Saga is using a photo of a man with a short beard and rimless glasses, which conflicts with my own imaginings of Simon as clean-shaven and not glasses-wearing. Which led me to the realization that my mental image of Siman Illyan looks rather like Clark Gregg, who plays Agent Phil Coulson in the Avengers movie and Agents of Shield.
And that led me to mentally juxtapose Nick Fury with Aral Vorkosigan. Seems to me like there are some parallels between the working relationships of Aral with Simon and Nick with Phil.
...I wonder if there's a fanfic plot-bunny in there somewhere.
Three out of those four characters have been played, at least briefly, in Milliways. I don't think Aral's been there, yet, though both Cordelia and Miles and Ivan have. But I think meetings between Aral and Nick or between Simon and Phil (or Aral and Phil or Nick and Simon) would be more interesting if set on Earth or on Barrayar, rather than in the goofy neutral territory of Milliways.
Inadvertant time-travel, I think, rather than alternate-career AUs. Or possibly kidnapping out-of-time of all four of them, by some amoral alien entity along the lines of Qumedon in Phyllis Gottlieb's StarCat books...
FYI, there are now two follow-on works to my ficlet Preliminaries, set in the universe defined by cesperanza's stories 3 Lovers, Snowed In, and With Six You Get Eggroll.
If you're interested in checking them out, I recommend entering by way of the Surprises series listing at AO3. And I do recommend reading the series description, to minimize WTF-ery re the rather jumpy timeline. Note that Treats starts with the drabble Ronon's Choice, which is the only excerpt from the post-Preliminaries parts of the series that is currently posted on LJ.
Series Specs: Including the 900+ words of Preliminaries, the series word count currently stands at a little under 7300 words. As a whole, I'd rate it as Gen kidfic, but there are multiple mentions of polyamory. Warning for un-beta'd-ness and aforementioned jumpy timeline.
Set in cesperanza's 3 Lovers universe, some days after her follow-on story, Snowed In. Compatible with my follow-on story, Preliminaries. Hopefully the first in a series of eight drabbles.
"You're kidding," said John.
"Nope," said Ronon.
Rodney snorted.
"Ronon," said Teyla, "you know what we agreed: only one special treat for each of us, while we are on Earth."
"This is what I want," said Ronon.
"How come?" asked Jace.
Ronon looked at his son for a long moment, then said, "A soldier wouldn't have time for it. A Runner wouldn't think of it. Sateda didn't have it. People like it, and I can learn it here."
"Oh," said Jace.
For the rest of their journey, when they departed from each lodging, an ikebana flower arrangement awaited the maid.
Fandom: A Woman of the Iron People, by Eleanor Arnason
Characters: Anasu (son of Nia and Enshi), Derek Seawarrior Words: 993
Written for: the Canadian Shack 10 Year Anniversary Challenge at AO3 (AO3 link for this ficlet is http://archiveofourown.org/collect…) Warning: Unbeta'd. Summary: Learning from the hairless people is more difficult than Anasu expected.
Author's Notes: This ficlet is set in the universe of Eleanor Arnason's wonderfully anthropological and Tiptree Award-winning two-part novel, A Woman of the Iron People. If you like "strange journey" plots, I highly recommend reading the book.
This ficlet is set post-canon. It contains some spoilers that I think are on the minor side, but opinions on that might vary. Use your own judgement about whether to read further or not--spoilers begin immediately: ( Read more...Collapse )
I just found out that the House of Representatives voted to cancel ALL funds to health clinics like Planned Parenthood.
Planned Parenthoods and local health centers like them provide birth control, Pap tests, and prenatal care to millions of low-income people every year. And apparently more than half of the members of the House of Representatives want to stop funding these clinics!
It's up to the Senate to say "no."
For the sake of all the women you love, at any age or income level, please use the following link to contact your Senators and let them know that we want PP funding preserved.
The Courage Campaign is asking people to sign a brief note to Meghan McCain, asking her to have a conversation with her father, John McCain, about treating all members of our military equally. Meghan McCain supports equal treatment. John McCain is threatening to filibuster against repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell. An appeal from his own daughter might make a difference--ask her to make that appeal at http://www.couragecampaign.org/pag… . Thanks!
