When dialing onto the internet, sometimes I hear a crackling type noise as it dials ie the beep beep beep is not crisp. Then, I usually get an engaged / busy tone or hear the "Your call could not be connected. Please check the number and try again" message. I've checked the signal on my phone and also tried dialing in on another computer and everything is clean and perfect. Seems to be only this one. I've noticed that it happens when I'm trying to burn a DVD, but I don't know if it *only* happens then.

A restart fixes this problem. I have a Dell computer that I bought in December. I figured that if this turns out to be a modem problem, I can have them fix it. What do you think?

Hi guys and gals,

Collapse )

I'm making this website that is primarily coded in PHP. I'm thinking about making an option menu that will allow users to pick information they want to display and display it on a chart. I'm thinking the option menu should be done in Flash or made with PHP graphics, but I don't know which one to choose. I have to do some reading on both. I'll be taking the information from a post, basically, as what I have been doing with most the website.

Anyways, Flash looks cooler. Kids will be looking at this and I want it to look pretty! Also, I have limited knowledge of flash - but I think the help menu is satan and it seems somewhat buggy. The functions don't seem to work consistantly. Maybe it is my inexperience in the program. Also, a GUI will be easy to make.

My reasons for choosing PHP. I been working with PHP the end of the summer - I just learned what it was too this summer. :-) Also, next semester I'll be taking software engineering. This class is project oriented. Teams of four will build a game including a GUI. Though the semester is almost over, working on this too might go hand and hand with this class. I never worked with an API at all. Plus I think PHP is great and have books on it and resources unlike the EVIL SATAN HELP OF FLASH!

So what do you guys think I should do and why?

Plus, my .swf file on My work is freaking jumping on firefox and any netscape derivative. I figured out the problem but I'm kind of baffled. I have some commented code out - you know, something I decided not to delete. Well the over laps are basically the commented code. Take it out, looks how I want it to. Leave it in, freaking out piece of s***. Does netscape have a problem with comments or something? Why would this happen? It does contain php code nestled between too. Would that cause it?

Intrusion Detection

I have been asked by my boss to come into work an hour late tomorrow. He wants me to have a go at trying to break into our computer network from home.

I haven't tried this in any serious way before and am a little unsure about where to start... I would imagine steps would be:

1) See what ports are open on the visible machines and what OS / firmware they are running
2) See if there are any exploits known for those OS/applications etc
3) If you get a shell login prompt attempt to crack the password / social engineer a password out of a member of staff (I was thinking about calling up and pretending to be from our ISP or something)
4) Sit in the car with a laptop and break the wireless WEP key & spoof the MAC address

Any other suggestions?

PS. No. I'm not trying to crack someone elses system. No. Really I'm not. :D

a while ago my computer decided to fail on me and wouldnt turn on at all.

i took it into best buy and they said i needed to replace the power supply.

so i replaced it and i believe i plugged in everything correctly, the motherboard LED turns on as well as the light on the power button but i hear no fans, no buzzing, no signs of actual activity. so my computer is still dead and i have no idea what to do.

i searched a lot on the internet but considering im not very computer smart im still clueless as to what to do.

PLEASE HELP ME.

also:

my main concern is my files, if worse comes to worse could i just install the hard drive into another computer and still have all of my files accessible on said computer?

P.S.
my computer is a gateway 300S
