Windows 2000 Professional
Okay, I have been working on computers a long time---- Started on Commodore PET's with Cassette and BASIC programming language in 7th/8th grade to give people an idea, and I am now closing in on the 35 year old age bracket---If anyone has any solutions to this problem, I would love to hear them.
I have an AMD900 MHz pc, running Win2000 Pro. Under one of my user id's I log in with, (my main user id which is my fist name) I have a problem that just developed last night. I try to load Windows Explorer and it crashes. Last night I made the mistake of downloading MSN Messenger 5 and the latest patches/updates for Windows 2000 Professional. I was logged in as my NAMEID when I downloaded the updates. My NAMEID is set as equal to administrators, so it is not a level of access issue. When it crashes, an error box pops up and says, "Windows Explorer created errors and must shut down. An Error log will be created.” Windows 2000 Gurus that want to take a crack, I can tell you several things:
1) The error happens weather I use a shortcut on my desktop to Windows Explorer or go to the START menu and RUN and work my way down to the EXPLORER.EXE in the WINNT Subdirectory.
2) I also have shortcuts on my desktop to other subdirectories on my hard drives and they also cause it to crash.
3) I have already removed MSN 5 to see if this was the cause of my errors it wasn't, because it is still doing it
4) If I long in as Administrator or another user (I.E. TEST), also set to Administrator Level, Explorer is OK
5) I don't want to just DELETE my main user id because this is where my email messages, address book, shortcuts on my desktop, and my favorites in explorer are all saved
6) I am running NAV 2002, Roxio CD Creator, Direct CD basic edition, and Drivers for a USB 2.0 card, and an external Maxtor USB 2.0 40GB hard drive. These are all in the toolbar at the lower right corner of the screen. However, I was running all of this BEFORE the error started happening without any problems.
7) I have tried numerous combinations of logging off and back on and rebooting and shutting down without any success.
Again, let me know if there are any Windows 2000 gurus that want to take a shot, I would be eternally grateful. I have a feeling that I am going to just have to figure out how to backup the above mentioned files and delete the user id and recreate it, but that is a worse case scenario. Also, fellow GURU's that need additional info, please let me know, and I will provide it. I just am not sure what other info you are going to need to help me. Thanks in advance to one and all
