Allowlist request - NOAA domains

edit

{{Edit request}}

This is a request to...

  • add (a) domain(s) to the allowlist

Domain(s) to be added or removed from the allowlist:

  • 1. *.noaa.gov National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) (almost all NOAA pages are preceded by www.)
  • 2. *.*.noaa.gov NOAA (for sites such as www.spc.noaa.gov)
  • 3. *.*.*.noaa.gov NOAA (for additional pages such as www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov and NOAA GOES satellite imagery pages at NESDIS, and should also cover the currently allowed www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov)
  • 4. weather.gov National Weather Service (NWS) (a constituent agency of NOAA)
  • 5. *.weather.gov NWS (cover www. pages and other weather.gov pages)

Link(s) to (an) example file(s) that can be uploaded from this/these domain(s)

I know this is a lot, but I have done uploads for all of these dot cases hence the multi-request. If there were a way of just doing the entirety of noaa.gov and weather.gov, that would obviously be more ideal. Thanks. – Master of Time (talk) 20:20, 26 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

I'll add that I don't completely understand how the page works, so if I've overcomplicated this somehow, feel free to propose a better solution. Thanks. Master of Time (talk) 20:21, 26 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

  Done --Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 18:17, 30 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for fulfilling my request. I still get a 403 forbidden error when trying to download from this link. Does straight noaa.gov need to be added? Very annoyed that I tried to account for every edge case yet the server still refuses to authorize my request. Master of Time (talk) 23:06, 19 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Accuracy-searcher: These files are in public domain – do you have a source for that? I can’t find a statement like that on https://www.villagelegacy.ca/ nor https://www.cmaj.ca/ (and the latter has a standard “All rights reserved” boilerplate text in the footer). (Disabling edit request for now so it doesn’t obscure other new edit requests. Feel free to reenable the edit request and/or ping me when you reply.) --Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 17:17, 5 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Regarding www.cmaj.ca, they provide two Creative Commons licenses: Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial No Derivatives (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0) and Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0), found here https://www.cmaj.ca/copyright. Please confirm if CMAJ's copyright aligns with Wikipedia standards and my request. Thanks for your time, Lucas. Much appreciated. Accuracy-searcher (talk) 16:49, 8 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Accuracy-searcher: CC BY 4.0 is compatible with Commons, but CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 isn’t (both NC and ND are incompatible, see Commons:Licensing#Forbidden licenses). Do you know how many of the articles are under CC BY? “In some instances” doesn’t sound like much :/ Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 15:35, 13 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
The AIDS and LGBT documentation is under CC BY 4.0, and that's the information I'm using. The licensing aspect is a bit more complex than I initially thought, but that's okay. I'll go ahead and close my request. I have another question – perhaps you could point me in the right direction. I want to add a logo to a page I'm creating, and I noticed that a URL can be used from the corporation. Where do I start this process? Thanks again for your time, Lucas. Much appreciated. Allowlist request - US National Archives

  • There are over a million files from the US National Archives, and a bot I operate frequently uploads them. The media URLs used to all be at archives.gov (already on the whitelist), but they have since started using bare s3 links without the domain redirecting. All of their media URLs start with "https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/", but I don't see other examples of a domain with a URL path, so I wasn't sure if this is allowed, since we don't want to whitelist all of s3. Will this be possible?

Thank you – Dominic (talk) 16:22, 12 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Not done – I’m afraid this allowlist really is only for domains, not URL prefixes, and as you pointed out we can’t whitelist all of S3 :( (see also #Allowlist request - https://s3.amazonaws.com above) --Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 18:55, 17 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

https://finna.fi/Record/tmk.161049517008700

The rationale is that https://museo.disec.fi hosts the hi-resolution version of images of w:Turku museum center. Files are linked from Finna API and Finna's www-interfaces download links. Most of the images in the server are CC-BY or PDM, but some are non-free. Adding the domain removes the step where the image would be needed to be downloaded locally before uploading to commons. --Zache (talk) 18:28, 27 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Not done, sorry. Legamus seems to be exclusively for works which are in the public domain in some countries but not in the United States (as a counterpart to LibriVox, which requires works to be in the public domain in the United States but not necessarily elsewhere) – if I understand that correctly, then those files aren’t suitable for Commons, per Commons:Licensing. And I don’t think we can allowlist the whole London School of Economics either – both of those domains seem to contain plenty of copyrighted material too. --Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 13:39, 1 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Иованъ: Is there more specific licensing information about the files available somewhere? The linked page mentions acceso libre y gratuito / free and open access, but I don’t see a specific license (or copyright statement), neither there nor on the details page for the linked PDF; and while that work (1799-1802) is certainly in the public domain by now, I don’t think that’s true for all the works on that website (e.g. this catalog is apparently from 1995). Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 12:52, 1 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
Then could you allowlist just the https://bibdigital.rjb.csic.es/medias/36/29/ca/99/3629ca99-148e-4326-9810-e8a0f2adf9c3/files/WAL_Desc_Icon_1.pdf file? My connection is too poor for download-upload of PDF files so I have to do it directly. Иованъ (talk) 12:56, 1 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Иованъ: We can’t allowlist individual URLs (only full domains), but I can try to upload the file for you (the server seems to be behaving weirdly but I managed to download a copy) – what should the target filename be? @Iñaki LL: From the last link, it sounds like the content is partially “all rights reserved”, partially CC BY-SA, and partially CC BY-SA-NC, but it’s not clear to me how to tell which is which? If you go to one of the gallery pages, how can you tell if the photos are okay to upload to Commons or not, and which author to credit? (Maybe it’s obvious if you speak Basque and I’m just not looking at the right place 😅) Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 20:24, 22 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
Hi Lucas, you are right, attention to detail is necessary and other languages may shed further light in this case. It is all in the bottom of each page. As a general principle, I think they are trying to be cautious in case there is material (text or graphic) that is not CC-BY-SA. The home page is in English too, and this is what it reads in the legal notice at the bottom (FR).
This is a particular page of the website, you would need to go to the bottom of it, and you read the licence notice in English first, further details are provided in French at the link. Iñaki LL (talk) 07:24, 23 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Iñaki LL: I’m still not sure about this. I’ve clicked a bit around the website, and so far the part at the bottom (between their address and their socials + newsletter signup) always seems to say “CC BY-SA”, even on pages like Urtzi Etxeberria where the person’s portrait is tagged CC BY-SA-NC.
I looked through the existing files linking to this domain (Special:LinkSearch/https://www.eke.eus/), and the only file where the license statement filled me with confidence is File:Maite Lafourcade EKE 2010.jpg, because the photo on the source page is captioned “CC-BY-SA Euskal kultur erakundea (2010)” directly under the photo. Whereas File:Lurbinttoko Ohoinak Etxeandi1.jpg is credited to EKE, LaukitikAt, but the only mention of LaukitikAt on the linked page seems to be referring to a different photo which is captioned “© LaukitikAt (EKE | cc-by-sa-nc)” (emphasis added). Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 17:41, 23 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
You are right, that is ambiguous. It seems to me they are trying to help spreading their content but are not very familiar with the licensing system. I would say as a general rule (stated in the legal notice at the bottom) text and graphic content are CC-BY-SA unless stated otherwise in the caption. However, can we put this discussion on hold? I will try to contact them and shed some more light on this issue. Iñaki LL (talk) 19:05, 23 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Iñaki LL: Sure, thanks! I’ve disabled the edit request for now, feel free to reenable it when it’s ready. --Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 19:13, 23 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Lucas Werkmeister So I contacted them. The person in charge let me know that they do wish to let their graphic and text materials for reuse, but do not feel confident enough. To sum up, the license in the caption prevails and not all the website is CC-BY-SA, although there may be elements in it that are. Would this make the website eligible for a partial inclusion in the CC-BY-SA list? Regards Iñaki LL (talk) 16:40, 30 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

  • I would have saved a small amount time uploading File:Eagle Claw wrecks at Desert One.png if I hadn't had to download and then upload it. It is also a hassle uploading TIFFs from the Naval Historical Center.

Link(s) that demonstrate that files on this/these domain(s) have Commons-compatible licenses

  • Their footer has a copyright notice (lol), but PD-USGOV is almost always applicable to most content on .mil sites and certainly for history.navy.mil

Done I've added *.*.mil as well. Thank you! Bedivere (talk) 19:46, 2 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
@JayCubby @Bedivere: I’m not gonna revert this, but IMHO it sounds far too wide. Surely the military sometimes publishes non-own still-copyrighted works on .mil websites? (“I would have saved a small amount [of] time” isn’t the strongest motivation either.) Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 20:12, 5 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Lucas Werkmeister yes, your first part is absolutely true. However, it's fairly rare for media they publish to be under copyright (with the exception of dvidshub, but that isn't allowlisted).
By hassle, I mean I frequently deal with 250 MB TIFF files. I'm not in a third-world country, but those take a substantial amount of time to download and then upload. Uploading from URL saves that hassle. JayCubby (talk) 20:18, 5 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Lucas Werkmeister Given that the right to upload from URLs is limited to trusted users, I'd think this is surely going to be more helpful than it isn't. Bedivere (talk) 23:40, 5 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Bedivere: Is it? Special:ListGroupRights and Commons:Upload by URL both claim it’s available to all logged in users (apparently they don’t even need to be autoconfirmed). Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 19:54, 6 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
My bad then. However, I think the risk is minimal, or at least equal to anybody uploading a copyright violation straight away from their hard drives. .mil is "the sponsored top-level domain (sTLD) in the Domain Name System of the Internet for the United States Department of Defense and its subsidiary or affiliated organizations". Most material under that .mil may be in the public domain. Bedivere (talk) 20:12, 6 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Bedivere, looks like it still isn't quite working. I think it may need an extra asterisk, as this TIFF doesn't upload, courtesy of the extra www.

Thanks. JayCubby (talk) 23:17, 20 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Ucriesidelplata: How do we know which exact license the files are released under? AFAICT the linked page doesn’t specify the version of CC BY-SA :( Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 15:07, 1 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Lucas Werkmeister, thanks for your reply. Here specify the Licence, but not the version, you're right. I'm talking to the authorities to have it included ASAP. Can you wait before rejecting the request? Thanks! Ucriesidelplata (talk) 14:25, 2 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi @VIGNERON thank you! The new domain works fine, however "noirlab.edu" (without the leading wildcard) should be reinstated in the list in addition to the new domain, as there are still old files there, that have not been moved to the new domain, and we can't import them now. Example: https://noirlab.edu/public/media/archives/images/original/iotw2402a.tif vip (talk) 14:46, 1 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Anohthterwikipedian   Not done – I did reverse image searches for some of the images on their website and found plenty of matches on random other websites (without clear license information there, but often preceding the aliancabike.org.br date). I don’t know whether these are stock photos they’ve legitimately obtained, or just arbitrary images blithely copied around, but either way I don’t believe that they have permission to publish them CC BY 4.0, and it would almost certainly not be correct for us to upload them credited (“by”) to this website. (If you disagree, feel free to enable the {{Edit request}} template again, but for now I’m disabling it so that this page can go out of the maintenance category again.) --Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 17:17, 10 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

Link(s) that demonstrate that files on this/these domain(s) have Commons-compatible licenses This url belongs to www.dvidshub.net, the US military website (Department of Defence), we added their main one already but thats mainly for images, i think they now upload their large videos to cloudfront so this was the url i got while trying to upload a 2GB video to commons, that link above won't work as it needs tokens which expires thus why its necessary to add that specific URL...hopefully its the only one they use for large videos

Thank you – Stemoc 04:24, 26 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Not done – @Stemoc: The subdomain seems to be unstable – I did a Google search for that file name (please link the source website next time) and now it links me to https://d34w7g4gy10iej.cloudfront.net/video/2509/DOD_111314811/DOD_111314811.mp4 (content warning: Trump), which is the same URL path but on a different domain. I don’t think adding individual cloudfront.net subdomains to the allowlist is useful, and we definitely can’t allowlist all of cloudfront. --Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 18:10, 10 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

Not done, or at least not done yet. @PantheraLeo1359531: I’m afraid the second file (the PDF) identifies itself as being under Datenlizenz Deutschland - Namensnennung - Version 2.0, which as far as I know is basically a joke license that we consequently don’t appear to have a license template for. And you wrote that the first domain is used by the second link, where the (C) Nutzungs- und Lizenzbedingungen names the Datenlizenz Deutschland – Zero, so I don’t feel comfortable adding this domain to the allowlist either. Can you find a source which makes it clear that some of these files are unambiguously published under a sensible CC license, without the DL-DE stuff? --Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 19:02, 10 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Lucas Werkmeister Okay, thank you for your comment and for your works on checking the domains :).
Afaik there are no files that are under a CC license, but we have specific license template for these cases: Template:Data license Germany-Zero-2.0, Template:Data license Germany-attribution-2.0. But yes, I couldn't find CC-licensed files. :(
The files at https://www.opengeodata.nrw.de/produkte/ use the attribution license and the zero variant, as I can see. Kind regards --PantheraLeo1359531 😺 (talk) 20:02, 10 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

Done – note that the first and third “example files” aren’t suitable for URL upload (they’re HTML pages embedding the image, not direct image links – and they actually embed the image from an archive.org domain), but the second one is suitable (and the first and third can be made so by changing /page/ to /pageimage/ in the URL). --Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 15:55, 31 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

Allowlist request - (Please add the name of the site you want to add here)

edit

{{Edit request}}

This is a request to...

  • add (a) domain(s) to the allowlist

Domain(s) to be added or removed from the allowlist:

  • app.fireyak.org

Link(s) to (an) example file(s) that can be uploaded from this/these domain(s)

  • The app/webapp currently only shows images that are already uploaded to wikimedia. The images relate to openstreetmap fire hydrants.

I do want to add an editing option for the fire hydrants and I also want to allow users uploading images for existing hydrants.

  • Sample fire hydrant with an existing image:

https://app.fireyak.org/#/markers/3832406828 (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/10/Fire-fighting-facility_node-3832406828.jpg)

Link(s) that demonstrate that files on this/these domain(s) have Commons-compatible licenses

  • (this could be a URL for a site-wide license statement)
  • (or URLs for some per-file "details" pages, if different files on this site have different licenses)
  • (or something else)

Thank you – Stoanarrr (talk) 19:52, 16 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Stoanarrr: The app/webapp currently only shows images that are already uploaded to wikimedia – then what do you want to import / upload from there? (Also, the given example link is not a file that can be uploaded.) --Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 23:22, 16 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Lucas Werkmeister: I am currently developing a feature that enables users to add or update fire hydrant data on OpenStreetMap (OSM) directly from within the web application. This functionality also includes the ability for users to capture and upload new images of the fire hydrants using their device's camera, with the upload process managed entirely by my site.
So I do not have a specific file that will be uploaded from my site because the image will be taken by the user. Stoanarrr (talk) 06:09, 17 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Stoanarrr: Maybe it would be better to let the user upload the file directly to Commons via OAuth? Otherwise, I think I’d prefer to wait for the feature to be ready before the domain is added to the allowlist. Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 19:18, 17 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
