This is a community dedicated to Chinese novels and media related to these novels (e.g., audio dramas, audio books, donghua adaptations, etc.). Most of the focus will be on Chinese webnovels, but if you'd like to discuss, e.g., a Chinese SFF novel, please feel free!

Requests, news, discussions, meta, reviews, recommendations, thoughts, questions all welcome. Fanworks, your fantranslations, relevant events, all great too~

It's likely things will evolve as time passes, as the community gets more of a feel of what people wants to see, or if there's specific things that needs to be changed, so I will update this post as we go too.

Rules and guidelines for posting and commenting:

2. Please fill the subject line, and use headers.
2.1 Content warnings are appreciated when recommending a title (e.g., ableism, rape, gore, racism/xenophobia, etc.).

7. Please be respectful to other community members.
8. Feel free to cross-post!
9. If your posts includes NSFW material, whatever that may be, adjust the post's age restriction. The default is no restriction.

I read Meng Xi Shi's Thousand Autumns (the 7S version) in just over a week, which should say how much I enjoyed it. It was faster and lighter reading compared to the other MXS book I've read (The 14th Year of Chenghua), but I knew to expect the history and politics infodump. To sum it up: loved ragebaiting asshole Yan Wushi, wanted to pet Shen Qiao, and perhaps offer some words of condolences to Yan Wushi's poor disciples.

My thoughts are here (thought on the whole story are in the book 5 post

It sorta came up in last week's read-in-progress post, but it might be fun to create bingo cards for authors!

So, here's an effort to crowd source ideas for your favourite authors (or authors you just happen to read more than one work from and found some patterns).

For each author proposed for the bingo card, leave a top level comment and then reply to that author with some patterns you've noticed. Feel free to link this out or just ask your friends! There are no right or wrong suggestions, as long as you are having fun and you've noticed it in at least two works.

(I added a few authors to start us off with!)

Previously, [personal profile] douqi shared a newsletter here. It's a series of webnovel recommendations by various groups of people: Part 1 compiles recommendations from students and fan translators; part 2 from webnovel authors and researchers; part 3 from professional literary translators and workers in the Chinese webnovel industry. When it was posted earlier, only part 1 was up. This is heads up that part 2 and 3 are now up.

Link: The Cold Window Guide to Chinese Internet Literature

I've picked two short reads from the series of recommendations, and I really enjoyed them so this doubles as a rec post.
Cut for length: Recs - End of the Bridge, Top of the Tower; An Exile Among Humanity; Sadfic Manifesto )

My preorder of Demon Venerable Also Wants to Know volume 1 finally arrived, & I've posted my thoughts here, if anyone is interested. (Also heads up that the preorder window for volume 2 closes on Monday.)

Disclaimer: I don't speak Chinese, so can't comment on the accuracy of the translation, just on the quality of the English text, how it compares to the Mourningcrow translation, & the general presentation.

A while back, Andrew Rule, a Chinese-to-English translator and the author of the Cold Window newsletter asked me and a few other fan translators for recommendations for an ongoing project on Chinese webnovels. The post featuring those particular recommendations, alongside recommendations from postgraduate students in the field, went up earlier today, and can be read here.

Two further recommendation posts will be up shortly, and Andrew has also written a whole series of posts on webnovels.
