WEEK TWO: Can We Get Her Out? + Playlists & Podfic & Music

Let’s hear it for the girls! Fuck misogyny in fandom: unbury, unfridge, or otherwise return a dead wife, fridged woman, or neglected female character to the land of the living. Who is she? What is she like? Why do you love her? Tell us everything. We’re all ears. Relatedly, our sommelier suggests pairing this prompt with an audible expression of fannish creation. Perhaps a mixtape which nails her vibe, or an original track which challenges her canonical fate? Tune in: we’ve got a bit of inspiration for you.

Make a playlist or fanmix. Whether you work on Spotify or YouTube, list tracks on tumblr, Dreamwidth, or Pillowfort, or make CDs or cassettes, share your fan soundtrack. Annotations, lyric snippets, and cool covers are highly encouraged! Draw inspiration from our #playlist tag, or read The Death and Resurrection of the Fanmix.
Create a fannish audiobook: a podfic! Whilst it can take a bit of bravery to put your voice out there, it’s a fantastic way to contribute to the fannish community by making fics more accessible. Long-time listener, first-time caller? Not to worry. On tumblr, check out A Beginner’s Guide to Making Podfics, and on AO3, try A Newbie’s Guide to Podficcing, A step-by-step guide to your first (tenth, hundredth) podfic, or Keep it Simple: A Highly Biased Podfic Guide For Absolute Beginners. For tips on hosting your podfic, give A Breakdown of Podfic Hosting Options a read, and don’t forget to check out this site which offers a fairly comprehensive resource on all things podfic.
Write a songfic. Whilst controversial in some spaces, we think it’s a fantastic way to blend music and fanfiction! Give How to Write a Songfic a read, though please note that we at Be A Goldfish are big fans of fangirls and thus do not endorse the misogynistic language present in the how-to, or check out The Soundtrack for advice on picking the perfect tune.
Mix your own music. Get crazy in GarageBand, demonstrate your cunning lyricism, adapt a favourite song to fit your fandom, or bang out the tunes a la Neil! A filk, which is a fannish folk song either originally composed or adapted from an existing tune, might be a fun choice. Hone your skills: read How I Filk and A Guide to Multivoice Filking, or listen to the FilkCast podcast. Don’t forget to check out The Lightning Bolt and Into This New Hell, filks shared during BAG26A!

Title: Puffy Pot-stickers!

Details: Recipe is just a combo of a couple different ones I found online and put together
Summary: Some pot-stickers I made from scratch based off Chen's Noodle House's special puffy pot-stickers!
Notes: They sort of came out inconsistently sized, and some of them were bigger than I meant, but I think that just matches them being called puffy pot-stickers (also it meant I could give my friend, whom I forced to go to the store on his way home from work, the puffiest one)

This was the third of our four Least Tern Watch shifts. We last went two weeks ago, which I somehow did not post about. There was a great deal less activity then than there was the first week, and even less today. SE, who runs the site, told us that some terns had already left to fly south til next season; they will all be gone by about mid-August, although it's not known exactly where they go, off the coast of Central or South America, presumably. Adult birds were standing around with fish in their beaks and chicks of all sizes were still being fed, but the density of events was much lower. We did have some predator excitement, first a Red-tailed Hawk flew by, over the shoreline rather than over the colony. I'm sure they'd take a tern but they'd rather have a ground squirrel. But toward the end of our shift a Peregrine Falcon materialized right over the colony, seemingly out of nowhere. U got on the radio and alerted SE and the Wildlife Services person sitting in a pickup on the other side of the colony, who went after the bird and fired two noise grenades (dunno the real name), which scared them off. We didn't see them take anyone, which is good. Also good is that U got a Peregrine Falcon for her Alameda County year list.:) ( To that end I submitted a list: )

We saw these while inside the restricted area. When we were leaving we drove out to Antenna Pier, as the map calls it, across from the Hornet. The Great Blue Herons have departed their poor, dead nest trees but there were lots of Caspian Terns in their breeding colony and a few Barn Swallows zipping around. We'd wondered at there being no Canada Geese on the old runways around the Least Tern field office, but we found them in the much more pleasant habitat of some nearby playing fields.:) One more shift next week.

Harken back to days of yore: Minecraft, The Sims, LEGO, or Lincoln Logs. Create a fanwork which engages with worldbuilding, or explore in-universe creations. Fill us in on the gaps in canon, expound upon fanon, explore fictional nonfiction, try a chatfic or social media AU, or draw inspiration from works like NECKZ ‘n THROATS, an in-universe magazine created by the Teen Wolf fandom. Week one is a great week to give fanfood a whirl, too! Try a recipe, or create one of your own. Decorate cupcakes, make a themed meal, or sip blue milk. Need more ideas? We got you.

Browse sites like Feast of Starlight, The Gluttonous Geek, InLiterature, Geeky Chef, and Geeks Who Eat, which curate a generous selection of both individual recipes and themed feasts inspired by a variety of shows, films, games, and books.
Tumblrinas, rejoice! The Nerdy Recipes index offers a vast selection, Fandom Cocktails curates themed mixed drinks, and our food tag displays the fannish food, drinks, and recipes made in rounds past and present.
Check out published fannish cookbooks like Marvel: Eat the Universe, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Recipes from Sunnydale, A Feast of Ice and Fire, or Supernatural: The Official Cookbook. We strongly recommend searching for these texts and others like them at your local library, through the Internet Archive, on the seven seas, or at secondhand shops before purchasing new at your local bookshop.

This morning I went up early, but not quite early enough, to look at a trail I could not access last winter because of mud. Turned out to be the junction of two trails and I walked a bit of each. One is very steep down to the Lake and I won't be going that way; the other goes to the Brazilian Room, and I might try a bit more of it. But not today, so I walked along the Lake for a while, an hour and a half all told. No birds on the Lake in Summer but there was a Great Blue Heron on the lawn and two Double-crested Cormorants flew over. Lake Anza has a small beach but today was not swimming weather, so the people who inspired "not early enough" were kids' groups and families walking dogs. ( The list: )

Best bird was White-breasted Nuthatch. We had them in the Nature Area last Winter but in February they seemed to have gone back to their prefered nesting areas, so it was fun to hear them today.

Went up an hour later in hopes of avoiding fog and wind; yes to the former and not the latter but that helped. The most striking thing about this morning was the abundance of Pygmy Nuthatches. Maybe all the babies fledged this week, because it's a bird I don't always hear yet today I heard them everywhere. They are tiny and usually high in tall pines but I managed to see one, so that was fun. Good woodpeckers, Black Phoebe again, and Blue-gray Gnatcatchers heard in two places. Also there seems to be a selasphorous hummingbird hanging around; other people have reported it and I've seen it twice. He won't stay long, but it's nice to have him around for a while. No Western Wood-pewee, and no MacGillivray's Warbler.:( I hope to go at sunrise next time, see if that makes a difference.
