Hey there!

I'm moving to Rogers Park this weekend and I want to know if anybody here is still around on LJ, and still doing the Freegan/dumpster diving thing. I've been snagging stuff off the side of the road for years, but mostly furniture and other odds and ends. I'm trying to save up money for school, so I want to live as dirt-cheap as I can at this point. I'd love to get together with folks who know the area and where to look. If you're interested in showing a Chicago newbie the ropes, please let me know!

Need your help!!!!

Ok now is the time when I need your guys' help... badly. I have been searching and searching and finding almost nothing. So here is what I need. I need info on big stores policies on throwing away things and why they do it. For example: Gap throwing away 4 pairs of jeans because they are out of style, or because if they throw it away their taxes are cheaper. Mind you that was all pulled out of my butt cause I can't find anything on stores policies. So if any of you could help me out with this that would be amazing. It doesn't have to be on big chain stores either. At this point anything will help. Thank you all so much!!!!

Anyone alive here....

I haven't dumpstered in years. But I want to start doing it again. I go to NCC in Naperville, but can take the train to Chicago. I was thinking of dumpstering in Chicago somewhere but didn't know if there were any good places around. Also if anyone in this community can help me with some info on stores policies about throwing away things and everything that would be great. I am doing my research paper on dumpster diving.

We're cleaning out the basement office at 1212 E 59th St today, and everything is currently being moved outside. We've got chairs, desks, computer monitors, more chairs, random books and antiquey windows, and lots of dust swirling about. It'll probably be around for the rest of the afternoon and maybe this evening. Come pick through it!

If you're in Lincoln Square today...

In the alley behind 2557-9 W Wilson Ave, (just off of Rockwell).
(Wilson & Rockwell)

It looks like some upstanding gentleman either died, or got kicked out rather hurriedly.
The dumpster is filled to the brim with really nice suits and shoes and such. Some stuff is still in the dry cleaning wrappers.

I don't know WHY anyone would throw this stuff out instead of just taking it to GoodWill, Salvation Army, Brown Elephan, even Village Thrift, or the like. If there's still a lot out there tomorrow, I will probably scoop it up and do just that.

Happy Diving.

FREEGAN.INFO UPDATE--Call for Media Spokespeople

Freegan.info, a group and website promoting freeganism, has gotten a ton of media requests lately from journalists all over the country who want to find local freegans to interview.

Freeganism is a lifestyle based around adapting practical strategies to minimize personal consumer impact, cut financial support for the capitalist system that is destroying the earth and human and animal lives, and create new methods for people to survive and thrive based on sharing, mutual aid, social responsibility, and ecological concern. Freegan practices include dumpster diving for food, clothing, funiture, etc., squatting buildings, guerilla gardening, train hopping, and more. If you aren't familiar with freeganism, visit http://freegan.info. Or for a quick definition of freeganism, visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freeg…

(Add this line for animal rights pages: If you aren't sure what freeganism has to do with animal rights, visit http://http://freegan.info/?page=A… . As many animal rights activists have heard inaccurate descriptions of what a freegan is, you may be surprised to learn that freeganism is a lifestyle that powerfully reinforces animal rights ethics.)
