personally i think it'd be super funny if erid was like, REALLY concerned about the ethical implications of "keeping an intelligent individual "trapped" in an enclosure where they might feel pressured to not speak up and simply do what other eridians tell them out of fear of death", so they have a whole ethics committee full of social workers and eridian rights lawyers and stuff. meanwhile grace is just like "hey my zookeepers, can you make it rain in my cage tomorrow. thanks <3"

The thought comes to her one morning.

She's sitting there, watching her maid do her hair in intricate loops and put all sorts of wonderful combs and hair sticks in it.

Shizun is never going to do my hair for me again.

He couldn't. Even if A-Luo ever felt merciful enough to let him out of the dungeon, her Shizun was quite literally unable to do it himself. Because he no longer had any hands to do it with. Because she no longer had any of her combs, ribbons, or hair sticks from home here at the palace.

She no longer had a home there because Qing Jing Peak no longer exists. A-Luo made sure of that.

She found she suddenly couldn't bear the thought. She was barely aware of dismissing her maid as she kept staring at her own face. Who was this woman looking back at her? With her sensual makeup, intricate hairstyles, and sheer robes? When had she stopped wearing ribbons? When was the last time Shizun-

It had been years now. Almost a decade, even. The time had moved so fast. How had she not noticed? How could she let her love for A-Luo distract her so much?

They used to have tea every week. Her Shizun and her. He always claimed he got the sweet fruit tea for her, but she knew he loved them even more. No one else got to try that tea. No one else got to know about it even. Just Shizun and her.

They would sit there for hours just chatting. Some of her most fond memories were back from when she was still little--before people started making noises about a young lady spending so many hours alone with him--just sitting there and chatting while he braided her hair.

He learned how to braid hair from his San-Jie, he said. Though she was long gone, even before Qing Jing Peak was nothing but rubble and scorch marks instead of lush bamboo forests and clear lakes.

She reminded him of a young girl he once knew, he said. But even then she was his favorite. She liked being his favorite.

Qing Jing Peak already had so few girls--Qi-Shigu made sure of that--but even with him giving them all more time and attention, he always set aside more time for her. Everyone knew it. She could feel the jealous looks people, even A-Luo, used to give her. A part of her was even happy for it. Knowing she was his favorite person on the whoooole peak. All of Cang Qiong even.

Except apparently Yue-Zhangmen. Not that it did either of them any good in the end.

She wonders if she's still his favorite.

med people are so annoying "This family's 8 year old child who was about to go through a major surgery and kept crying that she was hungry so they pitied her and gave her food, she then had a heart attack in the surgery. They're so stupid 😒" girl they didn't know that could happen or why it happens. it takes so little time to explain to them that will happen instead of telling them "no food" with no explanation 10 times

revizyonist

"Before surgery, your body’s reflexes that protect your airway are relaxed by anesthesia. If there’s food or liquid in your stomach, it will near certainly come back up and go into your lungs, which can cause choking, a severe lung / heart infection or even a heart attack. That’s called aspiration, and it is life-threatening. It's hard, but it's only a single day to prevent near certain death. Not eating or drinking beforehand massively lowers the risk and helps prevent these life threatening situations under anesthesia." <- TIP: patients have brains which allows them to receive information just like you

I have four kids. I’ve had one or another of them need some kind of surgical procedure that requires anesthesia four or five times over the past 15 years.

This Tumblr post is the first time someone has explained to me *why* I couldn’t feed them before those instances.

I’m not stupid. I understood that just fine. Hell, my kids would have understood that just fine. But no one bothered to tell us.

i did know this before having kids (i have six). we have a kid that's needed multiple procedures requiring anesthesia. and every single time, i am asked multiple times if i'm sure he was not given any food or water after a certain point.

every single time i have had to say, "i understand that if he had food or water, he could aspirate it into his lungs under anesthesia. i am not lying to you." THEN someone would make a little note and i would stop being repeatedly asked.

not a single time was that risk explained to me. the only reason it came up was because i already knew. i still don't understand why it isn't standard pre-op counseling or pre-op check information, when me as a parent acknowledging the actual risk also put THE MEDICAL STAFF at ease because i conveyed that i had informed understanding as reason to not lie about giving my kid food.

"maybe some people will get nervous and refuse surgery" okay so they need more counseling about risks and anxiety, not less information in a way that actually does endanger their child or themselves!

Last year, I befriended a Catholic seminarian. We've gotten to be pretty decent friends. Seeing as he was staying in town for the summer and I wasn't, I entrusted him with caring for my plant.

He did a wonderful job, but as he was returning my plant to my custody, he explained "I watered her every other day, I gave her new dirt, moved her into the sunshine, prayed the rosary-"

"What?"

He looked at me, confused. "Isn't she a plant you pray with?"

"No," I said slowly. "She's a prayer plant. That's the... colloquial name of the plant."

Upon seeing his stricken face, I realized something went wrong. Turns out, this entire time, he's been including my plant in on his prayers and leaving her near icons.

Listen, totally cool. My plant becoming Catholic is a great deal for her not dying over the summer. But now I must navigate this interfaith household. Keep me in your thoughts.

#i love prayer plants but they're fussy so I don't keep them#can we have a picture op they're so pretty

Behold, Dorothea

(Naming my plant "Gift of God," and then giving her to a seminarian with just the explanation that it's a prayer plant? Okay, that's my bad.)

I should also add- I ran into my rabbi and explained the situation. I then asked, earnestly, if there was a remedy. A mikveh of sorts, or a beit din, or something.

He turned to me, sighed, and said in a very deadpan tone-- "Plants don't have covenants, Joy,"

So Dorothea's a free agent according to rabbinic opinion. I guess I'll permit her to be Roman Catholic.
