Rock-Hounding in the House of the Devil

Mammoth Lakes Travelog #14
Casa Diablo Mountain · Tue, 7 Jul 2026. 4:30pm.

After finishing our hike to Long Lake this afternoon we considered what to do next. We had another hike on our list that we could do but we were too tired to embark on another hike. Yet it felt too early in the day to call it quits and go back to the hotel. Hawk had another idea on her list: let's go rock-hounding at the House of the Devil. I said okay because I don't mind doing stuff for her, and maybe I'd have a little fun driving the 4x4 trails up the mountain.

The high desert at Benton Crossing (Jul 2026)

The seemingly best route to Casa Diablo Mountain (House of the Devil Mountain) looped around on paved roads from US-395 to Benton Crossing. Heading east across the high desert of the Long Valley Caldera gave us views of a few mountain ranges east of us, including the imposing White Mountain range, home to a 14er. "We're not driving up that," I thought. Indeed, Casa Diablo is a small mountain.

Driving a 4x4 trail to Casa Diablo (Jul 2026)

After driving 15ish miles on paved county roads we drove 5.5 miles on good dirt roads before we hit the fun stuff, climbing up the side of Casa Diablo. "Fun" in this case is a two-track with scrub in the middle and shrubs on the sides scraping against the paint of our 4x4. We stopped initially below a hill that had some deep ruts and off-camber bits (pic above). But then after Hawk walked up and over that hill on foot while exploring I decided to try following her in the truck.

The hill had one spot where I had a front wheel way up in the air and needed to engage the rear locker to push through it. Possibly I could have backed down a bit and tried a different line without needing the locker, but hey— I have the gear— let's do this! The next hill also had another spot where I switched the locker on briefly.

Probably we should have explored further up the road, seeing if we could drive all the way (or even most of the way) to the peak. But we're both tired and hungry. Dinner and the hot tub back in Mammoth Lakes are calling our names!

Easy Evening in Mammoth

Mammoth Lakes Travelog #15
At the Westin · Tue, 7 Jul 2026. 9pm.

Our hike yesterday to Long Lake high up in the John Muir Wilderness really wore us out. What we didn't leave on that trail we used up wheeling at the House of the Devil. When we got back to Mammoth Lakes yesterday we headed straight to dinner at a local pizza restaurant. After eating our fill we drove back to the hotel... where we've barely left our room for 14 hours.

An evening soak in the hot tub at the Westin Monache (Jul 2026)

Well, Hawk hasn't left the room for 14 hours. I went downstairs yesterday evening to use the hot tub. Oh, it felt good to soak in the warm water. Plus, I have a #PoolLife streak to uphold. No way was I going to miss a day of going in the water when I was at a hotel with a pool and two hot tubs!

Slow Morning in Mammoth. Let's Just Head Home. 😞

Mammoth Lakes Travelog #16
Lee Vining · Wed, 8 Jul 2026. 11am.

After taking it easy last night in Mammoth we took it easy again this morning— though today it felt not like a reward but a capitulation. We're both still a bit worn out from last night and we're not feeling well. For Hawk, it's the normal back and feet stuff she's dealing with. For me, it's a bit of stomach pain this morning.

I ate breakfast in the room thinking that would make me feel better. Actually it did... but only for a short time. I snacked on jerky sticks, crackers, and cheese I'd brought from home. I could've gone downstairs to the hotel restaurant for a free breakfast; that's a benefit of my Lifetime Titanium elite status with Marriott. We've had free-breakfast vouchers each day of this trip but only used them the first day. As nice as it is to get a restaurant meal for free, as I get older I find that sometimes all I really want is something small and simple and right here, right now.

As we packed up and checked out of our room around 10am we punted on doing much hiking today. We discussed a few options in the area. We felt kind of "meh" about all of them. We just don't have the energy for it today.

Right now we're 30 minutes north of Mammoth Lakes, at a Mobil gas station / convenience store / gift shop / diner in Lee Vining. If you've ever driven to/from the Yosemite high country via US-395 you likely know exactly the place I'm talking about. We stopped here because my stomach was tying itself in a knot again and I thought another light meal might help. I know that sounds ridiculous on the surface, but actually it works. I feel better now. Well, better stomach-wise. I still feel "meh" about hiking. As does Hawk. 😞

At this point we'll just start driving home. Starting by climbing the Tioga Pass and driving through Yosemite National Park. We agreed we might stop for some hop-out pictures, especially since the weather today is beautiful compared to that ugly overcast we had driving through Yosemite on Sunday. But no hiking.
