Buffyverse Top 5 Closes in 9 hours!

yourlibrarianWe're down to the final hours of our session, and here's one last recs list of 2019 works from me.
Thanksgiving with the Burkles, 2019 by shadowscast. This ficlet is not only a new work from her in the Buffyverse but it's a sequel! (And also perfect for this new month).
Villains by electric_heart. Fun icon of the Troika. Also I quite liked her pairing icons.
Excardiation by beer_good_foamy. "After Buffy runs away from home, Joyce finds herself bringing home a curious flowerpot from the gallery." Well you know that's not going to go well.
Roses Are Red, Angelus Is Blue by thenewbuzzwuzz. A series of scenes tied together with roses, covering up the scent of denial.
Change, Like Sunshine by still_lycoris. "When Wash first joined the crew, he thought Zoe was Mal's lady. He was quite wrong about that." And Mal was quite wrong about it disrupting a smoothly working ship.

Five Historical Fics

baudown.livejournal.comLast year, I posted five historical fics, and promised I would post five more. I didn't get around to it then, so here they are now:
1. Sacred, by Valancy -- An encounter between Angel, Spike, and Dru, set sometime after the events of the Boxer Rebellion. This is one of those stories that makes you think, "Oh, of course that would have happened." A beautifully written, emotionally authentic story with spot-on voices and characterization. I've only recently discovered this story, and unfortunately have been able to find very little of the author's other work.

clawofcat.livejournal.comI wasn't much of a Dawn fan when I watched the show and I don't think I'm alone in that, either. However, that changed when I started reading fanfiction. Dawn's one of those characters that has highly benefited from some serious character exploration by fic writers because we can take her out of the context of simply being Buffy's sister or the catalyst of conflict for Season 5, and really delve into who she is as a person. Each of these fics take one aspect of her and run with it to full affect.
1. The Down Below by Devil Piglet
Spike & Dawn, R, S7 post "Lessons"
Summary: Spike and Dawn have some unfinished business.
Review: Devil Piglet was one of the finest early Buffyverse writers we had and I miss her work dearly. While perhaps best known for her Spuffy, DP also created a number of fics that featured Dawn and I think this is one of her best. The show only gave us a glimpse of the animosity that Dawn felt for Spike after the events of "Seeing Red," but this fics takes those feelings of betrayal, hurt and vengeance to the next logical level. When did Dawn become so scary? I'd say just about the time this fic was first posted. A lovely, dark read with a beautiful conclusion.

1. A Man of Many Colors bysnickfic
Oz, G, through BtVS S2 "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered"
Summary: A character study through Oz's hair dying decisions.
Review: Talk about bang for your buck. Snickelish takes one facet of Oz's personality - his ever changing hair color - and goes the distance with it by digging deep and creating a backstory that does a lot to shed some light on a character whose past and inner workings were barely even touched on in canon. I felt very satisfied after reading this and more than once thought, "Yes. That makes so much sense." Creative, deep, and somewhat sad, this shot definately makes you wonder what other hidden worlds there are to explore within Buffy and Angel's large ensemble cast.

Snickelish takes one facet of Oz's personality - his ever changing hair color - and goes the distance with it by digging deep and creating a backstory that does a lot to shed some light on a character whose past and inner workings were barely even touched on in canon. I felt very satisfied after reading this and more than once thought, "Yes. That makes so much sense." Creative, deep, and somewhat sad, this shot definately makes you wonder what other hidden worlds there are to explore within Buffy and Angel's large ensemble cast.

Review: Talk about bang for your buck. clawofcat.livejournal.comIt's no secret that the BtVS fandom is blessed with a huge array of talented artists. Manippers and banner/icon makers are the people who make us look good. But seeing artwork that goes beyond manipping and screencaps is usually pretty rare. Luckily, 2008 heralded the entrance of a few individuals and/or their work into our playpen that stretched the boundaries.

In my two years, I believe Tibi is the first artist I noticed that actually drew and sketched with pencil and paper. And not only does she draw, but she does so with immense skill. Her flexibility and scope is huge. Always experimenting with her style, she changes it up drastically from picture to picture (abstract, photo realistic, comic style, sketches, b&w, color), which makes viewing her work fresh and exciting. She is also fearless and often uses unexpected angles and POVs for her more dynamic scenes, employing them to dramatic and sensual effect depending on the mood of her piece. Her art catalog is diverse, ecclectic, and varied.

1- There’s Always a Sneer in Vegas bystillrose:
This is the most terrifying, disturbing, gripping, amazing Pet!Xander fic I have ever read in a long time since Broken Revenge. There's so much violence here that I've never read in a fic before. If you can't handle extreme violence and tentacles, then this fic ain't for you. Oh, and while losing one's voice was cool in Hush, it's much, much heartbreaking here.
