Brave New World by kaydefalls refers to wish!verse where Anya asks "How do you know the other world is any better than this?" and Giles responds "It has to be." This vid asks the question: Is it really better? And the answer's somewhat ambiguous.
You may need to be as old as I am to get The Odd Couple (Giles/Spike). It takes the opening audio track from The Odd Couple tv series and puts it with images of Spike and Giles. Gives a great suggestion of them as opposite guy roommates.
I Belong to You makes a convincing case for a love triangle between Buffy, Angel, and Mr. Gordo (who is played by piglet).
You'd think that playing the robots in Buffy against the song Robot Girlfriend would make for a light-hearted video, but Robot Girlfriend is actually quite poignant at the end.
Transparent: Oh my Goddess. This Willow character study is just amazing.

1) Reassembling by texasfan. "What if both Buffy and Anya died at the end of The Gift?" Eventual Spike/Xander. I liked both the gradual way this developed and also watching how this one big change was able to lead to various other ones through S6. ( Read more... )

I try to do a crossover rec list ever year because I love a well done crossover and I don't think I've recced these here before (apologies if I have!) And apologies also because I feel like I'm spamming, but I'm not around much next week, so trying to get some posts up while I can.

Serenity Nevada by ChristinaK This is a BTVS/Firefly crossover and is an human AU as far as Mal and co are concerned. This is an Oz fic, specifically Oz whose summer road trip takes him to a sleepy little town in Nevada- one that just woke up with a big new problem. Mal as the sheriff, Zoe as his deputy and Simon as the local coroner who has a slightly crazy sister are just brilliant. And the explanation for why River is the way she is, is a wonderful segue into Buffy canon. Go read, this is brilliant.

I love rare pairings fics. I’m so ingrained in the characters and the ships that I write that it’s a real joy to be challenged when I come across stories that make me take a step back and think wow, the author really makes that pairing work. (Where possible the entries are on A03, but unfortunately not all are available there.)

glossing is beautifully achy and bittersweet Devon/Xander. Oz has left and Xander is bereft. Devon provides solace even though Xander isn’t gay. This is gorgeous.

I tried to avoid rec'ing works that I rec every year but Restfield's Saturday Night vid, music by Bay City Rollers and set during Band Candy, is such a delight that I just can't not share. I adore how it's such a fun vid but then turns poignant in the end. Also, the Mayor turning and leaving on "Gotta Go" just amuses me every time.

I couldn't be happier seeing this fashionable, retro glamor shot of Mr. Trick, a minor yet memorable BtVS demon. (Who alone, as a bonus, commented on the unnatural lack of POC in this supposedly SoCal town. Joss, was that your conscience speaking?) Anyway, this artwork is just gorgeous! (Also, whatever skincare regimen Mr. Trick's using to get that glowing-from-within look, I want it.) ;)

I'm a big fan of fics where a well-timed spell, a friend stepping in to help, or someone asking the right question at the right time can solve a problem from canon.

Here are five short classic fics in that category:

1. Apotheosis by Ephemeral Night (Willow/Tara, General Audiences). Willow stumbles upon the secret for carrying out the Thy Will Be Done Spell in a more effective manner, and comes up with some clever and audacious to eliminate nearly every threat the Scooby Gang will ever face, and then takes it even further into the ultimate fix-it fic territory. Tagged as "fluff and crack" in AO3, and it's high quality fluff and crack.

Hello, gentle readers of this lovely fandom. First-time poster here, because...I have recs! Now the challenge is to group them by five and somehow come up with creative categories for them. :)

1. Answering Prayers (Joyce/Angel, R) by

velvetwhip. Buffyverse is deep and wide, but have you ever expected to find stories shipping Joyce/Angel? I confess I hadn't. The character of Joyce, who is not as fleshed out in canon as I'd have liked, absolutely comes alive with Velvetwhip's well-paced and restrained story-telling. It's an interesting POV that will have you question your previous opinions of Buffy, who is, in comparison, just a child. This nuanced, angsty story is full of both sense and sensibility, simultaneously clever and plausible, such that it's made a convert out of me! Rejoice for Joyce!

All In A Day's Work by

beer_good_foamy (Buffy-centric, crossover with the song "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots", PG-13).
To be fair, Buffy wasn't entirely sure how she was supposed to stop a giant robot about to attack Tokyo. But still, being told that someone else would handle it felt a bit weird.
Yes, it's crossover with a song. Yes, it works. Go read it!

As I was waiting for Buffyverse Top 5 to begin this month, these came to mind as in I didn't go looking at my bookmarks.

1. Indri's In the Morning of the Magicians. This is totally my head-canon for how Ripper and Ethan met. It has so many things going for it. Bourgeois Ripper who is put off by his friends' lifestyle. The story Ripper is telling himself keeps changing as he realizes he's not going to make it big as a musician. How Eyghon would not have been invoked without both Ripper and Ethan in the mix, but Ripper denies all blame, putting it all on Ethan. This is what breaks Ethan, taking the blame onto himself and thinking that he doesn't know how to have friends and that's what turns him into the Ethan from BtVS. It's a marvelous tale.

local_max's Making a Good Entrance and

brutti_ma_buoni's Connected both take on "Chosen", from very different perspectives, and both end up giving me a huge smile while still making some interesting commentary on the show. We critique because we love.

I'd be the world's biggest liar if I claimed I could actually whittle down

foxstarreh's stories last year to "five best" because
there are too many and all of them excellent; this is just a small sampling

"Those Things" - (Buffy/Angel/Spike; Dawn, post-NFA) This is the fic that turned me into a B/A/S shipper. Just lovely.

"On the Edge" - (Buffy, early-mid S6, canon compliant) "Buffy's afraid of drowning. She figures she should be afraid of heights now, too." Character study for a prompt by

leni_ba.

"White Wedding" - (Willow/Tara, AU) One of the most chilling character studies of Willow I've ever read; controlling things (and people) has become all too easy.

"Ash" (Buffy, Angel, Spike; Buffy/Spike, post-Chosen) Spike left her nothing to hold onto after the Hellmouth; Angel offers a way to help. The numbness of grief before the damn of emotion breaks.

"Save the World" (Gen, Tara, Kennedy, AU episodic of Chosen) Exactly what I always imagined Tara's role would have been in Chosen, had she lived. AWESOME. (Why aren't there more AU S7 fics with Tara in them? Get on it, fandom, pretty please.)

Bonus - yes, I'm cheating; but "Survivor's Reunion" (Gen, Buffy, Xander, Spike, Harmony, ensemble; post-Chosen) was one of my favorite comedic fics of the year. The gang meets up for their tenth year class reunion; Harmony is organizing the event. There will be monsters - and awkward conversations with ex-boyfriends.
