So in my first apartment, I could tilt up each of the electric burners to remove the metal bits underneath—two per burner, a ring and a concave thing—in order to clean the metal bits. In this apartment, it seems the metal bits under the burners are one-piece, not removable.

...This is going to make deep-cleaning the stovetop interesting...

ETA: don't mind me apparently the burners themselves are supposed to come off

Here we are approaching the middle of the week and it's time to think of something to tackle that's been a pain lurking around and waiting to be done. Something that's maybe been getting lost in the welter of important 'do me now' things. Or maybe it's something that's been niggling at your conscience and making you feel bad because it hasn't been done and has just been sitting there making you feel worse about it.

Can you bite-size it? Make it smaller and easier to achieve? If it really is just too big, can you split it into chunks and tackle at least part of it?

For those in need of a mid week challenge.... Can you find five things that are in the wrong place and move them either to where they need to go or to interim storage if their ultimate destination is currently unavailable or unsuitable? Five things too easy for you - make it ten or fifteen. Or repeat it at a second point through the day to get more done.

On another note, I was reading a blog post this morning about kitchens and kitchen organisation, that I thought might be interesting to others here (with the added benefit of a stonesoup recipe at the bottom of the post). The blog is Stonesoup by Jules - the principle being to create recipes that use fewer ingredients but still taste good - today's recipe if for an avocado and bacon salad. Anywhere the link is here and it's to a feed on Dreamwidth rather than elsewhere.

Good luck team, share with us how you're getting along. I'm off to work now so won't be able to respond until I get back this evening, but now that my good thoughts are with you all.

Cleaning!

I basically have not done any housework other than laundry and dishes since my cataract surgery a month ago! Eek! Yesterday was a scorcher, so anti-procrastination Tuesday was just another day to procrastinate, lol. Today's lovely and cool, so I'm resolved to get something going here.

I propose to spend 5 minutes tidying up the bedroom, 10 minutes cleaning the bathroom, and 20 minutes (or as long as it takes) in the kitchen.

If anyone out there cares to join in, or simply cheer me on, that would be awesome! :-)

20/40

Today I'm aiming to do at least 3 more lots of 20/40. I've already done 2

Done list:
Grocery shopping (bought and put away)
2 loads of laundry
1 sink full of dishes

Still to do:
The rest of the dishes (1-2 sinks full)
Clean down benches and stove top
Vacuum downstairs area (open plan living room and kitchen)
[Well, I did the heavy traffic areas and the open areas. I didn't do under the furniture.]

If I have the energy:
1 more load of laundry (sheets etc.)
Fold/iron put away laundry
Block knitting

Please join in if you have time and spoons, or cheer in comments.

If you don't feel up actual cleaning today, why not make a list of 3 things you want to get done over the next week.

What tricks do y'all have? My family likes to eat a lot of burgers/red meat that tend to leave the pans heavily greased. Despite repeated reminders, I can't convince them to rinse their dishes before leaving them, so I end up with dishes to wash that are covered in a layer of sticky grease. My go-to dish soap is Ajax, because I like the shape of the bottle top and it's easiest on my grip, but if there's something better, I'm completely willing to transfer it into an Ajax bottle!

If I could get away with using industrial degreaser, I would, but sadly, not an option. What dish soaps or other tricks do you find work best for getting grease off the pots and pans?

It's the final day of our weekend challenge! How's your kitchen shaping up? (Or do you need to work on another room today?)

I have to wash dishes AGAIN. And scrub the last few bits of floor. And I haven't touched the stove top or oven yet, or the refrigerator, or...

But I'm very pleased so far. :-)

I know a lot of you here in the States may have Super Bowl plans later on. I personally think cleaning a kitchen is actually more fun, but that's just me. ;-D

So cheer for your team, but don't forget to cheer for each other in the comment section, too!

GO GO GO!

I'm tired of there always being something in my kitchen that I know I really should clean. I get all the dishes washed, but the stove top's a mess; I get all the recycling into the bin, but I cringe a little when I open the microwave; and let's not even talk about the floor. *blushes*

So my goal for this weekend is to concentrate my cleaning efforts on my kitchen and to do what I can each day, so that by the end of Sunday I'm satisfied that I did my best.

I challenge you to share that goal! Of course we all have different spoon levels, family and work commitments, and so on (e.g. Super Bowl!), so each of you gets to decide what will make you satisified that you've made the improvement you wanted.

Whether you clean one thing, five things, or fifty things, don't overdo! Take breaks, get other people to help, play some music, use a timer, and let us know how you're doing!

Alternate challenges: Concentrate on the bathroom - any room - instead of the kitchen, or choose something less strenuous like cleaning up your email account. :-)

Go, team, go! \o/

Here's a good challenge. Take 5-10-20 minutes a day between now and January 1st, to clean and organize your fridge/freezer/pantry. Most boxed and canned products are perfectly safe to eat past the date that's stamped on them, but they're not getting any fresher. Let's try to use some things up that have been lurking on the back of a pantry shelf for...well, you can't remember how long! Google for guidelines if you have any doubts about whether you should be eating or tossing what you find, but most things are safe and will taste perfectly fine.

Produce that's gone limp can sometimes be revived with an ice bath, or will be perfectly fine cooked in a dish. Even limp lettuce can be made into soup. I've taken radishes that looked disgusting, washed them, trimmed off any icky parts, and what was left lasted for weeks more. Test eggs by seeing if they sink or float when you lower them into a large bowl of water. The freshest ones sink completely, others may stand on end. If they float entirely, they probably should be tossed, to be safe.

Look at your leftovers. You know what to do if they're turning blue! But they're all deteriorating and losing flavor the longer they sit, so plan a leftover night. You'll clear up shelf space and avoid having to throw food away later.

Got a freezer full of meat? Find the oldest expiration dates and plan some meals around them. There might be some loss of flavor after a very long time in the freezer, but spices and herbs can compensate for that.

Half-empty bottle of salad dressing that says 'Best If Used By' 14 months ago? Yeah, it's safe to use, but it's just taking up space if no one is using it. Feel free to toss it.

To make this even more about cleaning, of course you can wipe down shelves/wash out bins as you go along! You bet! :-D

When 2014 rolls around, you'll have fewer items with 2012 expiration dates still lurking around, more room to bring in fresh food, and a better idea of what you have on hand that you want to be using up.

Ready, set, GO! And let us know what you're finding!

It's time for some 20/20s, to try to restore some order to my kitchen!

The other thing I want to tackle is hauling Christmas stuff out of the closet and downstairs. And I'll want to dust before I do any decorating...

Oh, and I've just remembered that I never did wipe down my clothes dryer like I said I wanted to. I can do that when I trek down to the basement to bring up the snow shovels. *sigh*

Anyone else have some projects to tackle? Come keep me company! I can offer you virtual cookies! :-)

Yesterday I had a kitchen mishap where a bottle of homemade grape soda exploded and left stickiness everywhere. There was no surface in my kitchen untouched by the stuff. My kitchen has been out of hand for a while and I'd been mustering the motivation to get it totally clean in hopes of being able to keep up with it again.

The Universe certainly answered my wish in an unexpected way! I cannot stand sticky anything. It triggers something in my brain where I just want TO KILL IT WITH FIRE it gone no matter what it takes. Took me two hours of scrubbing everything in my kitchen down by hand with hot soapy water to get rid of the sticky and overwhelming grape smell. But y'all...

My kitchen looks FABULOUS.

(well, aside from the grape soda stains on the ceiling and part of the wall, but we won't worry about that right now)

I really want to keep it looking great. I usually manage to keep up with dishes, keep the floor swept, and take out the garbage/recycling regularly. Large messes are dealt with when they happen, it is the little stuff that adds up that gets me eventually.

What do y'all do on a daily basis in your kitchen? Weekly? Monthly?

I want to figure out a system where my brain will not balk at keeping my kitchen clean. It is my nemesis as far as housecleaning is concerned.

And I'm also taking a hiatus from soda making.

My kitchen only looks like a bomb went off. I'm pretty sure, anyway. I think I would remember the BOOM.

But there definitely could be a bomb hidden under all that mess! :-/ So, in the interests of safety, I need to do something about it. And since it's a hot day and I'm running on about four hours sleep, it's going to happen in short, productive bursts.

I have clean dishes to put away and dirty dishes (including some big pans) to wash, plus stuff like putting the salt&pepper and potholders all back where they belong.

How's your kitchen looking today? Remember, only you can prevent Kitchen!Explosion!!!

ALTERNATE challenge: sit yourself down and spend 10-15 minutes going through a drawer, tossing the junk, removing what doesn't belong, and organizing what's left. It's okay if you don't finish the entire drawer!

Hey, shall we kick off the week with a kitchen challenge? Because this mod totally needs one...

I need to wash dishes. I need to clean off a disgusting refrigerator shelf. I need to scrub my sink.

And, of course, I need to keep it bitesized! It's Sunday evening by me, so I'm going to tackle dishes tonight, and wait to scrub the sink after I put away the clean, dry dishes tomorrow morning. Also, I can clean that shelf tomorrow before I go grocery shopping.

What does your kitchen need from you? You can declutter a cabinet or a drawer, you can wipe the top of the refrigerator off, you can wash a window, you can empty the dishwasher (or fill it), soak a pan, take out the recycling, toss moldy food...

What's your challenge look like? :-)
sid: (Sid turquoise)
[personal profile] sid
Sorry it's been so quiet around here! Reminder: Anyone can post a challenge at any time. :-)

Well, folks, my kitchen is a MESS, so I'm declaring a kitchen challenge for ALL!

Some of the things I need to do:

rinse and bin recyclables
put new liner into wastebasket
put clean dishes away
wash dirty dishes
wipe sticky refrigerator shelves
clean microwave
mop floor
~~~~
But I'm not going to do all those things, since I have tendonitis in my right elbow. I'm just looking at the first four items. But I thought I might give the rest of you some ideas! :-D
If your kitchen is currently in great shape, feel free to choose another room of your home that needs some attention. Or maybe your garden/yard needs some love!
Let us all know, in the comments, how you're doing!
Who left this mess in my kitchen?
Oh, yeah - that was me. It just seemed like too much effort last night. I even stopped to ask myself, "Wouldn't it be better to deal with it now than in the morning?" And...then I turned out the light and went up to bed.
So now I've been up for an hour and fifteen minutes, and I haven't been into the kitchen yet. But I have to face it sometime!
So I thought I'd see if I could drag some you along with me for the ride. :-)
My challenge to you is to find one, two, or three things that need doing in your kitchen, and see if you can't get them done! Anything at all. Wipe up a spill, rinse some recyclables, organize your spices, put a skillet to soak. One small thing, two big things -- whatever you have the time and spoons to do.
Of course, if your kitchen is already organized and spotless, you can pick a different room for this challenge. *g*
Let me know how it goes...
So, I posted a kitchen challenge on Monday, inviting everyone to see if we can't get to some of those pesky, niggling, easily ignored kitchen cleaning tasks.
My own appointed tasks were to clean the microwave and take care of a spill in the fridge. I hurt my back when I nearly fell while raking leaves yesterday, so the microwave is going to have to wait, since that would involve standing and reaching forward. But I sat in a chair today and emptied the contents of the fridge door and wiped down the shelves. Then I had to stand at the sink to rinse off all the sticky bottles and jars, which wasn't so much fun, but I got it done!
Anyone else shining their toaster or cleaning their refrigerator door handle, etc? :-)
sid: (Sid turquoise)
[personal profile] sid
I'd like to challenge everyone to join me in taking care of some of those small matters in the kitchen that tend to get overlooked/postponed/ignored.
Does your soap dispenser/soap dish need a good wash? When the light shines at a certain angle, do you realize how smudged the outside of the microwave looks? Can you not even remember the last time you emptied the crumbs from the toaster and gave it a shine? Is it high time you took a toothbrush to your can opener and scrubbed off accumulated gunk?
In my case I owe the interior of my microwave a good cleaning, since I only gave it a lick and a promise when melted butter exploded inside it...a long time ago. *blushes* I also spilled something sticky over the contents of my refrigerator door shelves recently, and I'm getting pretty tired of being surprised every time I have to tug to pry a jar or bottle free, so I guess I should take care of that. *g*
So, as your spoons allow, I invite you to set your timers for 5/10/15 minutes and see what you can get done!
Let us know what you found in your kitchen that needed doing. :-)
I apologize for missing the day 3 check-in. It was very much "Oh, Cabana Boy" around my house except:
a) It was less "bring me another daiquiri" and more "I think I have Gorilla Glue in my toolbox."
b) He's engaged to one of my best friends.
c) There was less flirting and more discussing of the progression of UTI symptoms.
Really, it's best you not ask. Know that, however, things are fixed that needed to be fixed and trash was taken out and I got fed yummy food. So, all-in-all, a super-successful day.
I hope that your week is having successful moments as well and I'd love to hear about them. Hearing about you succeeding is the best part of this community for me. Please share.
