On the one hand I understand the impulse behind posts like this. On the other hand I actually think it's very worth talking about the ways that Rowling's bigotry shows up in her work, and the fact that it has not been an obstacle to her success any more than her tangible political actions have.
por ejemplo: for as much as we talk about things like the bizarrely pro-slavery SPEW plotline, or the portrayal of the goblins in the movies in particular, I have seen very few people engage with the fact that "a monstrous, violent brute is in the girl's bathroom, where it Does Not Belong" is a plot point in the very first installment of the series. that's pretty relevant when discussing the author's transphobia and transmisogyny!
YEAH like. it’s wild how much she tells on herself even in the first couple books, long before she went mask off. it’s worth looking at how incredibly flawed the most basic worldview presented in these books actually is, esp if you grew up with them and overlooked these things.
look at chamber of secrets. wouldn’t it make for a stronger narrative if the main trio gained access to the titular chamber by befriending a slytherin or two? wouldn’t you expect a YA novel to use a plot line like that to create a “i guess we’re not so different after all :)” sort of lesson? why doesn’t the writing pose any questions whatsoever about the fact that there is a Bad People House? why doesn’t the writer have any interest in exploring what the existence of such a house means for the people sorted into it? why is the writer so invested in validating and upholding the inherent distrust of The Other, to the point she expects us to root for the protagonists as they violate the privacy and bodily autonomy of the “bad guys” to gain access to their evil bathroom? (side note: wow the first two books both prominently feature bathrooms……weird)
i think everyone who might come across this post should know exactly why, but there are a lot of folks who read HP as kids and just… turned their brains off. media literacy is important, even for bad media! maybe especially for bad media!!!
