From: Department of Institutional Student Health Services

Information, Prevention, Current Statistics

Current Information

  1. Swine Flu cannot be contracted from eating pork products.

  2. The CDC does not know how this virus is being transmitted although it is most likely via the respiratory route from person to person.

  3. In Mexico, this strain of Swine Flu has caused 90 deaths and 1,600 cases of infected people.

  4. As of this date, of reported and confirmed cases in the U.S., cases have been self resolving and no deaths have occurred.

  5. All ages have been infected. (7y.o to 54y.o.)

  6. Currently, there is no vaccine available for this strain of Swine Flu, but one is being developed should it be found to be needed.

  7. Anti-viral medication such as Tami-Flu, are not completely effective against this new strain, but will help to minimize symptoms.

  8. The US dept. of Homeland Security has declared a public health emergency for the United States. This is precautionary, so that it will free up resources and money to get the nation prepared should it become necessary.

Definition and Current Statistics
  • Human cases of swine influenza A (H1N1) virus infection have been identified in the United States. Human cases of swine influenza A (H1N1) virus infection also have been identified internationally. The current U.S. case count is provided below.

  • Investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the infection and whether additional people have been infected with swine influenza viruses.

  • CDC is working very closely with officials in states where human cases of swine influenza A (H1N1) have been identified, as well as with health officials in Mexico, Canada and the World Health Organization. This includes deploying staff domestically and internationally to provide guidance and technical support. CDC has activated its Emergency Operations Center to coordinate this investigation.

  • Laboratory testing has found the swine influenza A (H1N1) virus susceptible to the prescription antiviral drugs oseltamivir and zanamivir and has issued interim guidance for the use of these drugs to treat and prevent infection with swine influenza viruses. CDC also has prepared interim guidance on how to care for people who are sick and interim guidance on the use of face masks in a community setting where spread of this swine flu virus has been detected. This is a rapidly evolving situation and CDC will provide new information as it becomes available.

Current Number of Reported Cases

As of April 26, 2009 (CDC last report) the following States were involved with confirmed cases of Swine Flu: California 7 (concentrated in the San Diego area), Kansas 2, New York City 8, Ohio 1, Texas 2.

75 additional students showed up at the NYC school where Swine Flu was first detected this morning complaining of sore throat, cough, fever and flu like symptoms.

As of this morning, there are now 40 reported cases in the U.S.

Canada, Europe, and Spain are now reporting confirmed cases.

Reports from these states advise that ALL of the reported cases have been mild and only one person was hospitalized. All are recovering without complication.

What You Need To Do

As of today, the CDC recommends the following:
  1. If you are sick, with cough, sore throat, fever, headache, you are strongly urged to stay at home for at least 24hrs after you are feeling better. If you would not normally seek medical attention, for the way you feel, there is no need to seek medical attention to find out if it is swine flu.

  2. If your condition worsens or if you have had flu symptoms for several days and fever does not go away and your cough gets deeper or diarrhea and vomiting begin, seek medical attention.
The only way to diagnose swine flu is with a swab of nasopharangeal secretions which is then tested and sent to the CDC for confirmation.

  3. Incubation period is 24-48 hrs after exposure

  4. If any student, faculty or staff member has recently traveled to Mexico, and have these symptoms, it is recommended that you go to the doctor for a swab.

  5. For further information, you can go to the CDC website at: www.cdc.gov.

REMEMBER…COVER YOUR MOUTH WHEN COUGHING AND WASH YOUR HANDS FREQUENTLY TO HELP AVOID GETTING INFECTED OR TRANSMISSION TO OTHERS.

IF YOU ARE SICK, STAY HOME!!

MP&E Secret

The later you get into MP&E, the more selective you can be in choosing your teachers (because your class registration date is earlier). Think of it as a consolation prize for not getting accepted the first time around.

state of boston music!?

Hey guys!
I'm an aspiring journalist and have decided to take on the state of Boston music for school. I was wondering if any of you guys on here could point in the right direction of who I could speak to? You know, like what local bands are really big? I'm not from Boston so any tips would be cool. Anyway thanks you guys.

Melissa

Anyone from Berklee Electronica Club?

Hi Berklee Community,

I am a recent college grad in Boston who's recently gotten into making electronic music. I have been looking for a community/meetup for people who demo audio software/tips & tricks, and it seems like the only electronica club that I could find in Boston is the Berklee Electronica Club.

So I beseech you: would it be possible for me to get into the electronica club meetings even if I don't unfortunately attend Berklee? (I don't bite, I promise). Any info is appreciated, and/or if you can direct me to the right resources, thank you and have a nice day!

mangini

Helo, so I don't know if anyone really uses this anymore-but I'm going into Mangini's Drum Lab 1 in the fall. Any idea of how much I should have under my belt? I've been playing almost 6 years but I havent had a formal lesson in a looooong time. I'm a proarts student and did all my music courses at berklee for my degree, I've done the afro cuban class and drum studies but I've never done a drum lab. I almost opted for the drum lab for non percussionists because I havent had a lesson in so long but I was told not to and to go into drum lab 1.
Thoughts? Suggestions?
Thanks-anything would be really helpful!
