This week I have finally got sorted out a computer task I was not managing to do for literal years. There's a few fiddly details to fix but basically I have the new computers set up and running, which was getting a bit urgent with the odd behaviour of the older computer.
Unfortunately that means I'm now on windows 11 instead of 10. All the emojis look Bad, including the one I sign my name with sometimes, which is annoying. The keyboards are slightly different including the on screen keyboard. I can't figure out how to stop it suggesting things. It keeps popping up a menu when I'm trying to type and I haven't figured out why yet. It is more than usually pants.
And it keeps trying to search things that are not my computer, thus making it less useful than any previous computer.

But it works, so, yaay ish?

... I can't fit all my files in this littler computer even though they all fit on the older version that said it was the same size. The audio shall have to go on another device. I guess Windows is just eating all the space.

So, typos will be more, typing is more annoying, I keep finding new settings to turn off, and I have nothing interesting to say Anyway.


I have been relistening to 8 and Charley and C'rizz audios. I have little memory of these, it has been a long time since I first listened, and I suspect I mostly listened on the bus on the way to or from college which is a less detailed focused listening experience. They are quite good and Charley is less annoying than I remember. The arc stories keep ending just when I am about done with them. I'd probably like them even better if I didn't listen while I had a headache but headache days are boring.

The last Torchwood monthly adventure is due out soon. I am appropriately apprehensive after the publicity they've been doing. As is everyone on the tag on tumblr. I think I shall have to listen close to when it comes out or read all about it anyway. I hope they do the good horror and not the annoying wreckage. Tricky balance.

... this keyboard is most annoying. It keeps telling me what to type and I cannot figure out why it keeps going back down or giving me the menu from the little window button in the corner underneath it. blah.

okay, I shall go do something else. probably involving more Doctor Who.

I did not play Wrath of the Righteous today
partly because that's how entire days disappear
but mostly because I am sulking about the difficulty level.

It does warn you that you need to know the system
and I could drop the difficulty at any time
but I am finding it just on the edge of too frustrating
so sometimes it looks like a nice challenge
and then I realise how many times I had to restart fights to avoid tpk.

I still like the game but I am thinking about giving up on Core and dropping a difficulty level to one that is
more achievable.

But then I have been achieving, very slowly, with multiple reloads.

Still. Not feeling enthused today.

A windows update just took two solid hours, much of it spent looking like it wasnt doing anything.
I thought it was a quick ten minute task before my evening exercise. Instead I kept my exercise streak going by waving my arms while staring at the screen willing the percents to move and thinking of how many hours its going to be before the computer place opens, which turns out not to be relevant, but, you know.
That was not relaxing.

Today: mostly listening to a lot of music.
Shouty music.

I should figure out how to get my CDs into my phone but all the instructions I've seen so far say to either use an apple computer or install itunes on your windows computer and big nope to that.

I used to think I knew how to use computers but every time I learn a task the how to do it changes before the next time I need the task. I used to put my music in each new playing device no problems. Plug it in, drop it in a folder, simples. But all things are now dedicated to being proprietary and complicated.

Also I know there are a number of ways to acquire music that do not involve CDs but that combines the 'they changed all the all' problem with the 'and now I have to buy it again' problem.

That said it would probably be long term simpler to learn how online music works.

When it is not youtube. Youtube only works in firefox with the adblockers. otherwise it's ads every two minutes and you can't listen to an album that way.

I realise the internet wants to make money, but it lately wants to make more money by not in fact letting me do the thing I am there to do, which is pants.

Shouty music is not much of an answer, but, today, is what I've got.

I just tried to open an epub and discovered microsoft has decided to just not do that any more.

Any recommendations for epub ebook readers?
I have a device I never managed to set up properly as well. Figuring out how to put files on that without the manufacturer watching was a goal.

Is Calibre the way to go?
something else?

... why does microsoft just do stuff like this...

Okay, I just kind of gave up on my Inbox. This happens at irregular intervals. I look at all the email, figure it's been months and I have dealt, and then just shovel it into one of the storage folders.

So: If there was anything up until about last week that any of y'all wanted me to reply to, and I haven't? ... oops. ...sorry.

It's like that thing where now they're linking more thru metafandom I'm actually reading less meta. I get all the interesting windows open and then there's a whole lot of windows and I wander off and the computer crashes and I have read no meta.


Or the thing I was told I did when very small, where putting more than one toy on my tray left me Very Confused, until I pushed almost all of them off.

Smaller amounts of data leads to greater interactions. Not so logical.

My CueCat scanner arrived from LibraryThing and I just put two books in just by wooshing it along the barcode :-)
Way to save gigantic amounts of typing!

... on books young enough to *have* a barcode. Come to think, the vast majority of my typing has been on the other sort, the really ancient ones which often lack ISBN let alone handy swipe thing.

But hey, basically? Time saver!

Ambigrams are nifty cool ways of writing words so they read the same whichever way up they are.

I also found one for Ethan

sponsored google link leads to Wow Tattoos, who specialise in ambigrams. I can see how they'd be useful for tattoos, seeing as you're writing on a moving surface. I liked their 'karma' circle. I haven't poked around much yet. They have an Ethan too, but I don't think it looks very good. Obviously some words are harder than others. Many of them don't look to good to me.
There's two good versions of 'Faith' though.

I'm more impressed with the ones I can read before I read what they're supposed to say.

I just like the idea of a word that stays the same even when you turn it around. Pretty.

Of course the angel/devil ambigram is cool too. Words that turn into opposites, nifty. They have choice/destiny too. Also hope/faith and love/lust, which aren't so much opposite as related.

something made my computer lock up. sulk. I stop looking at these now because all the pages went away when I restarted.

New cool thing - my broadband connection now says connected at 2.2Mbps.
Which is like 4 times faster than before.
