Racial Profiling or Deterrent to Crime?

Thursday, October 11, 2012
12:00PM - 2:30PM

Pace University
Multipurpose Room
1 Pace Plaza
New York, NY 10038

Under the current New York City administration, men and women regardless of age are being stopped, questioned, and searched at alarming rates. In 2011 for example, 85% of the 700,000 stops involved Blacks and Latino/as. The rationale, according to New York City's mayor, police commissioner, select public policy analysts, and some leaders in Black and Latino/a communities, is that these practices make communities safer and lower the crime rate. Whether you agree, disagree, or are somewhere in the middle, join in on what will prove to be a provocative discussion.

2012 National Night Out

The 29th Annual National Night Out Against Crime

Tuesday, August 07, 2012
4:00PM and Later

National Night Out is a crime/drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW). It's an annual campaign involving citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. It is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships, and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Along with the traditional display of outdoor lights and front porch vigils, cities, towns, and neighborhoods 'celebrate' NNO with a variety of events and activities such as block parties and cook-outs, exhibits, flashlight walks, contests, and youth programs.

Contact your local police precinct or Community Board to learn where an NNO event will be held near you.
