The Doctor liked humans. A lot. So much, in fact, that most of his companions over the years had been from earth. Humans were adventurous, curious, inquisitive, full of wonder and excitement, the kinds of people you could take anywhere and be sure they’d appreciate not only the chance to see things no one they knew back home had ever seen, but that they would want to see more. They made the Doctor see things with new eyes, helped him rediscover his own sense of wonder and excitement whenever he started to feel a bit jaded. They were refreshing and easily impressed.
Unfortunately, some of them could also be a bit touchy and excitable, a few even had a tendency to overreact to perfectly normal situations. Well, normal from his perspective. He tried not to pick anyone with a nervous disposition to travel with him, but it wasn’t always easy to tell how they might react to anything… a bit out of the ordinary. Take this one, for example. One slight miscalculation on his part and she’d practically become hysterical. Well, alright, that might be a slight exaggeration, but judging from her screams, she hadn’t been happy. She had quite a set of lungs on her.
“Here,” said the Doctor, pressing a cup of tea into his new companion’s hands. “What you need is a nice hot cup of tea. Tea makes everything better.”
“Tea?” She looked into the cup at the swirling brown liquid, then up at the Doctor. “You said this was a safe planet!”
“Yes, well, usually it is. There’s just a bit of… civil unrest today. Can’t imagine why.”
“A bit? And there was nothing CIVIL about it! They tore half my clothes off!”
“That’s a bit of an exaggeration, don’t you think? It was only the outer layer, they left your… underthings intact. They were a little boisterous, I’ll admit, but I’m sure it was all just a misunderstanding. These things happen occasionally.”
“A misunderstanding? They were going to sacrifice me to their god!”
“I would never have let that happen, you were perfectly safe. There was no need to panic. Perhaps punching that one in the nose wasn’t the best idea. It upset him.”
“Well, it upset ME! It grabbed me by my…” She blushed. “Never mind what it grabbed me by, the fact that it grabbed me at all was more than enough reason to defend myself!”
“Curiosity; that was all it was. They’d never seen someone like you before. They’re a very tactile people.”
“Then you should’ve warned me first!”
“I thought I had. Drink your tea.”
She narrowed her eyes in suspicion and peered into the cup. “Did you put something in it?”
“Of course I did: Tea, water, dash of milk… two sugars. That’s good for shock, you know.”
“You didn’t put anything else in it?”
“Why would I? It doesn’t need anything else. It’s tea, the universal cure for whatever ails you. Can’t go wrong with a nice cup of tea.”
Still not convinced, she took a cautious sip, then another, half expecting the contents of her cup to knock her out, or perhaps erase her memory, but it didn’t. Slowly, she drank the whole cup.
The Doctor beamed at her approvingly. “There, don’t you feel better now?”
“Not really, being groped by an alien and threatened with being sacrificed is not my idea of a good time. It was good tea though.” She held her cup out. “Can I get a refill?”
“Certainly!” The Doctor picked up the teapot and refilled the cup, deciding he liked this one, even if she was a bit loud at times. Maybe he’d give her another chance. “So, where would you like to go next?”
