Dee stood, hands on hips, watching in disgust as the guy he and Ryo were looking for took off down the street the moment he spotted them.
“Does that idiot really expect us to chase him in this heat? We’re not even here to arrest him, we just wanna ask him a few questions about a former acquaintance.”
Ryo shrugged. “He doesn’t know that.”
“Yeah, but now he’s made it look like he’s guilty of somethin’, which means instead of just talkin’ for a few minutes, we gotta slap the cuffs in him and take him in.” Dee scowled after the fleeing man.
“To do that, we’ll have to catch him first,” Ryo pointed out. “And in case you haven’t noticed, he’s getting away.”
“Yeah, but how far’s he really gonna get? If he’s not careful, he’s gonna wind up with heatstroke. So will we if we chase him.”
“So we’re just supposed to let him get away? That won’t go down well with the Chief.”
“Never said that.” Dee got back into the car and started the engine. “We’ll let him wear himself out, then pick him up. Where’s he gonna go?”
“Inside one of the buildings?”
“Dino don’t do stairs, not at any speed. He dodges in somewhere, we’ll have him that much quicker, but I doubt it’ll come to that.” Their fugitive was already slowing down, panting heavily. Dee cruised alongside the guy. “Hey, Dino, why don’t ya make this easy on yourself and just get in? You know you’re not gettin’ away.”
Dino glanced their way and kept going, although by now he was beginning to stagger.
Shaking his head, Ryo stepped out of the moving car, falling into step beside the fugitive. “Give it up before you kill yourself.”
“Fine. You win.”
“We always do.”
