Summary: Making up plausible explanations is part of the job.

A/N: Double drabble.
One of the prerequisites of working for Torchwood was a good imagination and the ability to think on your feet, because part of Torchwood’s job was keeping the existence of aliens a secret from the rest of the population. That was a tough job, given that literal aliens were living in the sewers, and a Rift in space and time kept dropping all kinds of alien ephemera, along with living aliens, wherever it saw fit.
Trying to keep everyone in Cardiff, locals and tourists alike, in the dark about what was really going on in the Welsh capital, which already had a reputation for unexplained phenomena, required a certain… inventiveness. After all, there were only so many stories of gas leaks, contaminated water supplies, and people in masks that people would believe.
“It wasn’t a spaceship; it was a lenticular cloud formation. The sun was just setting behind it, which is why it looked like it was glowing,” Ianto assured a group of tourists worried about alien invasion. “It was rather spectacular though, don’t you think? Much better than the computer-generated special effects in some Sci-Fi movies. Nature is extraordinary.”
The witnesses lapped up his explanation with their retcon-laced coffee.
